The number of islands depends on how you define an island. Is a boulder sticking out of the water an island? Is a sandbar? Is a spoil? (a spoil is an artificial island that happens when you dredge a channel for boats and you make a pile of the stuff you dredge up). What about man made structures that are built in the water? I live in Florida and near the harbor and how many islands are in the harbor depends on time of day and time of year and changes every time a tropical storm comes through. Also in recent years oysters have started to be built up so much in some parts of the harbor (a good thing) that you walk on them at low tide. They are living organisms that are attached to underwater substrate so are they islands. some years ago a company began dumping used cinderblocks into the harbor but since they have the benefit of forming an artificial reef the state decided not to fine the company for doing so. is that pile of cinderblocks which stick out of the water an island?
