Ben Nevis, Ledge Route + CMD Arete - Scottish winter mountaineering

- What a Sunday it was! Despite the brilliant weather conditions on British highest mountain I had to change my plans under the North Face as the original idea was to climb number 2 gully up and Ledge route down.. Avalanche forecast was moderate but snow wasn't fully consolidated yet and there was also a danger of some loose cornices high up in the gullies.. You can only do what mountain allows you to and it's definitely not a right place to force it especially when you solo.
I decided to go up via Ledge route and descend down over Carn Mor Dearg Arete which I have never done before. To do this route + film it on the way was definitely one of the hardest but most beautiful days I ever had in Scottish mountains.
Alpine mountaineering adventure on Ben Nevis in Scottish Highlands filmed on 25th of February 2024.
The whole movie content is a video - report of my story and experience only. Its not meant to be for guiding purposes but just to entertain you + make some memories for myself!!!!!!
MUSIC USED IN VIDEO:
Metamorphosis - Quincas Moreira
The End - Quincas Moreira
High Wire - The 126ers

Fantastic Jonas, finally something decent to watch on YT that doesn’t have stupid clickbait titles and thumbnails, just proper adventure. Ledge route looks just outside my comfort zone. Nothing too technical.
Am sure you'd do ledge toute
Thank you. I can still change the text on the thumbnail to ''I almost died up there..''🤣 Not technical just some exposure in places. Just go and try it in the summer first and see how you feel Robin.
@@RamblingTogI’m more a rambler than scrambler these days but this looked fun without being terrifying. 😅
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewildI nearly died in 80mph winds and blizzard conditions. 😅 yeah definitely a summer route first. 😊
@@WalkWithWallace Shocking!!! Survived the whole day in deadly mountains without any whisky!!!🤣
Hi Jonas, stunning mate, absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for sharing your day with us. All the best mate, Dave 🥾😀⛰🏴
Same to you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Fantastic video again Jonas it looked amazing. Cheers!
Thank you
Loved that Jonas. It looked like a properly hard day in the hills too.
Thank you. It was for me anyway:-]
Outstanding thumbnail my friend, this looks amazing!
Thank you
Epic views I hope to climb Nevis before the snow has all melted this March 😎🤙
Thank you. Good Luck!
Great video. Well done !
Thank you
Outstanding video Jonas, what a fantastic effort to do such a long day and put together such a good film. 👍🍻🥃
Thank you David, I thought to finish the film on BN summit and then only maybe make two shots from the Arete for the very end with subtitles.. Now I am glad I did it properly right to the end :-} Cheers
Superb day, did Tower Ridge many years ago, but definitely with a mate roped up...great route though
Thank you. I could probably solo it in good winter conditions but passed that age I would just go and risked that🙂
Oh wow!!!! This is a superb video!
Very well done indeed 😁
I've seen you before at the Ratho climbing centre 👍
Thanks a lot. I appreciate that. Yes I go there from time to time with kids.
That was a fine film indeed, thank you for the all the effort involved in producing this wee gem.
Thanks very much
I could ask my brother if he would buddy with you for the north face route you don’t feel confident about. He is a good climber.
Thanks Dave. It's Tower ridge in winter. I am confident to climb it but not solo it. I am sure he is a good climber, I remember you mentioned him before but not just now, I am not planning to go climbing anytime soon as we are really busy with puppies at moment + it will soon be end of the winter climbing season anyway. I appreciate that though. This trip was luckily just before puppies were born🙂

Superb. Takes me back
Thanks. That's good.
Hats off to you man. That was really something, well done! You made a t look easy but I bet it wasn't lol.
Thank you. As I say in video it was probably a bit too much for me in one day in winter + filming but now I am glad I did it.🙂 Cheers
Great video 🎉
Thanks Simon
Great views up there.
Yes.. if you go in a right day:-]
What a spectacular route -- no wonder you were so knackered, with all that filming. Awesome video, Jonas.
You need a rope buddy, eh? Sign me up for that North Face ascent! 🏔
Thanks Radar. You are all signed for it but we have to do it with your sledges🙂
Fabulous Jonas! Classic round, great to join you in the snow. A friend of mine did CMD as his last Munro. We asked a passer by who had turned back from the arête to take our summit photo. He was so fazed he took a photo of his own face instead of us 😂😂😂 Congratulations on the new family additions btw 🐶 🐶 ATB! Sue
Thank you Sue, I only have a simple phone myself and until maybe two years ago I had no idea how to operate it so I was a target of all sorts of jokes from family and friends and remember same exact thing happened to me.. Now I borrow maybe twice a month the smart phone from kids just to promote the videos on instagram as it can't be done from laptop🙂
15:26 360 cameras should be banned from youtube 😀😀😀. Fantastic video.
I wouldn't ban it🙂 but footage is often not real. Thank you.
Not a big fan of them, they distort everything and make things seem steeper, narrower etc.
Absolutely incredible video Jonas ..I absolutely loved it ..Your channel is defo one of my favourites😍👍..The ledge route looks doable for me in the winter for me after watching your video…Defo one of the best channels on TH-cam apart from the video you slagged of Rangers..I’ll let you off with that one 😂..Top stuff mate 😁👏🏻
Cheers
Robert
Thank you. The Ledge route is an easy scramble in summer and in winter easy Grade II winter climb. You must know best what you can do. Good Luck if you decide for it! Just please don't underrate it after watching my video. It's definitely not a guide and not everything from the route is in it. My films are more for entertainment and to show natural beauty + for my own memory. Just check more stuff before you go [ukc website, books etc]
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild Cheers Jonas ..In winter I would probably use a guide just to make sure I had the correct route 👍..Would never risk anything like that unless I had enough experience to feel confident to do it.
The panorama from the summit is stunning.
Yes, I thing the view from CMD is pretty special.
highly enjoyable vid, what an amazing day out
Thank you. It was certainly one of those days to remember.
Brilliant Jonas. Epic stuff. 👌😎 Aaaaaah 🥃
Aaaaaaaah🤣✌🥃🍺🍗🚲🦮🐈⬛🦜🐝🐛🍀🌍🌙♥🌲

Great video man! I now want to do this route so thanks for this 😊
Thank you. Oh no.. don't torture yourself again:-] Just kidding. Good Luck!
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild 🤣🤣🤣😊
Thanks man! All the best on your next adventure 😊
That was fantastic Jonas and brilliant editing. I thought blimey you are very fit at the beginning and then you were running 😂you complained about your fitness level but still very impressive. Thanks for sharing a really great trip.
🍺🥃👍🌈
Thank you Dave. I think without filming I would be fine. I enjoy filming these big days up to half a day, maybe slightly more but then it's really tiring.. Not complaining though, just explaining🙂
A big day out and well worth it for the view. I think you deserved a big can on Budvar after that.
Thanks Gary, the worst was probably the drive home later that day. I usually prefer after this type of day stay in the area and chill out a bit in pub, by the fire etc..
Braw Jonas. Maybe I could team up with you for Tower Ridge, I've done it five times in Winter.
Thank you. Ok, we can meet sometimes and talk about that.
