  • Gritty Vietnam-era aircraft carrier operations. Early deployment of Grumman A-6s along with A-4s, F-4s, and the occasional RA-5, 1965. Scenes were made aboard the USS Independence. The film was finished in 1966. (At about 22-and-a-half minutes into the film, copyrighted music was removed, resulting in a silent passage of about 2 minutes, fyi.) USS Independence (CV-62) served until 1998. The carrier was decommissioned and scrapped after years of storage.

While we're visiting the 1960s, take a look at the Rail side of the Airailimages Channel with this vintage film of the Hillcrest Lumber Co. steam locomotive in service on Vancouver island in 1968: th-cam.com/video/9YdMGy27Nek/w-d-xo.html

at 10:00 , the narrator finished aircraft description, without mentioning the Vigilante, which lands aboard at 10:15.

Priceless insights into history. Note the careful choice of words. And what was considered high tech, then. Thank you.

I had a high school classmate on the Independence in '65 and '66. We enlisted together and went to A school (ATN) together but he flunked out and was sent there as a "plane pusher". I actually ended up on a destroyer and wouldn't take anything for that experience.

Thank goodness Congress funded the super carrier fleet AND strategic bomber force when it looked like it would be one or the other back in the early days of the Cold War.

What Super Carrier Fleet? Decade later. Cannot give congress😅 that much credit. James Forrestal had something to do with this as well. Congress support?
