That war lasted 9 years too long. Dad said "It's a rich man's war." Way too many guys and gals never come home alive. That's a shame, I did my time from 1962 t 1966 in the Navy.
these carrier pilots were and are the best pilots ever produced. utterly amazing how they landed on a carrier when water was rough and bottom of sea fell 15-30 feet sometimes just when ready to land on the carrier.

DLG-30...USS Horne first mission ran with carriers..spent time off coast of North Vietnam..75 miles from Haiphong....carrier went south to dmv..never took out air base..left us with ww2 destroyer as escort..during mig alert we would go to sea and destroyer went toward shore. When we lit up fire control and had a lock Migs would turn around and go back to base..we "were never there"😅
Horne was on CAP off Haiphong 12 miles off shore. I served on her from Jan 67 Pre Com in Hunters Point until we came ba k from 2nd WestPac deplyment in July 1970...great duty SK2 S-1 Division
Thanks for posting I was there on the South China Sea, Yankee Station I served on the USS OKlahoma City CLG 5 I believe it was shown @1:05 it sure looks like my ship, glad to have served my Country back then.
Was on the Forrestal when we had the fire, was a plane captain with VA-106, went back on the Intrepid when she celebrated her 25th anniversary. Made it to Australia. Great ship to work the flight deck, great bunch of ships company that worked the flight deck.

Fun times, especially when they came over the 1MC, telling us to remember our abandon ship drills. We were taking on water faster than then could pump it out! The Tico was a WWII ship, and almost past her expected live span. She took three direct Kamikaze attacks during one engagement.

USS Paul Revere 69' LPA... large flight deck on the fan-tail pretty nice spot to hang out. I salute all my brothers who served. (I was a snipe in the engine room)
There is about a 5 second shot of MSO 436, the USS Energy. There is a good chance I was on it when the footage was taken. The Energy only made 4 WestPacs to Vietnam that I am aware of. That was some year 65-66. What an experience for a 19 year old. Long hot days boarding Vietnam craft and checking for contraband. I stood bridge and helmsman watches. What a hoot seeing her in this footage. All the MSO's are gone now. It was a great ship and a great crew.

I served on the Pyro too, but not til later...... Late 80s/early 90s. I wish TH-cam would let us include pictures in our comments!
USS St. Paul CA-73 66-68. Busy times at sea and on station. VanMarter BT -3 Yes it was very hot there also. #3 Fire Room. Port time was a blast made up for the hard times at sea. Yep I wood do it again as a younger person. At 70 I sure couldn't do it now. Omg. We were all young in those times, ( look at us in the videos ) wow where did all that time go. Great job to all Vets. 👍
The lack of forward observers that would operate in the target area was a hindrance. I notice that many WWII videos render with better quality than those from the Vietnam era.
jack how long did it take you to loose your destroyer walking legs after leaving a destroyer. i believe you had to learn to walk with a 10 degree lisp.
Normally about 24 hours did the trick. The amount of alcohol consumed had an affect on the length of time. Oddly enough it seemed the more you drank the sooner you got your land legs back.
I was in Vietnam on board the RCL Legend of the Seas back in 2015. Coming out of Nha Trang we almost ran out of shrimp cocktail at the Windjammer buffet and I had to fight my way through a crowd of obese American tourists. It was tough but I survived and sometimes I still have flashbacks.
I'm certainly not a carrier expert and my suggestion was only because the carrier shown was in line with the mention of nuclear power. The Big E was the first nuclear powered carrier.
Steve America's Reality Checker yes I remember the Providence. I was on the Oklahoma City when we Relieved the Providence in 1967.? I was a fire control man guns and there were several fire controlmen that transferred to the Oklahoma City when we relieved the providence.
Perhaps that is not a tower at all. In some views I plainly see a "tilley" parked behind the island. This is a very large crane used to pick up disabled or wrecked aircraft.

I've always researched on that carrier ... in an old book about plastic scale models appears an aircraft carrier with that tower, and is named as the USS Lexington ... but do not think that this boat has a name as honorable ... the tower is not the common way of the other ... maybe then was remodeled?

Double sonic jets ? What is that ? Two engines ? I served 6 years and never heard that phrase. And computer accuracy is nonsense. The electro-mechanical devices to aim the guns back then were not as accurate as computers. And where are the DDG photos ? They were there.

I served 2 1/2 years aboard the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14 in Vietnam ('65-'67) as a photographer. Amazing times. I loved it on the flight deck.
I was onboard the Tico in late 66 as we went through a Typhoon . Green water over the bow ! LOL . Flew in EA1F's as an NFO
