I loved this song back in the day!! Not heard it for 40 odd years. Still sounds fresh and the video is still fantastic, and would look good if it was released today!
Like many others here, I first saw this on HBO's "Video Jukebox" circa 1982. I never forgot how striking the clip was, but was amazed upon rediscovering it a few years back at how brilliant the music is as well. ALL of his A&M releases from 1980 to 1985 are worth hunting down...unfortunately, only the self-titled debut is available on CD.
Chaz didn't only play keyboards for Ian Dury & the Blockheads (as mentoned above), he wrote almost all their music. That's why there's a similarity between their music and his solo work.
In december 1981 this was a hit in Holland. Although I was only 10 years old then, I can still remember this song very well. Excellent! 5 Stars of course!!!!!
I loved this video, I thought it was cool back in the earliest days of MTV, the graphics were very cutting edge , and all these years I wanted to see it again but could only remember Chaz Jankel's name, glad I finally found the video again!
Visually, this video was well ahead of it's time. Chaz definetely showcases his love for the complex rhythym scheme, absolutely forces you to dance to that hook. Been trying to find this file anywhere, gonna keep looking now. He's supposed to be out touring again soon, bet it still a great show. Thanks
FABULOUS!!! In 1981 I recorded part of this on my first VCR from TV in the middle of the night, and loved it. For over 25 years I've been hoping to see it again--all the way through. It's one of my all-time favorite music videos. Thanks so much for posting it.
Impressive kinetic neon animation directed by Annabelle Jankel (yeah Chaz's sister) & Rocky Morton. Featuring the "light on the mouth" effect before Laurie Anderson's 'O Superman'.
Wow, what a coincidence. I was just reading about Annabelle and Rocky earlier today, in an archived issue of Spy Magazine (June 1993 issue). The article mentioned how they were just part of the massive clusterfuck that was the disastrous Super Mario Brothers movie. It said that they were openly mocked by the cast and crew, and given the nickname The Hydra LOL. I had no idea it was Chas' sister.
Jankel & Morton also directed the classic videos for Accidents Will Happen by Elvis Costello, Genius Of Love by Tom Tom Club, New Frontier by Donald Fagen as well as others. Also. they won an Emmy for the animated intro to Friday Night Videos. Very cutting edge indeed.
I think I first saw this video on the Kenny Everett Video Show and loved it from that moment on .... play it full blast in the car with windows open and share this brilliant bit of music with passers by :) Cheers for uploading :) Quinny
YES! YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT! I saw this on HBO'S video Jukebox, too! I used to LOVE that show! Brings back so many memories from my late grade school early high school years!
This was so far ahead of its time that it sounds even better today than it did in 1981. In today's digital world, we have so many "questionnaires" that we routinely respond to, with few ever considering what their answers might reveal.
Silly me! I've been listening to the same two song by Chaz (Glad To Know You & Number One) for the past 20+ years...! This tune is no joke. I gotta get his greatest and/or a couple of his albums! Dang!
I second baroncalamity - this song's been stuck in my memory for two thirds of my life. I see Animotion's 'Obsession' is here, too. Just love youtube sometimes. :-)
Saw the *brill* video back in 1982...which *forced* me to get the FULL "Questionnaire" LP a week later...and dug the *WHOLE THING!* Thanx fer this, m8...
They would have had to have played it well into '83, cause my cable system didn't add MTV until October '82, and I definitely saw it enough to become familiar with it! I finally found the album in an old record store in Dallas in the late 90s...
dam this video is one of the first i seen when i was in the 9th grade i did not have cable however show like mv3 & late night video i rember it well the neon was cool.
And now he too is part of the Ministry of the Past... A glorious past... Good catchy song, but I miss a better bass line than the bom - bom - bom. Something extra funky, think Level 42 for ex. ("Love Games" goes a little bit in the same direction with its melody)
It’s 2021 and suddenly this song pops in my head!!! The 80’s was a great time to for music and videos!!! Loved being a teen in the 80’s.
24 almost 25

As a rhythmic blend of musical styles I think it works superbly.I heard it growing up in New Zealand. It had me dancing then.Still does now!
HBO used to play videos in between movies back in the early 80's. This was before MTV. This was one video they played a lot! Love it.

I always had the impression THAT came earlier.
Laurie Anderson. There's a blast from the past.

I love when a random 80's song title drifts up from my subconscious .. very cool
Good good, super even today.
I like the Cuban Miami Sound Machine vibe this song has. I remember seeing it on HBO back in the 80s.

Still better than anything new these days
WOW the memories ! hot musicians way ahead of their time .
Can’t believe it’s on here, this one
loved this and all his music since i first heard/saw this...shame there isn't a great quality copy on youtube...fantastic clip
This jam (along with damned near ALL of that classic LP) is my ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE from Chaz!
Thanx fer the vignette, m8!

i seriously haven't heard this song since 1981! classic!
There is a connection with Max Headroom. Both this video and the Max Headroom show were directed by Annabel Jankel (Chaz's sister) and Rocky Morton.
The two also directed Super Mario Bros. 1993
Love this video!!!
LOVE THIS SONG HEAPS!!!!!!!!
Great memories!
I love the fact that the song lyrics are literally made up of QUESTIONNAIRE questions! MH
Light to moderate rotation on MTV in 81-82. Occasional runs a few years after. Also seen on USA Night Flight. Those were the days.
I'm not trying to bust your bubble, but I remember seeing this video on HBO before MTV. Either way, they were good days.
@MemphoWrasslin1 show, Video Jukebox
Wow thanks! I haven't seen this 1982, brilliant.
Maravilla

Thank you! I've been waiting ages for this video to show up!
i remember watching this on mv3 back in 1983.
Saw the *brill* video back in 1982...which *forced* me to get the FULL "Questionnaire" LP a week later...and dug the *WHOLE THING!*
Thanx fer this, m8...
The FIRST video I ever saw. I put it down to “watching the radio”
I was searching for the song when you get question, you know the "tan tan tan tananan tan tan" but it brought me here. Nice song.
Ive got this on a 12 inch somewhere in the loft
Wow, for some reason, this reminds me of the movie The Birdcage
STILL have this LP on vinyl, but no working turntable. Thanks for posting!
Oh yeah and ... The Fixx had the light-in-mouth thing in their "How Much Is Enough" video in '91, was it? I wonder if they got the idea from Chas...
They would have had to have played it well into '83, cause my cable system didn't add MTV until October '82, and I definitely saw it enough to become familiar with it! I finally found the album in an old record store in Dallas in the late 90s...
I remember this from HBO's Video Jukebox.
That's where I first saw it, & some song called '666' which I saw again only.a few yrs ago
dam this video is one of the first i seen when i was in the 9th grade i did not have cable however show like mv3 & late night video i rember it well the neon was cool.

THere's usually a copy of the album on Ebay. That's where I got mine. Chuck

@thoughtnot69 Yeah,I remembered too, that HBO show, HBO Video Jukebox.
I'll bet thats Norman Watt-Roy on bass!!
Now I know where Facebook comes from--and our computers are the postcards to the Ministry of the Future.
And now he too is part of the Ministry of the Past... A glorious past... Good catchy song, but I miss a better bass line than the bom - bom - bom. Something extra funky, think Level 42 for ex. ("Love Games" goes a little bit in the same direction with its melody)
this is a music video? i thought i was watching an extended 'real sex' intro
lost 80's song
Prescient.
