Mine have no quality control issues and sound awesome at max volume. I keep hooking them up to more powerful / cleaner amps and they just keep taking it and sounding better when I didn't think it was possible.
I had AT12s back in the day, great speakers. I own a pair of VS100s that I rebuilt, pretty nice. I also own "new" SL15s. Pretty decent for the price, similar build quality, but the "MDF" is a better quality on the new ones. Which surprises me because the Gibson ones are made in China. Somewhere between the old chip board and actual MDF. Same cheap crossover, but a steel woofer is the only real knock comparing to the cast drivers on the better older models. XLS series has cast drivers but look like Pro DJ speakers. Thats why I got the SLs. I have found Cerwin-Vega! over the years to be really good in design but they defiantly cheapen out on boxes and crossovers. If you like Rock, Metal, Funk, Blues, Electronic then CV! is worth looking into. If you can find a set in good shape snatch them up if you don't like them they will sell fast. Gibson sold the company and us CV! fans are hoping for some new models thet can go toe to toe or beat the old ones. I won't hold my breath.
I have had my At15s since 1994..and then u purchased a pair of the dx-9 s in 1997. and have smoked threw several amplifies. Then In the late 90s I purchases two Carver a500x..from circuit city. and they was a perfect match. Lotts of power and they took the vegas 4ohm load and gobbled it up. And just spit out more power. Haha. Those paired up to the carvers would Rock like no other!!. I mean they would Rock.. Just have to make sure you have the amps plugged into a outlet that would supply enough power. I would recomend a 20 amp line. Even tho they have a 15 amp Power cord. Power Makes Power.
I have a pair since late 1990's. They sound great especially if you listen to rock music mainly. But the build quality really sucks. One year into using them, one of them started rattling terribly. I removed the woofer to see what's going on and found out that one of the triangular corner braces (I don't know if this is the correct term) that secures the front side became loose. I couldn't take it off completely, so I had to apply some glue and then used screws to secure it. I did this to the other one too before it became a problem. Apart from this, I had no other issues since then. I still use them with a Sony TA-F530ES amplifier which is a bit underpowered for the beasts, but more than enough.
Thanks for sharing, yes - I too found the quality was down a bit on the AT15 in comparison to the older gen models (i.e. D9). Great speakers for rock & will last a lifetime!
