    One thing i learnt from Mermaid Mari is that it's best to ask pools about their policy on monofins first, as that is a more commonly known thing, and they may be more willing to say "yeah it's fine" if it's less foreign. I usually ask about monofins over the phone, then ask in person about tail skins.
    Fantastic video, Faith and Courtney!

    Would love a video on underwater swimming such as training to hold your breath for so long, how to steer ( I tend to spin when I swim underwater with my tail.....and with reg diving flippers too... I might be a seal. XD) and any other useful tips you can think of.

    I've done the full body dolphin kick my whole life because I always wanted to be a mermaid. When I got my tail, I jumped right in with my friend who had been swimming in hers for 3 years. I did it straight away. I love swimming at weirs. I feel free in my mermaid tail and it also feels so natrual :D

    I found a really nice (if a little small) hotel pool and a friend to start mermaiding. I found it pretty easy even at the start and only spent around 15 mins using just a monofin because I have used flippers lots before I actually found it really easy with the tail. I love all the work you guys do your channels are my happy place.

    Ever since I was 6,I’ve been trying to swim like a mermaid. At first it was just putting one of those rings that sinks around my ankles and swimming like that. Then we went to Dollar General one day and i saw flippers. They were so uncomfortable when I swam in them. Then 2 years later we went to Dicks Sports one day and I saw flippers there and got those. I’m now 14 and I’ve been using those flippers for 3 years. Me and my bff love swimming like mermaids and she has one of those pink and purple mono fins. Since I’ve got a job at the barn I board my horse at,I’ve gotten some money and now I’m going to purchase my very first mermaid tail. Me and my bff are so excited! I’m excited lol

    My first time in a mermaid tail I was real stupid. Zero practice with the monofin, alone, full tail, & I went in the deep end first. Never ever do this, anyone! Thankfully I got to the surface before something happened & I practiced by holding the ladder. This time round when I got my Mahina I practiced with my old fin first & then stayed in the shallow end till I felt good about going to 5 ft. Do not be like me. Take your time & be safe.

  • @kristien2010
    @kristien2010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My eyes are terrible underwater & years ago I went to kick off in the shallow end of the hotel pool I swam at. I didn't see the floor was so close & ended up bashing my knuckles on the floor. I was fine, scraped up a bit, but don't kick off in shallow ends of pools if you can't see well underwater.

  • @soundocean3765
    @soundocean3765 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for this, it is a lot of good and important advice! ♥
    If you don't mind I would like to add the following for people who STILL want to go mermaiding in open water: CHOOSE BOTH FIN AND LOCATION WISELY.
    (Though even I have to say: ONLY DO THIS WITH SOME EXPERIENCE. This is NOT a thing for beginners!!!)
    -> Fins: I, e.g., am using Mermaid Kat and FinFun tails, and if I go swimming in the lake or sea, I ALWAYS consider which fin to use where since it makes a HUGE difference if you're using the big, stiff Mermaid Kat or the much smaller, flexible FinFun one. In 90% of swims I'd choose my Mermaid Kat fin for the sea (unless the waters are unusually calm), because it gives you a lot of power you might need to deal with waves and currents. For lakes I prefer the FinFun tail, I don't need to be that strong and fast in waters with almost no waves and less currents, and the flexibility of the tips can be helpful in an area with lots of vegetation and maybe roots and stuff like that, which I could easily hurt with my stiffer fin.
    -> Location: IF you choose to go swimming in the ocean, either go at a place where you know how the water movements work OR INFORM YOURSELF BEFOREHAND, e.g. at a dive shop or such if there is one. If you really want to go mermaiding in an ocean area you don't know, get your infos, and when you go in, GO WITHOUT TAIL AND FIN FIRST if possible, to see how things go and to get a feeling for the currents. And once you use your mermaid tail there, don't go too far and/or deep at first try. ALSO do NOT try your new mermaiding spot when there's lots of waves etc. as this can get you in trouble in more ways than one!!
    (I, myself, rarely ever go mermaiding in the sea when there's lots of waves because it can really make you feel uncomfortable which can also get dangerous, but if I do I make sure to not let it drift me farer than to where it is more than 2mtrs deep. FOR ME this is not that big of a deal because the sea where I go mermaiding is a place where I went swimming for 20 years so I KNOW which water movements are to expect and which are to avoid. But I would NEVER go swimming in a wavy ocean anywhere else.)
    If you rather want to go swim in a lake and you got the choice, go to one that isn't much of a passage for like 5 rivers, because the less of a passage it is, the less flow and current will be there that could get dangerous. My usual lake for mermaiding is very small and with almost no currents at all, it sometimes feels more like a pool than a lake.
    The thing I also would call an absolute DON'T, is swimming in a river. Things can easily get out of control there even without mermaid tail, so just DON'T DO THIS unless you're a very very very experienced pro swimmer who loves some extra risk...

    Regarding supervision of little mermaids above the age of 7, who might want their parents not to interfere with their games with other kids... well, you CAN supervise them from outside inmediate range, as long as you ARE supervising (instead of just chilling or talking with other parents about how cute your little mermaid is). Case in point, my daughter, age 9 at time of anecdote, caught her fluke with a large round floater at a pool party. She would have started having serious problems in less than ten seconds. Fortunately, I always was less than five seconds away. Was I underfoot (underfluke?) as she played with the other kids? Nope. Was I too far not to be able to help her? Also nope. Meaning that you don't have to choose betwen safety and fun: you can have both.

    • @StarlightPrism
      @StarlightPrism 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They can be dangerous if you aren't prepared. If aren't a competent swimmer in the first place, it's not a good idea to swim with a device that restricts your movement even a little. Plus a tail and monofin is gonna be a little harder to remove than just a monofin in an emergency. That said, if you are a competent swimmer you shouldn't have a problem with a fabric tail, but it's still good to practice with a monofin first.
