      I'm imagining it being a mixture of the poorly compressed ova along with the cdi cutscenes. Marth gets the same voice as link, villains would randomly turn into monsters in cutscenes, and most importantly the battle animations would be in the zelda cdi style

    I think the logic behind the weird spoon controller was for it to be a remote first and controller second; keep in mind that the CD-i was primarily made to be a multimedia player, with games being a secondary thing, so it was probably more important to include a remote control than a game controller to them, but since there were video games, they felt they needed to include a controller as well, and instead of just including both a remote and controller, they decided to make a hybrid between the two, hence the paddle controller. Of course, this isn't to defend the concept, it's very stupid, and this is all speculation, but that’s just what I think they were going for.

    • @AizensPlan
      @AizensPlan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. If you're playing a CD-i game while using the presentation controller and say the controls are terrible, it's because you're using a controller not even meant for playing games. That's like playing Super Mario Bros with the Power Glove and saying the game has terrible controls. While still flawed, it gets a lot better if you use one of the actual CD-i gamepads.

    My pops and I would play Ms. Pac-Man on NES a lot back in the day. He'd grown up playing the arcade machines and had the same complaint about using the NES controller's D-pad for Ms. Pac-Man, too. I was kinda young, so I just adapted. He lacked the lingo to define it, but he'd get mad and shout, "SHE AIN'T GOIN' THE WAY I'M PUSHIN'!" Still cracks me up.

    The real kicker, I think, is that the CD-i was not meant to be a console in the first place. I guess that should be obvious when two of the controller options are "spoon" and infrared remote, and that many of the titles are more like DOS programs.

    What a bizarre port. I have to imagine the CD-I had enough power to run some very old school arcade games, but maybe Phillips just wasn't given access to the roms. Still, it's pretty interesting to see what amounts to another company's take on these three classic games.

      They were trying to sell this idea of a general purpose multimedia device, forward thinking in a way but poorly executed. And also, very unlycky timing. The CDI kickstarted support for many formats that went almost nowhere (Photo CD, Video CD, CD+Graphics) while being too early to take advantage of really successfull formats (like the DVD). There was a crapload of dictionaries and encyclopedias, but good luck with them on a 15 Khz TV and no printer output! As a gaming console, it would be a very basic 16 bit machine at best given the specs. The games are what they are: traditional games like platformers are more or less public domain Amiga level (ok, that was too harsh..sometimes commercial Amiga level, but it ain't saying much for what was sold as a next gen machine..). Adventure games with full motion video..well they weren't very good even then and it didn't take much for people to realise it and put an end on the fad. You can play lightgun games even without a CRT, so I guess this is a positive? Also, Tetris has a fantastic red book audio soundtrack, but that has hardly anything to do with the CDi itself!

    what is it with all these weird consoles nobody actually cares about and screwing up basic things.

    • @jeremyabbott4537
      @jeremyabbott4537 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      also in the original, the ghosts have 2 modes, one where they seek Pac Man, and another where they each are programmed to return to 1 of the four corners. Also their tracking AI has intentional "flaws" in which they might take a more roundabout way to get to Pac Man. If you get ghosts in a certain pattern you can actually leave Pac Man at certain points in the maze facing a certain direction and the ghosts will never get him.

    The credits are a common thing on CD-i games. I don't know if I ever played a game on it that didn't had one.
    About Ms. Pac-Man: Have you tried a faster cursor speed? The controller has a switch on the bottom that changes the speed of the cursor when using the d-pad. Maybe that'll make Ms. Pac-Man faster.

    • @FrameRater
      @FrameRater  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would they have a mode for speed if you could change it on the controller? I recall trying this and it didn't change anything.

    • @ImpergatoxYT
      @ImpergatoxYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrameRater The speed switch on the controller is a hardware solution while the speed mode is a game option. Input devices like the CD-i remote or the CD-i Trackball can move the cursor on different speed levels depending on how hard you press the disc on the remote or how fast you spin the trackball. The controller can't do that given it's digital input. The switch on the controller is there to switch between speed levels for scenarios where you want to move the cursor fast and scenarios where you want to move the cursor precise. It kinfa emulates the different speed levels of other CD-i input devices. That's why I thought that the switch might fix the problem in Ms. Pac-Man. But I wouldn't be surprised if the game doesn't support different speed levels from the input and just stick to one. The speed mode in the game has a different purpose. It is a gameplay option for all controllers after all, so it would be weird to bind it to the switch of one specific controller.

    Wow, lots of uploads lately. I thought from your previous videos that you kinda were thinking about stopping, or at least doing much less. This is a nice surprise.

    hello, how'd you get this PAL CDi to display color on your capture? I have the same CDi but it's screwy on my NTSC TV of course. Do you have some kind of signal conversion box? I'm trying to find something like that.

    You should play the X68000 version of Bosconian. It was recomposed by Yuzo Koshiro.

      Assuming the two you're talking about are the TH-cam Poop material, there's a third in this unholy Triforce: Zelda's Adventure.

    Keep a timer going while recording footage so you can note and time stamp something you want to reference later, such as the weird input problems during Ms. Pac-Man

    That pacman collection on steam is a contender (granted it was delisted probably for that reason), games included while solid they did some not so nice things including charging extra for ms pacman (which could be bought for less as a stand alone on steam at the same time of the release!) forced resolution that didn't play nicely with many displays and bare bone extras.... you could pretty much were better off using mame.... nothings more fun than playing pacman and 12 seconds later getting dragged out of the game to deal with "This application is using a lower resolution" or whatnot.

    If only those games had fmv cut scenes, it might could,ve became a tolerable game,but sadly they didn’t and it’s an utter shame that pacman is not in full screen but just zoomed in wich is a shame since the CDI can handle pal & ntsc resolutions,what a shame,
    Altrough am curious about those arcade quiz games but that’s it.
