My aunt is alot like Barbara. She too has been part of several church groups and the drama she puts up with from the members and their petty squabbles is beyond ridiculous. Despite the hostilities, she still sticks around because of how much being at church means to her.
I know exactly what Barbara Howard is talking about. Growing up in a church you really can’t win anywhere. In the world if they see you in a skirt you’re too Christian. At church if you put a little lip gloss you’re too modern. You really can’t be yourself that’s the problem. My friends never invite me out because they think I’m too goody goody and no one at church wants me to participate on anything because I listen to Kpop or something. Thirty plus years later still trying to figure out who I am. I get the stares and the mockery wherever I go, like I said can’t win. Kudos on Ava she did good standing up for Barbara, giving her very own show. That was really sweet coming from Ava sisterhood went really high on this episode. Ava and Barbara, Melissa and Jenine. When I watched this episode, I got chills because Barbara's story is mine. I love going to church and I love listening to worship music because that's when I feel the closest to God. I also still like nerdy things, wearing red lipstick, have two piercings in each ear and drinking red wine. My best friend is doesn't go to church and probably never will yet she is the only person I know who doesn't treat me like I'm a weirdo for being me. And because of this, I struggle with my faith because I feel like I'm not a "good Christian." I wholeheartedly believe God doesn't look at the outside. He looks at the heart. I wish "church folks" would stop judging others just because they don't fit the mold of what a Christian should look like
Yeah I totally agree with this tbh and I can relate because people always questioned my faith in god growing up and that bothered me but I know now that you don’t have to live up to other people’s standards to be a Christian
