Midori Ito was one of the first skaters that I remember seeing on TV. I have always loved her technical abilities: the way she gets into her jumps, the height of the jumps, and the speed going into and out of jumps. They're phenomenal!
When I first started skating, I realized just how hard it was to attain those jumping abilities. Midori became one of my idols. I finally had a chance to meet her when we both competed in this year's ISU International Adult Competition! She is so tiny in person, which made me realize just how phenomenal she was to be able to jump as high as she does. I loved how happy and bubbly she was throughout the week, and she is so supportive of her fellow teammates. I loved seeing the Japanese team cheer for each other in the Kiss and Cry!
Watching her freeskate, I couldn't help but feel proud to witness her return to competition. I apologize that the video ended where it did as my video recorder stopped :( I got chills as the whole arena gave her a standing ovation. Well deserved! She is the best!! Saikou!

選手時代のようにトレーニングしているわけではないですよね？ 超人ですか。
それに体全体に現れてる、楽しんでる感じ。彼女ほど楽しそうに滑る人はフィギュア史上いないんじゃないでしょうか。ほんとに素晴らしい。
大河ドラマ史上最高傑作と名高いこの名曲、「篤姫のテーマ」のせつないメロディーとみどりさんの２Ａ。
２Ａでこれほど感動できるなんて。今の競技会に行くより、この日のこの場所に居たかった。
唯一無二の美しいジャンプ。息を呑むジャンプ。昔と変わらないスピード
溢れるスケーティング。感動しました。
なんか3Aいけそう。。
もう本当に日本というか世界の誇りです！

She still has a great double axel and solid double jumps. Most skaters at that age have long given up the double axel. Ito always had the most joy of any skater....and she was THE cutest and most adorable girl on the ice. Still is.

2013年、みどりちゃんが42才の時ですね。☺️彼女の明るさと優しさと喜びに満ちたスケートを全ての女子選手は手本にするべきです。審判達の不公平は彼女がスケートを愛する気持ちを挫くことはできませんでした。彼女は大きな心の持ち主です。計算高いスケートなど、芸術でもスポーツでもありません。
今年もそうですが日本の曲で踊るみどりさんの演技も曲も日本の誇りです😃💕

違うカメラで見るとダブルアクセルがいかにデカイかがよくわかる。
ツルスケステップといいキャメルスピンの速さといい、これほどのスケーターは今後出る気がしない。

Imagine qualifying as an adult (older) skater for an international competition and then finding out you have to skate against former Olympian, Midori Ito. LOL. She's still got it!

Wアクセルでも他の選手が緊張して飛んでた時代にエキシビジョンで１０回ぐらい連続で飛んでた。周りの海外選手も呆れて拍手するしかなかった。
I think in a tv show recently, she said if it's a 2A, I can still land it. She was probably around 47.
She had a 2A and a 2A-2T combo in her program at the 2019 Oberstdorf adult competition. Unfortunately, didn't land either cleanly. I believe I have seen video of her landing a *spectacular* 2A in a warm-up at same competition in 2018, but can't find it right now. (She only competed in artistic skating that year, so no jumps in her program.)

Watching her in 1988 is what got me hooked on ice skating. I have to admit I got a little teary watching this. She still has that huge double axel!

I am so happy she has found adult competition something worth coming back for. To skate at the adult level and then to return for a second time is amazing! She is an inspiration to many of us and beautiful to watch!

Queen of the jumps. Midori along with Harding and Bonaly were my favorites. There is grace and beauty in sheer power and athleticism.

海外のスポーツファンは日本人に比べると、自分の愛好するスポーツの歴史に対して敬意を払う傾向があるように思うよ。
フィギュアスケートではないけど、例えばNZでは（ラグビーの）史上最高のLOと言われれば誰もが永遠きコリン・ミーズと答えるだろうし、同じくウェールズで史上最高のSHと聞かれれば全員がガレス・エドワーズと答えるようにね。
その点で日本人の多くは軽薄というかミーハーというか、現在活躍中で人気の選手ばかり追いかけて、歴史に対して興味が薄い人が多いんだろう。
以前にスポーツ雑誌のNumberで野球についての特集があって「12球団の伝説のベストナイン」って企画があったんだけど、そこでも「伝説」と言いながら現役選手を多数選んでた。そして沢村や影浦などの真のレジェンドを「古すぎるから」なんて言う理由で外していたからね。スポーツ専門誌でさえこんなザマだから、日本に過去の名選手を心からリスペクトする文化なんて定着しにくいんだろうね。
この方は失礼ながら真央ちゃん、坂本さんも言う事無しですが、話題のワエリワちゃんを超えてワタクシは最高の妖精だと思います。みどりさんのスケートが一番！好きかも。また生まれ変わってもスケーターになって伝説になると思います！

なんて楽しそうに滑るんでしょう…素敵ですね…。フィギュアスケートをはじめてみたのは小学生の時に伊藤みどりさんが最初だったと思いますが、これがフィギュアスケート選手なんだと思ってしまったもので、それ以降の選手のジャンプとか表情とか、窮屈そうだなぁとずっと思っていました。でもこの方が特別だったんですね…。
Does everyone know how old she is? She did more than great at her age. After she retired from figure skating, she kept practicing. Look at her jumps, spins and flexibility. みどりさん、すごすぎです。引退後も努力や練習を怠らなかったことが見てとれます。この年であのジャンプ、あのスピン、そして柔軟さ、素晴らしいですね。Thank you so much for sharing this video.

She was 18 at the 1988 Olympics so she is my age so she's 50 now. Not exactly sure how old in this video tho but she's still a legend at any age! 😍
You have to be training to skate like this at her age/stage. Skating as an adult is SO hard! Look at Zagitova. She’s doesn’t even do single jumps nor has any speed or even proper posture any more and she is most recent Olympic gold medalist and only 19. You have to train or you lose it all. Hats off to Midori Ito, legend.

A skating friend of mine skates Obi, and he actually got to meet her. Says it was a joy to meet her and watch her skate. (Wished the person with the bell, or whatever it was, would stop ringing it everytime she completes an element though...)

I used to skate in adult competitions in the US. I love this woman but it hardly seems fair to show up and find out you're competing against probably the greatest figure skater who ever lived and whose programs would still win Olympic Gold Medals 30 years after she competed. LOL.

years old.Officially she did it in Japanese national game at 27 years old.
She sure was exciting to watch. Ito had the most graceful triple axel in history. Tonya Harding had the most exciting one.
The last time she attempted 3A in competition was 2001 Japan open where she stepped out of it.
