  • Discover the new gladiator exhibit in the hypogeum (underground rooms) beneath the Colosseum, including the tunnel that linked the Colosseum to the Ludus Magnus - great gladiator school - featured in the film Gladiator with Russell Crowe.
A big thank you to Hornblower Group who invited me to the inauguration of this spectacular exhibition. In partnership with the Parco archeologico del Colosseo (PArCo), this all-new exhibition and multimedia installation will transport visitors back nearly 2,000 years to Ancient Rome reviving the scenes of the passage of the gladiators from the tunnel that connected Ludus Magnus.
A special shout out as well to the subsidiary group of Hornblower Group: Walks, part of Hornblower Group’s portfolio under its brand City Experiences, was one of the first tour operators to partner with the Colosseum and launched the Colosseum Underground Tour. Check it out for your future Rome visits! www.walksofitaly.com

OMG…My Mom and I visited the Colosseum in the early 80’s. At that time getting down to the Hypogeum was not possible because there was so much over growth and flooding. It was also home to masses of feral cats and other animals. It’s now time to revisit Rome.

After I watch your videos, I always sit here wondering what ancient Rome was like. Would it have been a hard life? Exciting? Exhilarating? The marvels of Rome.

Great questions... Your status could be a huge factor. But life was typically quite hard. Basic amenities for us would have been a luxury. Still, what an amazing city to have witnessed!

    • @MonsieurChapeau
      @MonsieurChapeau 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

It was hard. Basic amenities were lacking as Darius mentions and also basic human rights, like the right to personal safely such as the right to freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Did not exist unless you had wealth and reputation. Article of the UDHR was centuries away. Let is be grateful. But also feel fortunate to have access to the ancient world, a heritage of every human being.

Interesting fact our modern arenas follow the same design. The colosseum uses the same methods to allow people to enter and exit the building as we do today. The only improvements that we use are escalators and elevators.

Such a massive and elaborate place. Their engineering minds were remarkable, even compared to today's architecture and technology. Although the brutality for entertainment could be compared to the brutality of a criminals death sentence, they still had the needs and civility for a referee.
Where or what is your favorite place in Italy?
I would love to get there, but if I can't, I can see through your videos. Thank you so much.

I once had a backstage tour of Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in London.
Underneath the stage it looked just like the Colosseum’s Hypogeum would have done, with lifts, carousels, trapdoors, animal puppets and costumes hanging on rails.
Funny how some things never change!

I did Roman re enacting and trained to make the kit and i have to laugh when i hear the phrase .. Parade helmet, because it is decorative, really...... The Romans were showy and loved decoration and also painted everything.. including their kit, ...
They didn't have the money to have such amazing helmets made just to wear them on some parade..also the Gladiator schools had plenty of people on site to repair and restore any damaged kit.

Kui keiser oleks küsinud, kuidas nemad ise põldu hooldavad ja alla 25-aastased noormehed ja neiud, olid Kalaverkot ja Heinä-Hangot end Colosseumi juures gladiaatoritena kaitsnud.

I have a hypogaium under my house. Actually every house in my country has a hypogaium. It is called ΥΠΟΓΕΙΟΝ, and is the place a strict parent will send his nauty children. ΥΠΟ ΓΑΙΑΝ, or UNDER EARTH, or basement actually. We keep old stuff from our grandparents there. It smells bad, and occasionally has mouse 🐀 living in it. 😅😅😅
HOPOMAHUS we don't have. But we have ΟΠΛΟΜΑΧΟΣ. The greek army. They always fight with weapons, ΟΠΛΟ = weapon, and ΜΑΧΗ = fight.
Interesting how in greek you glue two or more words, and make a new one, and after everybody uses it with pride 😊

Ha, I would rather get as far away as possible from the lives of the gladiators (and even further away from the lives of the people executed in places like this). The video is very interesting though.

Oli keisari kysynyt miten pitävät peltoja itsellään ja alle 25 vuotta iältään nuoret miehet ja naiset olivat Kalaverkot ja Heinä-Hangot puolustautuneet Gladiaattoreina Colosseumilla

Do you have to translate the Latin yourself or were you taught to pronounce it that way? That's the 3rd way I hear "hypogeum" pronounced in English.
