    Shortly after he beat Chris there was a big crowd in a semi-circle around Steve out the back of Dicey Reilly's on Harcourt st. Everyone was just staring at him. I walked up to him, stuck my hand out and said "Steve Collins, champion of the world, congratulations." He said "Thanks Bud, appreciate it." The precursor to McGregor's self-efficacy. Brilliant. Great days for Irish boxing.

    I went into watching this genuinely neutral. For mine Eubank was robbed......
    Should he have stopped clowning around and poured it all on in the 10th? Absolutely, he blew that. But even with that factored in, as the champion he did more than enough over the 12 rounds to retain his title.

      @Simon P I've heard some really funny and ridiculous comments regarding Eubank beating Collins, bla bla, but if you reckon he would have beaten Collins in 90, thats a joke, absolutely no, not a chance. In 90, the best Middleweight on the Planet, Mike Mc Callum was at his peak, in February , he beat Collins on pts in a tough fight, just 2 months later, he comprehensively beat Britains best Middleweight , Michael Watson in 11 rds. Watson destroyed Nigel Benn just 10 months before in 6 rds. Collins would have beat him easily, he was used to fighting against far better opposition .

    • @francishegarty8087
      @francishegarty8087 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Simon P l'm not smoking anything , I also saw and was at the 2nd Eubank fight were Collins won almost every round. Mike Mc Callum would have destroyed Eubank back then easily. If Eubank and Benn were so good, how come they never fought Mc Callum, Kalambay, Johnson ,RJJ, Toney, Nunn etc and try to Unify their Divisions ? Why not try to aspire to be someone who could be called a Unified, Undisputed Champion like Minter did, albeit for a short time? Trust me on this, how come they didn't fight Collins from 92 - 95? I know the real reasons why, they were advised by their camps to avoid him, facts.

    • @francishegarty8087
      @francishegarty8087 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Simon P Just to add, Eubank got very lucky wins and draws V Watson, Benn, Malinga and Close, twice. As a fight fan, I'm proud and privileged to have seen him box but I'am also aware of how lazy he was, lackadaisical and his belief of turning up to win? I rate Eubank as being very good, but that's it, a fantastic chin, very tough but a Great, no. Ask anybody who knows the Sport in America, just where does Eubank fit in the 160 - 168 Divisions from 90 - 96 and see what they have to say, they don't rate him at all, have you ever asked yourself why?

    • @martinp17
      @martinp17 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ' Eubank was way too trigger shy' listening to him talk in a show which featured several of his boxing generation including Collins' Eubank is a very articulate man and it kind of adds up (at least to me) that he may well have 'over thought' the whole thing when in reality and as you say you have to keep punching away . Saying that he knocked Collins down at the end of the 10th and I wonder if he had done that earlier and chased Collins what might have happened. That was a very very tight match though...

    Collins does well fighting at a slowish rhythm, timing and balance on point. Defensively responsible with pretty quick reflexes. Not flashy but effective, gets out of the way by ducking under a lot of shots. Tough battle hardened and it’s obvious that he can hit hard. Has a good straight jab as well. counter punching is his forte, repels attacks effectively by split second counters. Allows him to steal the play and maintain momentum. Eubank not at his best here, psych himself out not confident. Threw wide ineffective lunging shots

      @strawdog *80* All 3 judges gave it to Collins 116-114, 115-111 and 114-113.
      However, Eubank clearly knocked Collins down in round 2 which would have been his round 10-8 but the referee did not aknowledge it, if he did then Eubank would have got a split decision.

      @Ian Knight Great post my friend and you are right about Mc Callum, an absolute Legend who would have mangled Benn and Eubank back in the early 90s if they had the balls to fight him. At least Watson and Collins had balls and fought him with Stevo giving him trouble only losing on pts. I don't agree with you about Hagler ducking him as he was operating at 154 up to Hagler's last fight in early 87 but SRL definitely avoided him like the plague along with lots of others. I regard him as the 3rd best Middleweight of the last 50 years, behind Carlos Monzon, 2nd and the Marvelous 1, Hagler no 1.

Gary Mason was very honest with his assessment of the fight and said Steve was a worthy winner and although he was the 1st man to beat Eubank officially, not the 1st to beat him unofficially as Watson, Benn and Ray Close, 2 times were ripped off imo big time.

      You can say what you want about Eubank but remember no one ever knocked him out or TKO'd him. The 2nd Watson fight, tragic as it was, showed how Eu was capable of coming back from the brink. And Eu also showed a sensitive human side after that fight by vowing never to to knock opponents out again but rather just win on points.

    It's almost like a fencing match. Especially in the early rounds, lots of feinting, micromovements and misdirection followed by a lunging combination attack which the defender tries to defend and counter, and after that sequence they both reset to distance and do it again. It's like they came to an unspoken agreement that they were going to fight each other in that rhythm. I'd heard about this match but never saw either of these fighters and this wasn't what I was expecting at all. Entertaining but sort of a strange fight.

      Just watching the slow motion replays at times a lot of Collins punches missed, might have been counted as scoring punches because a lot of them were very close to being scoring punches but not quite when you see the slow motion, lot of crowd noise when he was missing that might have swayed the judges. I suppose hard to see at normal speed for the judges ringside. Eubank made him miss a lot. Probably the same for both I suppose.
