You’ve gotta love how smooth animation mostly appears in fighting scenes….and lumity scenes. It is like an unspoken rule that big lumity moments must be as smooth or as shocking as possible.
5:33 In that scene there's almost an imperceivable switch to the fight animation style. It's really a blink and you miss it kind of thing. For me it was the very subtle movement of his head & hands and the very slight extra detail in the shading that tipped me off that there was going to be a fight. Very impressive.

I'm pretty sure the chase sequence is meant to be a reference. After all the show itself is heavily inspired by howl's moving castle (well at least I think? Like, the title sounds like a pun on howl/owl and hooty is basically calcifer)
We'll probably never know enough to say for sure, and Dana did say it was the only option she would want to choose, but I really feel like this show was held back by disney TVA... The budget held back the animation and story, as well as having to tone stuff down to be presentable to a child audience, not even mentioning the shortened third season... I really wish we could live in a world where we could see EXACTLY what Dana would've made if she could do exactly what she wanted. But I guess these clips and some of the art she's uploaded are pretty dang close to what we would've gotten anyways, so thats a plus!
to be completely fair tho, dana has stated that disney was the better option for her show when she submitted it, especially because she could have episodes that lasted 20 minutes instead of 10; and considering what happened to inside job and infinitu train, we are "lucky" we still got to have a season 3 to finish the story (obviously this doesn't erase all the shit disney did)
Im pretty sure the reason the animation smoothness increases the majority of the time is because with fight scenes, they have to make more frames to smoothen it out, hence why it's more smooth. And then they're the important parts that they have to make pop out, so it's more smooth. Just my take on it, I don't know the real reason. edit: guys when I made this comment I didn't really want to be corrected, I had just wanted to say what I thought. I'm an animator myself, though I don't show it, and when im making fighting scenes theyre usually smoother for me. I get this is not the same thing with everyone, and I'm sorry if I offended you because of it. everyone has different things, and this was just how I saw it.
That can work too. As an animator, and if given the creative freedom, it can be as fluid as you want. The direction for these scenes probably or definitely were given a go signal to go freely and not just on 2s (2 frames per second) and why it's so smooth is a feature film level of animation than regular TV animation.
The timing and spacing for these scenes are just chef's kiss. Not every 2D animated show is given free reign like this all the time, depends on what the instructions are.
The real reason is Spencer Wan, master animator. He was also the animation director of the Castlevania show and animated the Hades trailers. It doesn't just boil down to how many frames are used, it takes a really creative and skilled mind like Spencer's to make really satisfying movement. The majority of animation is done overseas, but Spencer Wan was an in-house animator who animated most if not all of the scenes in this video. Apparently disney was opposed to having an in-house animator like Spencer Wan because disney just loves being terrible.
Fight scenes actually lend themselves well to lower frame rates- too many inbetweens can be a detriment to them. Spencer Wan (and a few others i cant remember) were specifically called in to animate these parts and make them pop ^^
@@Carossmo I'm an animation nerd. Yeah when you pay for the good stuff you get the good stuff. The majority of the inbetween work going from storyboards and animatics are going to Korean studios. But when you really want something that's fluid and stays completely on model you pay someone a lot of money. I don't know who's animating these scenes or if it's more than one person but the director figures that these particular scenes are the most important to have expensive in house animation. The entire series is hand drawn animation with no puppet rigs and zero to minimal tweening if any exists, haven't noticed any myself. I love that the normies are starting to appreciate the effort that comes from creating 2d animation, even if they don't know the ins and outs it's helpful to the industry. Your average joes, janes, and junipers are looking for quality. Disney is great at making bad choices, hopefully this spills over into other networks and projects so Disney actually has to fight for viewership again.
Every Eda/Lilith fight, every Hunter fight, the Amity/Luz dance, the Eda/Raine melody, every time Willow stops holding back, and Titan Luz are my absolute favourite moments in this video.
You can just tell how dedicated the animation team was to making this show look amazing 8:03 Also that little moment of Eda showering Raine in smooches may be one of the cutest things I've ever seen 🥺
I do believe the main 3-4 animators used for smooth shots like these are: Spencer Wan with Season 1 He owns an anime based studio and professionalizes in the field! Season 2 was Tom Barkel, a mainly Flying Bark Studio's animator but he gets around. The main exception to him being oriented with S2 is specifically 4:08 Dana herself animated that bit. S3 Also had a bit of Tom Barkel, As well as Husain Untoro for the finale! Husain Untoro get's around a lot too, from Netflix to Riot to Dreamworks. Also animated on Helluva Boss a little bit!
I swear the animation in the last episode was the smoothest I’ve seen all seasons since the intro. Like is A grade, movie quality smoothness. They DID NOT HOLD BACK.
Funny thing: the animation director (as well as the guy who made pretty much all the pilot and S1 clips) is Spencer Wan, who usually does work on Anime. He also directed the Castlevania series
The animation team really put their heart into those few special scenes, they just have so much life and detail! I can’t imagine how amazing it would be if the whole show were like that (even though that would be sooooo much more work for them)

He's absolutely amazing. I really just wanted to put a name to some of these shots.
They just poured the last of the animation budget in the last episode. They were like "if it's going to end, might as well make Disney go bankrupt by using what budget we have left!"
i like how some parts aren’t even technically “smooth” (not all just some) and some actually go lower in frame rate, goes to show how animation can have more of an impact if you highlight important frames
Hunter battling kiki has always been my favorite animation moment. Also when he did that little staff swipe into golden guard uniform in that recruitment episode with darius. I audibly gasped because of how brain scratchy it was 🥰
If anyone's wondering animator names, I recognize at least 3 of them Most of the season 1 clips are animated or storyboarded by Spencer Wan (storyboards are, for scenes like this, a rough version of the animation so it's almost the same thing) He made the first two clips from the intro, all the opening clips, basically every clip shown from ep 1, 4, 5, 16, and 18 (he also boarded the scene of inner willow in ep 15) not 100% sure if he worked on the clips in the finale though. Unsure who made the clips in 2x6 and 7, but Dana herself made the fight in 2x9, I think the clip after was a very short Spencer Wan bit, and the rest is unknown until the Lumity Kiss, which is Tom Barkel, as well as every clip after that until the scene where Camila and Luz are talking. Unsure who did all the Titan Luz scenes, but a lot of the parts look like Spencer Wan's style so I assume he did some work. The part where eda and luz spin around together looks like Dana's style so that could be her. Then it's more unknown until Luz starts running up to Belos, where Tom Barkel comes back in full force for the finale. Great stuff by everyone involved!
