  • Patrick McKeown is the founder of Oxygen Advantage, a TEDx speaker, and an author. He is a leading international expert on breathing and sleep and the author of bestselling books, including 'The Oxygen Advantage.'
When I called Patrick to invite him to the show, I said to him, "We won't stop recording until the topic of 'breathing' has been fully covered with no details overlooked."
And he surely lived up to that. Sit back and expect to learn everything there is to know about breathing.

I've had a Deviated Nasal septum for quite some time and at one point, required to get it corrected via surgery. I then, also had my Adenoids removed as they were swollen due to infection during my surgery. As a mouth breather for the majority of my sleep life, this episode has been a life-changer and I've learned a lot about how the simple act of breathing correctly can change your entire mood and lifestyle. This work is amazing! Can't wait for many more to come.

At 76 I recognize myself as a mouth breather. This is a real problem for a person who just had a 4 vessel Heart ByPass. I developed atelectasis with left pleural effusion due to my shallow mouth breathing. I'm trying to retrain myself to breath through my nose and I notice how hard it is to do. Even so I do think it will to my best interest to change.

Great chat. Thank you. Bit of a misrepresentation in your thumbnail, Patrick doesn’t say deep breathing is bullsh*t lol, he says deep breathing is good but it’s more that our idea of what a deep breath is, is askew. An actual deep breath ie with the diaphragm and through the nose, is good. Putting those words next to his face makes it look like that’s what he’s saying.
I guess it’s click bait but to me it’s misleading and if someone just sees the thumbnail and doesn’t watch the video, they’ll think that’s what he’s about, which he isn’t.
Patrick is so knowledgeable, always super interesting and seems such an awesome guy who IMHO well deserves to be represented in truth.
That said, I’m really grateful for this conversation, great questions and flow you two, the matter of breathing was well covered with your questioning. Thank you again 😁🙏🏻

Even i thought this gotta be one of the stupid guys, who just claims to be advertising his self proclaimed yoga or a product. Turns out he got plenty of value stuff. So agreed.

@@sakshamsharma6947 thank you, yes i think it may have the reverse effect for some people and actually put them off watching. If I wasn't already on a Patrick Mackeown video mega binge watching and knew and respected his stuff, I may well have avoided this because of the thumbnail 😁😘

The phenomenon you mentioned where the heart rate links with the beat of music is called entrainment. And it's to do with brain wave patterns, in which brain wave speeds affect heart rate and heart rate affects brain wave speeds. The brain waves match up to the frequency of what is being input into the ears.
There are lots of brain wave apps out there which use binaural beats to entrain brain wave frequency. For instance, when the body and brain are deeply relaxed the brain frequency is in the Theta range, and heart rate will correspond to that. When we want to relax, We can listen to binaural beats within the Theta frequency range and our brain will automatically follow it and match it, along with our heart rate and breathing.
    It's a fascinating subject.

Amazing information!!! I stopped days of being short of breath and feeling borderline asthma by doing the breathing recommended in Patrick's book , Oxygen Advantage. Only one round of the breathing exercise worked. 😊

What about Joe Dispenza who videos ask you to take these deep breaths and hold for about 30sec or more. He has done a lot of research on this - everybody is telling you to breath differently - who do you believe??

Change the title. It's misleading and does not represent the mans professional view. Great episode other than the title!
