My mother used to work in a Murphy television factory near Aberdare in South Wales from the mid fifties to the early sixties, she used to fit scan coils and adjust for a correct picture, later she moved to Birmingham and worked at a Murphy factory there, possibly on military equipment (she remembered having to sign the official secrets act) so never said much about what she did there. She is no longer with us otherwise I could asked her about memories of working there but I remember her saying she enjoyed working for Murphy in Wales and Birmingham, she left when she was married, as was common then.

My Parents had a 1960s Daul Standard TV with a VHF FM Radio. It was rented from DER.

Always good to see a 405 Line TV they bring back so many memories of my Childhood.

Brings back memories seeing that. I salvaged one in the 70s and had it working in my room as a kid for a few years but the tube was a bit tired in the end. Remember being surprised to find the LOPT in oil in a can.

I had no idea that Murphy sets were so well designed and built, at least from this era. Thanks for showing us this, it;s a great little set.

One of the best tv sets I've ever seen, very robust and easy to get access to the chassis. The radio also sounds brilliant.

I love it. The oil-dipped LOPT is a very nice touch; my Sony 9-90 gets a bit unpleasant after a while.

That is a nice set, shame the 405 line system shut down as many of my memories of British TV involve it. I’m watching Bandersentv, as he has a Pye 263 which was used as a decoration in an Irish style pub in Chicago. He’s figured out he can use a US CRT as the original is missing it’s neck. There’s not likely to be anything beyond the initial examination as he has a lot of Philco Predictors to restore.

Hi. Glad the old girl is working well. I had also the later V430 and it was my radio for many years after the 405 line switch off. Mind and add a resistor in parallel with the cap droppers, so it don't spark. Best do both caps and probably a 47k

Gorgeous set. Like you say...if AEC designed and built TVs. Has an aerospace look about it. My Murphy 192 radio has that same aesthetically pleasing engineered look when peering in the back with the back off.

I have the V310. These barrell bodied Murphy sets really are superb performers. I also have a console model, though that one is waiting for me in Peterborough.
Keep an eye out for a V216. It's a roundie and what a big bulb it has! I had one about fifty years ago, and was able to get another one about five years back. It's a huge sixteen inch screen. I've also got a V350 transportable, which has a square fourteen inch screen.
I tell ya, these Murphy's are great. If you get one, you're almost guaranteed to get another!

back in the 60s my dad repaired Tv sets .We had one of these in the lounge however the on off switch mechanism was broken .Dad had installed a simple toggle switch on the back of the set for turning it on and off but he pack panel was left off for some reason .As a young boy i was constantly told never to go behind the Tv and never to touch it [and what would happen to me if i did ]

Sadly the bean counters lust for profit ruins most good designs.
Nice well laid out set, only briefly saw oil filled LOPT's when I first started as apprentice back in 81 when I was instructed to bin old sets from the stock room.
never imagined any future interest !

Murphy made some strange things, I read in the Murphy news a few weeks ago one particular TV set used the metal stand as the radio aerial, what model is your set?

    • @IrishvintageTVRadio

A V330. I take it the Murphy News wasn't published a few weeks ago! 🤣

Was that TV/VHF radio combo common in sets at the time? I had a Philips portable in the 00s with analogue (UHF/VHF I think...) tv and FM radio built in.

@@IrishvintageTVRadio to be fair, I think it should be allowed a segment of the spectrum, for enthusiasts... like HAMs do amateur tv, but in the old VHF 405 broadcast band to allow old sets to run...if they can manage dozens of MHz for 5G, they can manage 5 or so for a vintage channel :)
Edit: they could do the same for 625 UHF

    • @IrishvintageTVRadio
      @IrishvintageTVRadio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It'll never happen in the UHF band as it's to valuable a piece of spectrum. There are plans for 405 though.. Check out 405-line.tv
