- Today on XboxerBriefs, we'll take a brief look at another attempt to launch a new first party fighting franchise to the Original Xbox. This is Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus!
XboxerBriefs are short form video game reviews focusing on the original Xbox and Xbox family of consoles. The style is very much inspired by other gaming channels, such as @SNESDrunk and @NESFriend.

Never played this but from first impressions it has some pretty big problems like the camera constantly switching around, janky animations and the ridiculous hit stuns in this game.
I have one question. Does the limb damage actually effect the properties of the moves or is it just a damage debuff?
Because if it's just a damage debuff while you can still do the same combo it's a rather negligible disadvantage since it seems like Tao Feng has the same combos as MK where once you get hit by any combo you are forced to eat the combo with no way to defend against it.
Bushido Blade had a limb damage system but also had it where if you had your arm cut you couldn't use that arm anymore in the entire match or your leg getting cut will affect your movement.
That's a really good point - as far as I was able to determine, it's simply a damage debuff. I appreciate the extra insight on this - it's good to hear from others who are more fighting game savvy and can pick out some of these smaller details!
Dude this game is 20years old but I promise you it was one of the best fighting game back then
@@carltonbowman8758 I'll see once I managed to find a copy.
I actually like this game, not great but it's fun.
Looking at the box art; it looked like it was another game genre. I found out about this game when I was in a game store. It always mesmerized me like damn the art is a face and that's it.
I'm big into og xb right now so loving your channel, keep up the good work !
Thank you! I'm so happy to see more and more people paying attention to the Xbox library.
This was my first ever fighting game. The memories 😩
I held a "Bad Fighting Game Night" a few years ago with this and Kakuto Chojin - Chojin we actually had fun with but Tao Feng just felt like a miserable experience. I might give it another try some day.
That game was soo much fun wish they remade it the characters were great and the concept was great as well as story
I'm not a fighting guy but looks decent enough. Really enjoying getting a closer look at all of the Xbox exclusives. Keep up the good work Musty.
This Game gets way too much praise. It wasn't bad yet it wasn't good either. It was rushed out way to soon but they knew it would sell being on a new system and with enough advertising that's exactly what it did. But it wasn't enough for Fighting game Fans to bite long enough to keep buying a mild game at best compared to better games. So that's the last you heard of them.
Great video. I agree with your assessment of Tao Feng. While not the best fighter for Xbox or the gen there is a lot to appreciate if you simply look at what they accomplished visually and game play structure. It's definitely better with two players, because the cpu takes total advantage of limb damage and focusing chi attacks. I loved this game for a few days and couldn't fathom what was really wrong. Reminded me of Killer Instinct to a degree. You have to be okay with canned animations, which is what early Mortal Kombat games were about. I wonder what John Tobias is up to these days.
I played this game back in the day with a group of friends and we had a blast.
Yay! New video.
We need fire and ice rivals characters in that games.
They really need to bring the game back
Great review! The only problem I have with it is that the game isn't on a 2D plain as you claimed. In fact it is encouraged to move around the arena in order to trigger specific attacks.
Just great. I don't understand the hate under the game
Excellent video!!
I just know this game exist, nice Mortal Kombat killer at that time
Would make good guest characters in Mortal Kombat
I loved this game, very original. The boss was cheap though and the story was lame. However the combat is fun, and the environments are robust and can be interacted with used to add more damage. The limb was a debuff for the arms but they make it harder to block, however if your leg was damaged your movements would be slower as well as weaker. I loved knocking my friends around the arcade board, great first game that could have potentially spawned better ones for an awesome series. I digress, people are still stuck on 2D fighters with 3D models🤷🏿♂️👑
I remember having a decent time with this one and I feel it got some unwanted flak back then. Now is it better than Kakuto Chojin? I guess I'll need to find out sometime soon! :D
I feel like they both aim to accomplish different things, but this one seems more aligned with traditional fighting games, which makes sense with the people behind the game. KC is still worth a try, in my opinion. Thanks, Popka!
this game is my childhood lol
Me and my friends loved this game. While it wasn't the greatest it was fun.
Ese juego venía con la Xbox cuando me la compraron, la vdd a mí me entretenía mucho, pues era un niño de escasos 3 años
Good looking game for the time
Geez Xbox has so many dead IPs that really could use a revisit.
I played this. I'll say at the time it was groundbreaking. At the time it was better than any out. Breaking a limb was very strategic. Changed the whole fight. Do I block or take the hit. At least I'll hit full power.
Second their was no online yet so you played cpu but it really got fun when you advanced the difficulty..
I liked this game they should make a new game like this. Like mortal Kom at took the limb damage. And body damage and put that in mortal kombat. Now we have things like x rays environmental moves as a norm. I may have been bad if you judge it against a newer game. But we also had Def jam which followed the same damage concept. I really enjoyed this game. Wroth atleast a play. An opportunity
Urban reign, def jam fight takeover have limbs damage as well
I don't think player 1 blocked a single attack in this whole video.
This was the first game I ever played with limb damage
Seems like a pretty decent fighting game, and it's always great when they try to do something new (ie limb damage and visual damage). Solid review!
this is givng me tekken vibes
I can totally see that. You should check out Kakuto Chojin - that one is even more Tekken/Virtua Fighter like than this one.
