As someone from yorkshire i’d never dream of going to a chippy that served anything else but fish and chips.. a bread cake ( or what ever people call it) is deemed a fancy extra
My parents had Fish & Chip businesses in Leeds (est 1953) and Scarborough/Filey for over 40 years... I left school and went into the family business in 1979... Yorkshire Fish & Chips was all about quality not quantity. My parents would turn I their grave if they could see how the industry has involved.
The nicest fish & chips I've ever had are at a place called Umberto's on the docklands in Preston, Lancashire. Absolutely delicious, and best of all they do small portions for people like me who don't eat very much. Back in the day (late 90s & early 00s), they used to do pound specials which got you a small portion of chips, with either a small fish, a jumbo sausage, or various pies in a tray with a little pot of gravy on the side. Probably a couple or three quid now, but back then it was the best value meal in the area. Used to eat there every day at lunchtime. It's still there apparently. If you're ever in the area, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
You're correct about the boxes that they're served in these days - it steams the contents. Can't remember where, but once bought fish & chips & the polystyrene lid had triangular air vents built into it. Great, simple idea, - they should be made compulsory.👌
Please Lee - vary your videos a bit. I have been a fan for quite a while but I am afraid it is becoming a bit 'samey' with fish and chips and breakfasts. Do more videos about places of interest around the UK.

@@TheMacMaster Yes, I loved that one. So many are good but just lately you seem to have lost the plot. There are so many lovely towns and villages in the UK that you could show. I fully agree, we all love watching Lee's Video's but lately apart from the flying aircrafts there's just been to many fish & chips and Breakfast vlogs, come on Lee, when are we gonna be seeing the silver fox, Craicmaster, blonde Angel again it's been far to long not seeing your trips to America etc etc vlogs. As a sometime sea-angler, I can confirm that haddock are bottom feeders, same as cod. I don't mind a big of greasiness to the fish (just as I don't mind some fat on my bacon), as long as it's not swimming in the stuff. That fish alone would do me for the entire meal! You can even see where they cut the fish lengthwise to make two normal sized fillets. Glad to see no skin though, that earns a point. I'm somewhat older than you Lee, and I remember when you used to get a portion of chips that wasn't so huge that you end up throwing most of it away, it was a good amount of chips for a meal (when I bring fish and chips home now, I keep the leftover chips in the fridge and re-fry them the next day to have with a meat pie or something). Nowadays chip shops seem to all try to pack the box up with as many chips as they can, it's just a waste! Wrapping chips up in newspaper was banned because of the mercury used in the production of the paper. However, the use of mercury was banned decades before that! When I used to make fish and chips at home for the family, we don't bother with plates. Out comes some greaseproof paper and yesterdays Hull Daily Mail. Eat it off your knee like a proper Yorkshireman! As for that meal, I'll give it a 7. Batter could have been crisper and the chips should have been kept in the fryer for another minute or so. Gravy and curry sauce looked good, but running out of mushy peas? Wondering if they took them off the menu for some reason (bad batch maybe?).
Perhaps you dropped unlucky Lee as we went a fortnight ago and my sons both had the giant fish and they said it’s the best fish they had ever tasted away from a seaside town. Thanks for the fantastic videos Lee I spend my day off watching them and always enjoy the content
Looks like the batter was probably a couple of days old or something. Looks like the haddock was probably defrosted and that was why it had a lot of water in it.
Good price plenty of chips batter didn’t look brilliant nice bit of fish but straight out of the freezer reason for wet ,,gravy far to thick too much cornflour to thicken 6.5/10
Your fish was watery and greasy because it was probably cooked at too low a temperature which can also make the batter soggy instead of crispy. Frozen fish can also cause the fish to be watery
Hi Lee, hope you’re keeping well my friend. Have you ever had Fish & Chips cooked by Coal fire 🔥. As a child we use to stop off in a place in Lincolnshire called Stickney for Fish and chips, on the way to visit family up north. I can always remember being so excited, because the taste of them were delicious and so different to what we had at home. Those were the days my friend! Take care Lee and Onward’s ! 😎❤️xx
Apparently Haddock are bottom feeding fish and occur mainly in waters from 40-200m deep, but are found down to 350m. I like both Cod and Haddock but i like Haddock more. 🐟🐠

Harry Ramsden original chippy was at Guiseley White Cross, just a couple of miles from Murgatroyds. The premises were taken over by The Wetherby Whaler, (a small chain of of restaurants in the Leeds area),
Lee pop upto County Durham. There is a fish and chip shop in a small village of Esh Winning that is cooking fish and chips on a coal fire in beef dripping on a 100 year old range. The shop is called Fields.
That gravy was so gelatinous I bet when it was cold, it set like jelly - not for me. Chips looked okay if a bit anaemic but the fish looked dreadful surrounded by soggy batter. Very unappetising. x
They both are it’s says ie fish species groups are flat fish(halibut, flounder, plaice, sole),eels, cod, haddock, bass grouper, carp, bream ( snapper) all bottom feeders.
where i was born in the south ,it was rock ,or cod ,here in the north west its cod , the best fish ive ever had in several places is the west of scotland ,my late partner wouldnt eat cod ,hed always had haddock ,as the scottish prefere ,my sisterbought cod fillets from sainsburys years ago and it was full of maggots ,she took it back and was told in warm weather its common ,which is the reason i dont buy fresh fish out of shops ,haddock can be strong in flavour more so than cod ,as for iron brew ,its like drinking detol ,vile stuff ,same as root beer ,
After 53 years living in Yorkshire I can safely say it is not typical to have gravy or curry sauce on fish and chips. However you’ve been eating them in Leeds and they are a bit touched round there. You can’t take the fish and chips out of Yorkshire!
Got to disagree I've been living in Yorkshire for slightly less then you (47) years and curry sauce most definitely goes with Fish & Chips . As for gravy it's a no no for the fish but is perfectly acceptable on Chips
Lol, this had me laughing. There's about 25 chippies in York, 3 of which I would part with my hard earned to buy their fish & chips. The rest are el-crapola & a waste of spondulix. Not all Yorkshire fish and chips are good. I tend to take a drive to East Yorkshire to get decent fish & chips.
that look like a lovely dinner that's fish was beautiful chips well somewhat ho-hum looking but everything looked enjoyable and I'm so envious you get curry sauce on every dinner totally unavailable in the United States in area I'm at and I'm envious and I never even tried curry sauce LOL
The visual difference between the last weeks giant fish and chips and today was very stark. The crispiness was so much more clear last week. And it looked 2x as big too. I didn't get a good feeling looking at the menu. Not sure exactly what but I felt it.
Yeah have ro agree with you Lee, that didn't look great at all. When it first came out, i thought it seemed ok, but as soon as you started opening the fish up, it looked watery and the batter extremely doughy. It doesn't matter what the size of the fish is, a proper chippy would have cooked it correctly. I'm not a fan of mushy peas but did find it strange they didn't have any. It didn't exactly look busy in there when you went in. Gravy is a no no with fish and/or chips. You won't see much of that here in Birmingham. Although i have to say, the gravy did look lovely and the thickness was just how its meant to be. But gravy belongs on a roast dinner, sausage and mash, or a pie. I love curry sauce but it definitely needs a kick to it. Really hard to find a good chippy here in Brum. I definitely prefer them up north, on the coast, or down in Brixham. Another great one mate and I'll go no more than a 3/10. Thanks again mate and look forward to catching up with more vlogs tomorrow 👍🙂
We went to this branch when it very first opened and it was some of the best fish and chips my wife and I had ever had. Second visit only a few weeks later was still good but nowhere near the 1st. Been back 3 further times and it's ranged from just ok to barely edible. Can't understand why they can't keep quality consistently high? They obviously do know how to make great food but just don't. After 2 or 3 bad meals we won't be going back 😢
Famous Harry Ramsden fish & chips, Brighton branch a good 20yrs ago. On leaving to pay, the assistant asked if i enjoyed my meal. I replied, " now you've asked, i found the chips to be anemic, the peas were hard like bullets and there was more batter than fisn. The assistant turned to me and said " that will be £6.95p please. I paid and left. As nothing more was said.😅 I'm kicking myself to this day for paying.😅 Trouble is I'm not the type to complain. Fool that I am 😊
I could tell that batter was minging straight away. Yorkshire and Scotland for fish and chips. Anywhere else is rank especially Londongrad. Bradford is tops for curries and Leeds for owt else. However as a Yorkie I have to admit both Manchester and Liverpool are best for Chinese
Memories! When I was a lad on my birthday, I would get a new Leeds kit from Carters and then a trip to Mother Hubbards (Ingleby Road) ... I didn't realise then, that that was as good as it gets! and I'm referring to Leeds as well 🤣
Totally agree, better off finding a gem of an independent...which is probably how these places began. Went to Harry Ramsdens once and once only 20 years ago now. Says it all!
Haddock is a member of the cod family.A rule of thumb tò find where fish feed is where the mouth is. Bottom feeder mouth at the bottom.Mid Mouth middle feeder.Mouth at the top top feeder.
I've never seen a maggot in cod, but just today here locally (Pittsburgh Pa) someone found a tapeworm in their almost fully eaten, medium rare steak they bought from the grocery store.
Cod has less cholesterol and sodium than Haddock. Compared to Haddock, Cod has more polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, making it a wonderfully healthy option. So, if you want to make a choice based on nutrition, cod is the winner. A chippie running out of mush peas says it all... The whole thing looked awful. The gravy looked like it could be served in slices 😂😂😂
I personally prefer the taste of Haddock, always with mushy peas, always done the old traditional way, my favourite to this day was The Cypriana restaurant in Worksop, the Haddock was huge and ridiculously tasty, I think they're closed now or have been taken over but they were sublime back in the day.
I may stand corrected , this chain appears not to be in the Tourist areas of London, And their web site states that the fish is fresh from Icelantic waters.
Fish bites locally you get 7 for 3.50, its a white fish and they are superb..large chips 4.50 enough for 3..hence fish and chips for a fiver and delish
Not the best Lee, I agree the best ones are from small local fish n chip shops. Also seaside fish n chips usually good, not been myself but I hear there’s a good one in Whitley Bay which has won awards…maybe one for you to try 👍😀
Black specs over fish and chips, a sign of old unchanged oil, fish looked like probably factory processed, injected with phosphate/water to increase weight not good.
To put things in proportion a pint of beer in 1972 cost about 10p. My bus fare was 10p. That beer is now around £4.00, that bus fare is around £4.00 (or would be except for the cap) so that 45p would be nearer £17. And the price incereased in 1975/76 becasuse of he drought which reduced the potato crop.
Hi Lee A little late with this one,as always you're righr about the fish the oil wasn't hot enough, that why it was greasy, they say the oil has to be 350 degrees F after you put in the fish in not to be greasy,I saw your preview on eve's there's a guy from England rating different evs rating not good on most models I'll try to get his name he vlogs on reels and or shorts on Facebook and TH-cam later today take care
I used to work in a fish shop and we used to try and pick the worm things out before we cooked them but yes there is worms / maggots in cod. Love your vlogs lee are you going to be visiting darren john soo 😊
Go to Wetherby Whaler at Wakefield and have their Giant Hadddock , absolutely amazing hot fresh tasty and batter to die for, fabulous mushy peas, good chips Yorkshite Tea and actual butter not margarine on the bread, great service, decent prices a real treat ! (And I'm from Lancashire)
Very true about yorkshire fish and chip shops. Yiu might as well just have kebab takeaway just for kebab. Haddock is more tastier than cod. Fish chips lots of vinegar and bit of salt.
As someone who has an Ecology degree, a masters degree in Marine biology and more knowledgeably a fisherman, indeed both cod & haddock are bottom feeders, you name a fish you see on a menu in the UK and 90% plus are bottom feeders. The reason why = gravity 😅. More weird is a chippy out of mushy peas, followed by even weirder (bordering on dirty 😇) gravy with fish. As for that meal......that gravy was granules & hot water 50/50 absolutely disgusting. I think its time for a ban on plastic cutlery too now. Eat in, use metal, eat out use your own or wooden/cardboard. So much for a fish selling business using plastic 🙄🙄🙄
C - Mon Lee, isn't it time you introduced the world to a proper Yorkshire Fish Cake, Brilliant stuff, as an ex Sheffield resident I've been eating them since 1972, to some folk its a new Idea, lol Not in Yorkshire.
Everyone I know puts gravy on their fish.I think food is just personal to each person, when reviewing food you can become over critical but excellent content lee❤
Mother Hubbards is a franchise chain that’s popping up all over the place no pun intended. Have 2 in Birmingham. On that note Lee I challenge you to find a decent fish and chip shop in Birmingham
Haddock feed in the same areas as cod. They feed off the bottom when young but move up somewhat later like haddock they are predators feeding on invertebrates and smaller fish. They are not true bottom feeders like catfish or politicians. Yorkshire fish and chips is okish. What I’ve found up there is there is very little choice of fish. Here in Hastings where we still have a beach launched fishing fleet you can chose from cod, haddock, plaice, rock (gurnet or huss)and in some shops skate.
Lee that fish looked weird the batter reminded me of flattened chicken or turkey that had been roasted the gravy looked like wood glue too thick it’s a five from me.
A fish & chip shop should never have a fast food vibe, but unfortunately that place was absolutely swimming in it! Fish looked fine & I’m sure it would have been tasty, but the character of that place would just put me right off
Best Fish and Chips ive ever tasted is the Humber Fisheries, near BeachHomes in Cleethorpes. In my childhood I used to walk to the local chippie to get fish and chips twice and a fishcake and chips, cost less than £5 and change went in my money box.
That place looks like it's on the retail park they built on the site of what used to be the old Beechdale swimming baths. I used to be a regular in there when I lived in Nottingham. I have family that lives just up the road from there. I can't believe how much Nottingham has changed since I moved away!
I agree when they start franchises they are never the same the wife and I went to a papas in whitby .and were very disappointed with the service and the fish and chips .however we had made a booking for an other night at the magpie cafe where the fish and chip were excellent.
I totally get it Lee... I popped into my local chippy about a month ago at the end of July... I had taken my car down to my local garage for it's annual MOT... And decided that i would grab some Fish & Chips while i waited... Normally they're great Fish & Chips... But on this occasion they were bloody awful mate!... It was my first visit for a few months... And the things i had noticed... I didn't like one little bit... Firstly their price had risen by sixty pence... But the Fish & Chips were really awful... Both of the Fish & Chips were really really greasy... And they had absolutely no taste whatsoever... In fact if it hadn't been for a good Curry Sauce... I wouldn't have finished them at all mate... From now on i'm going to use the other chippy that's half a mile further down the road... It put me right off pal... I could tell that this one was going to be a bit dodgy as soon as they stated that they were all out of Mushy Peas... Really!... A chippy without Mushy Peas... Have they never heard of a Cash & Carry or a Supermarket?... I'll score this a 3/10... The amount of food you left... Told the whole story here Lee... Many thanks for the review... All the best... Cheers mate. 🍺
As someone from yorkshire i’d never dream of going to a chippy that served anything else but fish and chips.. a bread cake ( or what ever people call it) is deemed a fancy extra

My wife wants to know why you pull it apart with your hands and then complain about having greasy mitts!!!
Should not be too greasy. Sign of oil not being hot enough.
Didn't know that
@@TheMacMaster yes that can be the case - though of course if it’s too hot you’ll burn the batter and not cook the fish! Cheers. Lee.
If you have a super sized piece, it will drop the temp of the oil. It’s a difficult balance to achieve with the bigger cuts.

A chippie running out of mush peas says it all... The whole thing looked awful. The gravy looked like it could be served in slices 😂😂😂
Does fat and cholesterol matter when it is cooked in highly saturated beef fat? I do like cod better though.
When I was a child you get buy a bag of scratchings which were bit of batter leftovers they were really cheap
Can't see why gravy would be a problem when you are having the whole meal cooked in Beef dripping any way. ????
Love the mother Hubbards in Scarborough ❤
Lee, whenever you say “I’ll reserve judgement until later”, it’s not usually good news.
I miss fish bits .it was only bits of batter no fish.but our local chippy on the 70s gave you a little bag with 4or5 chips in it
I personally prefer the taste of Haddock, always with mushy peas, always done the old traditional way, my favourite to this day was The Cypriana restaurant in Worksop, the Haddock was huge and ridiculously tasty, I think they're closed now or have been taken over but they were sublime back in the day.
Only been to Mother Hubbard in Blackpool. To be fair one of the better fish and chip shops in Blackpool ( in my humble opinion) 😀
Depends which branch you go to. The Mother Hubbards in Erdington, Birmingham and Leeds Road in Bradford are amazing.
Lol, the gravy has the same viscosity as the curry sauce🤦♂️
So much for a fish selling business using plastic
🙄🙄🙄
Bedders at Coventry Road, Yardley were legendary for decades. Not sure if it's still going.
@@hacendado3840 it’s still going with new owners but nowhere near the quality it was sad really
Thanks again for sharing
A fish & chip shop should never have a fast food vibe, but unfortunately that place was absolutely swimming in it!
Fish looked fine & I’m sure it would have been tasty, but the character of that place would just put me right off
Ya, that menu didnt give me a good vibe. Almost like a Denny's for fish and chips
The gravy is only for the chips Lee, it doesn't go on the fish, that's just weird. But chips and gravy is just awesome.
They don't do pork sausages 😮
I think you will find fish has worms in the flesh now and them.
Maggots are hatched from Fly Eggs.
A fish & chip place running out of peas? Not acceptable. That would be a deal breaker for me.
Wet = frozen
1969 bag of chips 6p
Used to have a mate in the 60s..his mum and dad ran the chippy so free for us😀
Old pence

how can a fish and chip shop run out of peas?
Watery fish…and no mushy peas!! what! unforgivable 2.3/10
No mushy peas? Old mother Hubbard, went to the cupboard . . . but . . .the cupboard was bare!
Looks good the gravy looks lovely😊
My favourite fish is haddock with chips and mushy peas or fishcakes chips and mushy peas
I’d say that fish was frozen or not properly defrosted when it was battered and went into the fryer
Running out of mushy peas reminded me of when you had the breakfast where they of out baked beans :-)
I had takeaway fish and chips last week they were anaemic, put them in the airfryer fot ten when I got home what a difference lovely they were.
Haddock is the bottom feeder
Haddock and Cod fish are both bottom feeders.
