  • Goat and sheep are reared mainly by the Chopans, Gujjars, Gaddies and Bakerwals.
There are various kinds of sheep and goat reared in the Himalayan region which have high demand due to wool production. Gurezi, Gaddi, Karnahi, Bakerwali, Poonchi etc. are few of them.
The Himalayan region is famous for Cashmere wool production.
Chopans are a specific community who have traditionally been involved in the business of sheep rearing. They are the professional herders of Kashmir who do not possess any herds of their own. They tend to the other people's sheep and roam around the mountains for several months for grazing activities before returning the sheeps down to their original owners.
