  • The air defense system MANTIS (Modular, Automatic and Network capable Targeting and Interception System) is a protective system against all kinds of air attacks. It is the last line of defense and destroys attacking weapons in close proximity with high effectiveness. It defends against missiles, artillery shells, and mortars (known as RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) targets), as well as aerial targets such as drones or cruise missiles. Here's how this superweapon works.

Phalanx is about 10 million per unit, mantis is 110 million per unit. Phalanx 6,000 yard range, mantis around 3,500 yard range. Phalanx 1,550 magazine, mantis 280 round magazine. Phalanx shell $30, mantis shell $undisclosed. Mantis seems to be a great system but unproven on the battlefield like the C-Ram. Germany usually always makes good systems though so I'm pretty sure it will perform. The Gepard performs well in battle.

@@philchristmas4071 You couldn't be more wrong. The German Bundeswehr bought TWO systems for 110 million. Each system includes 6 automatic guns, a control module and two sensor modules. So the Mantis system is actually cheaper. We also don't know the maximum firing range of the Mantis system, only the effective firing range, so it's only fair to compare apples to apples. Effective firing range mantis: 3000m, effective firing range Phalanx 1600m. On top of that, the Mantis system is more mobile and has a quicker and more accurate targeting system. But its not really a fair comparison, the Phalanx system is very old, it would be a shame if a brand new system could not beat a weapon system designed in 1969.

@@lukasweishaupt2708 You couldn't be more wrong. Ukraine just bought 2 skynex systems which is the gun mounted on a truck for 192 million dollars. I like the mantis and think it will perform well. My only concern is, the US did thousands of hours of testing with every different caliber. The one that always worked best was a wall of 20mm. Just watch C-Rams performance in battlefield conditions, vyou never see Rheinmetall putting out videos of testing even close to combat conditions. We get one video of a swarm of drones sitting still. If it performs only a small percentage better than the Gepard it will be fantastic. I would like to know the price of rounds and why they want disclose this information. Remember, they quit using the Gepard because of high operating cost.

What’s funny is I’m willing to bet that there’s going to be or rather there is a large number of individuals who think that something like this is a step backwards. After all, I like to think of this is being kind of like how following the Korean war, many nations Became highly dependent on missiles for their aircraft, and in some cases even ground defense. However, as it has been shown, anti-air defense from the ground can be difficult even with missiles. So having weapons systems like this and others like it, I feel is a good thing. After all with the proliferation of small unmanned drones in recent years systems, like this would be highly useful. Not to mention if the system is small enough, it could be much more easily transported rather than having a big heavy missile platform.

A Mantis system consists of 6 guns, they all can fire at different targets simultaneously with up to 1000 rounds per minute. Each round contains 152 tungsten projectiles, so each burst releases 5472 projectiles into the air. So good luck with 51 drones. You would need over 1000 drones to overwhelm a weapon system like this.

And what about this? If you have to wait a few years for a pair of tanks from Germany, what will be the speed of production of something like this? The truth is that Germany alone is not able to produce equipment at the rate that Korea or the USA do. Therefore, the biggest mistake was the lack of willingness to cooperate on a large scale with Poland and the Czech Republic Poland and the Czech Republic have shown that their industry is able to modernize and produce the most complicated things. Example Leopard 2PL Poland practically has to dismantle the entire tank, replace about 40% of the parts and rework the tank's turrets, additionally, at the same time, it repairs Ukrainian tanks. So does the Czech Republic, which modernizes the T 72 and a lot of vehicles for Ukraine non-stop. In addition, the Czech Army began to complain that Czech post-Soviet tanks were in better condition than Leopard 2A4s. Similarly, the Norwegian military is not happy with the political choice of the new Leopard 2s, because the K2 was often better in tests, cheaper, susceptible to major modifications, and the delivery of tanks was faster. This just proves how wrong Germany's policy was between 2000 and 2022.
