    How can you tell the silver and gold based gene in white chickens? This helps with that process and also helps determine roosters at a very early stage.

    ABOUT US
    We are Bill and Rebecca and this is Birch Moon Farm. A simple living homestead/farmstead where we try to practice a simply sustainable lifestyle. In 2015 we purchased 5+ acres in the Vermont hills and for the first 18 months lived in a 250 sq ft RV, while we built our own house (with lots of help from amazing friends and family), 3 sheds, a driveway, water well, septic, 2 chicken coops.
    So what made us do all this in our late 40's early 50's? Well, in 2013 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and mostly everything that goes with that type of diagnosis. And this all happened 6 months after our wedding. So after about 10 months of treatments, a couple of surgeries, chemo and radiation, we had had enough. We no longer subscribed to what people call the "American Dream". And we didn't want to wait until we were in our late 60's to live our dream. So we sold or gave away everything we owned, and took all our assets and started to live our dream where we would try to be as self sufficient as possible. Do we always succeed? Nope! But we try! And in the end, isn't that all that matters?
    Birch Moon Farm is now home to 2 humans, 2 cats, one dog and lots of silkie chickens! Follow along with us while we build our homestead one project at a time.

    Hey there, beautiful birds you're getting started with. I have stumbled around trying to learn some basic genetics as well lol, and had the silver/gold down except, for that fact you shared about the mixed silver and gold being boys, so thanks so much for that info!
    As for identifying them, you could use yellow and white zipties?

      Thank you and you are welcome! It took me at least a year before I realized I needed to start with good stock. Otherwise I would just spend years just to get to that point. LOLOL Yeah, the genetics are SO interesting but not for the faint of heart. :) I have had leg bands before that have caused injuries so really hesitant to use them again. But thank you for the tip!

    I have a white silkie rooster, and my hens are a mixed flock, Rhode Island reds, golden laced wyandottes, Sussex, Austrolorps, and golden bantams. We haven’t hatched any yet since it’s winter but I can’t wait to hatch some! I’m really excited because I have no idea how the chicks will turn out. Really hoping we get a beautiful colorful bunch with unique patterns. Any idea how they could possibly come out?

Had everything that I needed at One time and didn't even know it, The best hens and the best roosters , I gave them away, after I returned to work, I thought I wouldn't have time for them. Thought they would be better off. Could of kicked my self 😪 They let them get killed. So This Time I will appreciate what I have, I will knowing what I have. You are helping more than you know. We have 10 silkies. We live in a community that does not allow yard chickens. Don't know why my husband thought we could have 10 silkies in the house. But that being said we have the silkies. They were all together when they were chicks. Right now we have 6 in the garage and 4 in the house. They are approximately 9-10 weeks old. We know we have one rooster because he has tried to crow twice. They are separated because the 4 in the house were being picked on by one of the others. The rooster is in the house group. After all that info, my question is how do we find homes for those we want to give away? We live in Southeast North Carolina. Thanks for any ideas you can give us.

    • @birchmoonfarm101
      @birchmoonfarm101  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! That iis too bad you cant have them. And its kinda funny, you must have a very sweet husband. There are chicken/farm facebook groups that swap roosters all the time. Try to find some local to you. Craigslist can also be a resource :) Can I also make a suggestion? When you have a bully, you want to seperate them by themselves for 1-2 weeks if you know who is doing it. When you seperate them and put them back with the flock, they will have a different position in the flock and that can most of the time solve the bullying.

    Is it possible for small crested birds to produce a few large crested birds?

    • @birchmoonfarm101
      @birchmoonfarm101  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on their genetics, but normally breeders try to improve the next generation by cutting out undesirable traits as much as they can. But! If that is all you have, you can test by hatching and see what happens. Then keep any that have larger crests. The hope is that at least one parent has the desirable trait and passes it along to the chicks. Hope that helps! Google "Line Breeding". It describes how to breed to get the best traits from birds.

    Hello I'm wondering if you could help me with a question.I'm getting some chicks that are probably not going to be the big fluffy ones that or SOP in spring. What color can I use to improve my flock?
    White
    Buff
    Or Black?
    I also have blue and splash.
    But I just don't know what to cross with.Thanks!

      If it was me, keep white’s with whites , and buffs with buffs. You can put blue black and splash together. Google each colors breeding charts, those help immensely and usually tell why. Good luck!

    I have buff silkie roosters, 2 white hens and 4 buff hens. I’m up to 19 chicks hatched so far. The chicks range in color from light yellow, silver, grey, tan, and bronze. So strange how I got so many colors of chicks from 2 different colored parents. Maybe they will grow out of their hatchling colors, their parents when they were chicks were only tan and white.

    Hi! I am also aware of the gold and silver based white BUT apparently there is also another type of white! A double silver. Which is also less desirable as gold based but if bred to gold then you should just get silver based. I am really not sure it’s so interesting! Are your chocolates sex linked or dun?

    • @birchmoonfarm101
      @birchmoonfarm101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Of course I went on a hunt for double silver on Google and discovered I might not have clearly stated it in this video. 🙂 But the chick that shows silver has two silver genes. So I believe that is what you have heard about double silver genes. The gold has two gold genes, so no silver gene and the mixed has one silver and one gold. I would love to hear more if I am misunderstanding your comment.

      @@birchmoonfarm101 this is what I read from a very respectable breeder. I may also be misunderstanding it but oh well here it is :
      Ok so let's talk about; White
      Silkies - Gold Gene - Silver Gene - Double Silver Gene.
      Remember this is just my opinion base on my experience breeding. Every one else may have different views and please feel free to add to the post.
      So first, most of you who know me knows dont 100% agree with genetics, I'm more of a visual breeder. But sometimes they are important.
      Let's start with Double Silver, it's probably the most complicated and the least understood. I will admit I don't know much about it scientifically but I will give what I know. I first want to say I dont think it a silver gene, but here's what i know from my breeding.
      Double Silver to Double Silver produces more Double Silver. Now Double Silver is a dirty white , usually shows on the males in the cushion area, and yes even females will show the Double Silver. I've had it to show up in the crest and neck but also thought out the whole body. So if you use the Double Silver in your breeding I recommend you mainly breed to the Gold Gene. This seems to cut it and you get more of the regular Silver Gene. Breeding to the Silver Gene you will get both but definitely premot the Double Silver Gene.
      The Gold Gene carries a yellow or halo effect around the crest neck areas. It is more ressive type Gene that will cover other color Gene's. This is not desired, the more you breed Gold Gene to Gold Gene the stronger the gene becomes and the harder to breed out. The best breeding for the Gold Gene is to Silver or Double Silver.
      The Silver Gene, the most perfect breeding for whites. The Silver Gene is the purest of the white Gene's, clear, crisp and shiny. The best mating here is Silver to Silver. This will produce the purest of white, but may see some Double Silver. Also breeding to Gold Gene will produce some of both.

    • @birchmoonfarm101
      @birchmoonfarm101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you totally understand her and I would have too if I didnt have the genetics explained. I have no doubt that she is a respectable breeder with tons of experience and lots of what she says is so very interesting and makes me want to see what I get with two double silvers and the resulting coloring! What makes me give pause to what she says is that she admits to not understanding the science behind it and says she doesn't agree with genetics. So if she doesnt understand the genetics she is producing, how does she know what her results are? That part confuses me. Maybe she does know by the chicks? And I wish she mentioned what colors she means in regards to hen or rooster because that makes a difference. Gosh I would love to have a conversation with her and ask her tons of questions, to truly understand what she means on some of this.
