  • A new film from director David Fincher ("The Social Network") shines a light (in black-and-white) on the Golden Age Hollywood studio system, as screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz struggles to complete the screenplay for Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane." Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz (the grandson of Herman) talks with Fincher, and with actresses Amanda Seyfried and Lily Collins, about the story behind the making of a masterwork.

      I love it but it is not a real mainstream film and if it was in theatres it would not have made money.
      I would loved to have seen it in a theatre if it was shot on 35mm film and played in 35mm film.

    I found _Mank_ to be very entertaining, beautifully filmed, with more than its fair share of witty, fast-paced dialogue, some of which is inside stuff that will leave many modern viewers scratching their heads. Amanda Seyfried, an actress I'd never heard of, is especially compelling as Marion Davies. People should understand Fincher has made an entertainment, though, not a documentary - just as Welles did with _Citizen Kane,_ by the way. Take it as a wonderful character study and period piece, but don't take it as gospel.
    By the way - I just watched _Mank_ on Netflix last night (on my Roku). I never did any searches on the film or its subjects on my computer. How did TH-cam know to recommend a couple of videos about it today? This is not the first time I've noticed this - I watch something on Netflix, and soon after TH-cam promotes videos about it.

    I LOVE Fincher; however, please know he wished to bring his father's screenplay to life. His father based the story on Pauline Kael's bulls*** article filled with lies & info she solicited without giving credit!
    Pauline Horrible Kael made the world think that Welles did Jack crap with the script. It's beyond insulting. The best parts of Kane's character (the parts unlike Hearst) were fleshed out of Welles's contributions and edits.

    Most people who don't recognize or appreciate a film like "Citizen Kane" or other b&w classics is they have no appreciation or concept for individual shot composition, expressionistic moody lighting & cinematography, plot development, symbols and twists, or a non-linear narrative. Just give them a good ol' cowboys and Indians flick lol of which many are great entertainments also

    Greatest film ever? No. Charlie Chaplin films were better. My choice, “The Great Dictator” A very gutsy movie subject that the studios wouldn’t touch. Cowards all.👀👈

    • @TheRealLaughingGravy
      @TheRealLaughingGravy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Chaplain was certainly an influential filmmaker during his time, but I wouldn't say any of his films were "great." He overloaded them (like _The Great Dictator_ ) with pathos the way I slather whipped cream on my pumpkin pie, and his humor has not aged well (the way, say, Buster Keaton's and Laurel & Hardy's have). His body of work is important to movie history, but he didn't make any movie that approaches _Citizen Kane_ for "greatness."

    • @scottmoore1614
      @scottmoore1614 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chaplin was a genius, no doubt about it. Although I love all his films, my personal favorite would have to be “City Lights”. I think it’s probably the greatest film ever made about love. “Modern Times” and “The Great Dictator” follow close behind.
      Incidentally, Orson Welles received a “story by” credit in Chaplin’s black comedy “Monsieur Verdoux”, another Chaplin masterpiece that is often overlooked.

    Thanks for ruining the movie (“Citizen Kane” not “Mank”) for me. My teacher had told me to wait until college to watch it and would not tell us the big surprise of the movie no matter how much we begged. Well, that big surprise is over. A million shots from the movie you could have shown in the first 15 seconds of this story and you use a shot that gives away the McGuffin. Jerks.
