What is great about the Weeknd is that his biggest songs are all about very dark subjects and most people who aren’t fans never even notice like Blinding Lights being about overdose, Can’t Feel My Face being about cocaine, The Hills being about him sleeping around and being an addict, Starboy being a song wondering why radio let his music become so big knowing how dark it is

@@poison1356 It definitely is controversial but its cause i'm not as big of some of the more poppy songs on there. I love songs like alone again, too late, escape from la, save your tears, repeat after me, after hours, and until i bleed, but I don't really like snowchild, heartless and blinding lights. Overall I love after hours and ranking it 7 doesn't really give justice to how great it is but I just prefer the darker sound from his previous albums
I can’t lie I feel Starboy should’ve been higher, bc with that album he proved that he was here to stay. He was at the point where all artists either test new sounds or stay safe and repeat the same sounds continuously. But with starboy he showed he’s a house hold name and him taking that risk is part of the reason we enjoy him. This is a small part that makes him The Weeknd.
You are wrong. What makes you think "all artists" were in the position of trying something new or "stay" repeating themselves? That's a HUGE generalization. Starboy contains a couple of songs of the best that the last decade gave but if you gonna talk about him showing to the world he was meant to stay, that sounds like Kissland all the way. That was his mainstream attempt
@@bryan1956 his mainstream attempt was definitely bbtm. That album was created for the radio. Kissland is still not one of the most highly rated albums from Weeknd by the media although it's definitely one of my favourites
Just cause he proved he was here to stay doesnt mean the quality was great, whilst yes I disagree that star boy is worse than my dear melancholy I can’t deny that it is bottom 3, which hurts because I use to love this album and defend it but it’s low key grew off me.
Unpopular opinion: I really think that MDM is his best project, because of the way that it was built and the real feelings that Abel placed there, he wasn't afraid of making a whole EP about his own relationships, and all the feelings and chills that MDM makes me feel... It is amazing.
Kiss Land is most definitely his best album. Whether sonically, lyrically, thematically, visually, the quality of this album is undefeated. There’s so many layers to it and the Japanese influence and aesthetic is amazing. And he took his original sound a step further production-wise. Not a mainstream project but definitely his best. House of Balloons is a close second for me.
@@deeroybeatz Great. I feel like BBTM is high level. The production, the atmosphere, lyrics and confidence boasted throughout the project, the strong beginnings and ends. This project tends to be underrated by fans but i think it captured weekend best cohesive work aside of Dawn Fm and House of Ballons
@@bolyd.3856 absolutely i agree with you. It’s a great album. I actually love BBTM, its just that this was the beginning of “pop” abel which is the reason I rank it at the bottom. I do think there is still elements of his original sound in BBTM, but i am not a big fan of the commercial route he went with his music, but I do understand why he did it. I can’t help but feel that he is limiting himself considering the fact that his first 4 projects were so innovative, and fresh to us, and he has for the most part left that sound behind. The only reason I rank MDM and After Hours ahead of BBTM is because his original sound seems a little more prominent in those projects. But they’re all great.
Just saw The Weeknd in DC this past weekend and take my breath / sacrifice sounded so good live. I believe Dawn FM was meant to be heard at a concert but nothing touches those first three mixtapes.

Even though Trilogy is more my taste musically, I’ve been really enjoying his last two albums because they are easier to connect to emotionally, which I really like in music. As good as Trilogy and Kiss Land are, they are not easy to relate to, because he can come off as very unlikable. But the stories on Dawn FM (and After Hours to an extent) are much easier to empathize with.

Thursday Favorite Track - The Birds, Pt. 2 9.) My Dear Melancholy, Favorite Track - Privilege After Hours easily takes the crown for me. The rollout was so full of hype and was so exciting. The aesthetic for the era is so kickass. The sinister Las Vegas grunge with that iconic ass red suit, his hairstyle, those glasses he wore. I hate using that word, iconic, but that’s exactly what the look was. You know instantly who it is and what is being represented when you see that flashy red suit. I love it even though Abel was tired of wearing it by the end of the era lol. The album tells a story from start to finish. Starts with him ending up Alone Again, then goes in his usual nightly escapades of drugs and sex, he ends up overdosing, and the album ends with him bleeding out, or dying, which is where Dawn FM picks up, with him in purgatory transitioning into the after life. After Hours is such a versatile record. You have mainstream pop tunes like Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears, but you also get some “rap” or “trap” sounding songs like Snowchild, Heartless, and Escape From LA. He experimented with drum and bass on Hardest To Love. Scared to Live is the album’s breakup/love song ballad, and then you have tracks like After Hours, Faith, Repeat After Me, Alone Again, and Until I Bleed out that really dig into the self loathing and depression that Abel was feeling. The entire album is an amalgamation of everything Abel has created up to that point. It is, dare I say it, a perfect album, and the only one to top House of Balloons for me. House of Balloons was my favorite project from him until After Hours. HoB is a very hard project to be better than but AH did that for me. I miss that era deeply. Dawn FM is fantastic but After Hours was on another level. It’s crazy that critics took to Dawn FM more than they did AH.

Kissland will always have my ear for a listen at least every day I can put that album on repeat and it never disappoints. Also hearing Kissland in person at his kissland tour in 2013 was amazing
My rating (not like anyone cares worst to best in my opinion) Dawn FM, Echoes Of Silence, Thursday, House Of Balloons, Trilogy (I know it’s the past 3 with extra that is why I put it here), Starboy, My Dear Melancholy, After Hours, and finally my favorite Beauty Behind The Madness
His foresight at 21 is insane. When the trilogy mixtapes were fresh i didn't grasp the concepts right away but when I did it made the music 20x better. A true artist

1. After Hours (Most well rounded Weeknd project by far) 2. House of Balloons (Best production out of all 3 mixtapes) 3. Echoes of Silence (Best singing out of all 3 mixtapes) 4. Beauty Behind the Madness (Best hits and a great era in music) 5. Kissland (Amazing production, some tracks are too stretched out imo) 6. My Dear Melancholy (Too short but some of his best singing no doubt) 7. Dawn FM (Not his best but amazing track list, feels like an AFTER HOURS B-Sides) 8. Thursday ( Having it this low doesn't feel right, I might be sleeping on it) 9. Starboy (Too much filler, Reminder go hard tho)
I understand why people don't like starboy as much but it has some of his biggest and best hits to date with reminder, secrets, I feel it coming, starboy, party monster (super underrated), and die for you, cmon it was good to great album
The Weeknd is one of those artists where he switches up his sound every album and never seems to miss. I haven't listened to every project in his discography but I've listened to all of his studio albums and they all hit
For me it’s too hard to rank them without doing tiers. Some of them are so close together imo. S: HOB, EOS, Kissland, After hours A: Thursday, BBTM, MDM B: Starboy, Dawn Fm ALL OF THESE ALBUMS ARE AMAZING. B TIER IS STILL REALLY GOOD FOR ME. I don’t want people thinking I dislike any of these.
Just FYI, the reason none of the songs on Echoes of Silence had more than 200,000 streams on Spotify as you said was because you were streaming the original mixtape, not Trilogy, If you look at the Trilogy streaming numbers for EoS, every song is over 30 million, with D.D. almost at 100 million
My ranking, with my favourite two songs from each project... 1. After Hours (After Hours, In Your Eyes) 2. Kiss Land (Kiss Land, The Town) 3. House of Balloons (HoB/GTG, Wicked Games) 4. Dawn FM (Out of Time, Less Than Zero) 5. Thursday (The Zone, Rolling Stone) 6. Echoes of Silence (Initiation, D.D) 7. My Dear Melancholy (Wasted Times, Hurt You) 8. Starboy (Starboy, Sidewalks) 9. Beauty Behind The Madness (The Hills, Prisoner)

Special mentions: House of Balloons Starboy (not all the songs, maybe only Sidewalks, Starboy, Die for You and Reminder)
My favorite from The Weeknd is actually My Dear Melancholy. I adore all of his projects. But when I listened to My Dear Melancholy in 2018, it made me into a super fan of The Weeknd. It’s his most cohesive album as there’s 7 songs and you get to know everything about The Weeknd sonically and lyrically. Plus, back in 2018, I got cheated on by my ex-girlfriend and this album helped me deal with the heartbreak as I relate to how he was feeling about his heartbreak. After Hours number 7’s pretty controversial. Are you not a big fan of poppy Weeknd?
@@poison1356 It definitely is controversial but its cause i'm not as big of some of the more poppy songs on there. I love songs like alone again, too late, escape from la, save your tears, repeat after me, after hours, and until i bleed, but I don't really like snowchild, heartless and blinding lights. Overall I love after hours and ranking it 7 doesn't really give justice to how great it is but I just prefer the darker sound from his previous albums

Sorry man but after hours is unbelievably overrated
Dawn FM BY FAR my favorite album of his. Never gotten into a full album by him until that. Star boy 2nd best.
Dawn FM was a moment we won’t forget! What makes Starboy rank high for you?👀
I can’t lie I feel Starboy should’ve been higher, bc with that album he proved that he was here to stay. He was at the point where all artists either test new sounds or stay safe and repeat the same sounds continuously. But with starboy he showed he’s a house hold name and him taking that risk is part of the reason we enjoy him. This is a small part that makes him The Weeknd.
What’s up Mason! Starboy was definitely a huge achievement but which albums would you put it over?👀
You are wrong.
Starboy was super catchy. Every song was catchy, and at least 10 of these songs are some of his best songs to perform.
Just cause he proved he was here to stay doesnt mean the quality was great, whilst yes I disagree that star boy is worse than my dear melancholy I can’t deny that it is bottom 3, which hurts because I use to love this album and defend it but it’s low key grew off me.
Unpopular opinion:
I really think that MDM is his best project, because of the way that it was built and the real feelings that Abel placed there, he wasn't afraid of making a whole EP about his own relationships, and all the feelings and chills that MDM makes me feel... It is amazing.
THANK U, the best comment so far 🥹
nobody talks enough about this masterpiece, is really underrated
Quality over quantity

@@deeroybeatz Dawn fm at 8 is wild

As good as Trilogy and Kiss Land are, they are not easy to relate to, because he can come off as very unlikable. After Hours easily takes the crown for me.

This album has his best songs like Try Me, Call Out My Name, Hurt You, I Was Never There, and Privilege. I still replay every song on this album.
