Great vid Nik... always wondered why it was called the Queensway when it was opened by the KING....and vice versa with the Wallasey tunnel.... opened by the queen and called the Kingsway....!?!?
Great video Nick. It would be worth a mention that the 2 large pyramid shaped brick buildings close to either end of the tunnels house the giant filters and ventilation pumps for ventilating the tunnels.
This brings back so many memories. I used to travel from Prenton Road West (TRFC fan plaza), where I lived in the early 80s, working at Walmsley's, Netherton, Liverpool, for over five years. Great times. I had been on a winter weekend exercise with the Royal Marine reserves in Wales, cold and little sleep as you'd expect. I travelled through the tunnel on my 50cc motorbike at about 5.15 am the Monday morning to work and was bolloxed, so bolloxed I dozed off on my bike, and the middle ridges of the centre lane brought me to my senses; quite an experience at the time for an idiot 18-year-old. The Tunnel Bus was an adventure after the clubs closed in Liverpool, for those who know will understand how we got back to Birkenhead in the 80s! I used to get pissed up at the Alt and a few beers and doobies at my mates after the early shift with the lads, always had me piss before driving home (?), always felt ok approaching the tunnel, and every time I, I would be dying for a piss halfway through cause the traffic was so slow. Then you had to pay; I threw my cash in and dived to the nearest opening! Apologies, but this video has brought back many memories and the Tranmere fan plaza. I emigrated many years ago, and I miss Goodison Park, so thank you for the updates!
Decent video lad. My grandmother was a cleaner in the old tunnel. At night there would a large group of women with thick white overalls and Wellington boots with long handled mops to clean the insides of the tunnel sides.
An excellent and informative short film, Nick. Well-paced, imaginatively shot, carefully and inventively edited all with appropriate music and a very nicely delivered voice-over commentary. Thank you very much for the guided trip.
Great work Nick. Didn't expect you would mention the old Birkenhead dock exit and the traffic lights that I remember from the 1960s, so all the more impressed. Drone shots of the Birkenhead entrance also allowed to show my American son where his great-grandfather lived as a boy in Hamilton Square. Love your work from Anfield and Bramley Moor Dock, but please also keep doing your pieces from the Wirral.
Wow Nick, absolutely stunning, lots of solid and useful information. Also the clarity of the video is also stunning, keep up the good work, about time somebody did something to showcase our amazing city and the area we live in Thanks Stephen
Been through there many times. Nice to hear more about the history of it. I've lived in Canada for over 20 years now but I love the number of videos about local landmarks that exist now. God bless TH-cam. Nice job mate!
Can we have more amazing videos like this please really appreciate and just great. So sad to hear about Bill Kenwright what a man I’am a red but what a wonderful person so sad 😭 he did so much for the City .He did so much for different charities didn’t want any fuss .Just had to mention that. All good what you are doing.💙💙💙💙💙💙💙❤️❤️❤️❤️🧡❤️
Very good video mate and as a ‘Tunnel Tour’ guide your information was very accurate. If you haven’t done it already you should book on for a ‘Tunnel Tour’ I think you would enjoy it.
Exceptional footage and historical guide. Loved your Park gate to the Mersey video, too. I'm from Merseyside, but the wirral is my playground, my respite. I love Park Gate inparticlar. TFS. Excellent.
Hi Nick, I have followed your vids for a couple of years now, mainly Liverpool's Anfield road stand. Just wanted to thank you for your efforts, I grew up on the Wirral in Eastham and your vids have been fascinating. I live in Devon now and it's been great to follow progress of the stand and get a feeling for the area again. So many thanks and if you find the time an Eastham vid would be fantastic. Many thanks and best wishes. Graham.
Enjoyed that Nick. Always surprises me that the Liverpool side changes direction so many times that it actually ended up in Birkenhead at all. Love to know why is was so winding when the Kingsway is basically straightlined.
Excellent video Nick. If ever you get a chance one day could you do a video of the Liver Building. Loads of history there. The Liverpool to Manchester canal is another and of course the railways starting at Lime Street. Thanks Nick.
Thks that qas great . I have been through many times . It qas a true wonder at that time . Imagine taking all the rubble out by hand and horse and cart . Very professional.
Passed my driving test in Wrexham on a Thursday and went under that tunnel to watch Liverpool on the next Saturday. First I end up blocking up a fast track and then on the exit I got beeped on the roundabout😂😂😂 much prefer the kingsway tunnel now
Very good but you missed the opportunity to include footage of both dock entrances & zoom in on an original toll booth on the Liverpool side between the roundabout & the entrance.
I saw a double decker bus in the inside lane with the side of it's roof stuck on the side of the tunnel, after that there were signs when going to birkenhead saying no buses. When going past traffic stuck in the tunnel I counted 20 buses in the queue
My great grandmother (born 1901) told me about this. She used the words "king george the fifth". By the way, her first job on leaving school, was washing bandages for re-use during "the great war".
The lights now run in the center of the roof. When I was little, 50 years ago, they were on each side. I used to look out of the window and try to count them unsuccessfully.
I'm sure there's still a drilling rig under the tunnel somewhere, I was told they started drilling from either side and one went deeper to allow the other rig to carry on out the tunnel as they had no reverse gear? Don't know if that's 100% true.
And before any of you accuse me of being racist etc, look it up, Brick up the Mersey tunnel by Dave Kirby and Nicky Allt, all good fun, Nicky Allt is a personal friend of mine :)
A *big* problem is that it pours unwanted traffic into Liverpool's city centre. It should be converted to a Merseyrail metro tunnel, improving connections on both sides of the river. Cars can use the Kingsway tunnel, as that can take all the traffic. Also, less people will use cars of the metro links are excellent. This tunnel has two exit/entrances on each side of the river, so making it easy to get to districts not served by metro rail. It is wide enough for four rail tracks. Mainline trains could also enter Liverpool through the tunnel. The line to Crewe to Birkenhead via Chester is almost a straight line. No need to run over Runcorn rail bridge. The days of car is king are over. Then a few of the exhaust extration stations can be removed.
@@alanwllms5172 Best to understand what I wrote. You are no out of the box thinker for sure. The idea is to move lots of people quickly to as many districts as possible. Using that road tunnel does that. Sluicing traffic directly into Liverpool's centre in this day is not the right thing to do or many reasons. It gives congestion and pollution where it is not wanted. It may have been OK 100 years ago, when it was being planned, but not now. We need to get people out of cars, not encourage it. We have to move on and re-purpose infrastructure.
Nick that was fantastic, seeing both sides of the river from a completely different perspective, thank you.

Very interesting. I didn't know about the traffic lights in the tunnel before! It was interesting to see the drone footage.

Superbly constructed video. Thanks. Looking forward to the Kingsway when you have time.

Great Video,My wife’s grandad was one of only 5 men to start the tunnel and finish the construction.
A lovely video Nick - Cheers
Wow great video mate👍
Great video, Back in the 70’s we called the tunnel “the pipe”
Great Vid. The Mersey Railway tunnel predates both road tunnels though.
1880s i reckon without googling 👍
Nick you are the david attenboro of geography!spot on that!
Calm down everyone he said its first road tunnel
Really enjoyed this thank you

Thanks Nick a very good education video I knew about the tunnel but not the history of it. Have you thought about the Wallasey tunnel history
Technically northern first tunnel... as the train tunnel was 1st! 😉 but, first road tunnel certainly! 👌🏼
Interesting. Thanks.
Recomend the Tunnel Tour.Did it last year.£8..bargain..good vid mate.
Very good but you missed the opportunity to include footage of both dock entrances & zoom in on an original toll booth on the Liverpool side between the roundabout & the entrance.
I've noticed that often these tunnels are close to large tidal rivers. Then I wondered if they have always been used for road traffic purposes?
Loved this nick a s a scouser who retired to Thailand this is sentimental. What is that green building near to the pub you go to before the match?
Your down road I'm from never seen inside the old tunnel u go in? But ya brew next time in Birkenhead used to mainly watching bm
Only the 8th wonder of the world?
You could've gone half a mile up the road and filmed the Pyramids 😂.
I joke, good vid.
I saw a double decker bus in the inside lane with the side of it's roof stuck on the side of the tunnel, after that there were signs when going to birkenhead saying no buses. When going past traffic stuck in the tunnel I counted 20 buses in the queue
Was disappointed you didn't fly your drone thru tunnel 🤪
They've already done that in quite a few big Films. Try Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 1. It's used there.
My great grandmother (born 1901) told me about this. She used the words "king george the fifth".

RIP Michael Jones and Bill Kenwright.
I still refer to the tunnels as the New Tunnel or Old Tunnel.
Nick the train was the first tunnel
Yes, 50 years before it.
Brick up the mersey tunnel, keep you foriegners from Wales and The Wirral away ;)
And before any of you accuse me of being racist etc, look it up, Brick up the Mersey tunnel by Dave Kirby and Nicky Allt, all good fun, Nicky Allt is a personal friend of mine :)
Nick is was not the 1st tunnel the mersey railway tunnel was
