Hey Gary thanks so much for sharing - nice way to audition them playing the same thing back to back like that. Really interesting results for me - I’m listening to it out of my phone speaker and to me, the Boss ones actually sounded the richest and fullest, which I didn’t expect at all. The STL one, as much as I know they do some great stuff, sounded really thin and tinny to me. As I say, listening through a phone speaker so, bit of a limited perspective probably 😂
Thanks Sam hope you're well. They're all great in their own way, and it probably wasn't fair to put STL through these paces as the Fender stuff is almost like an afterthought in their artillery. If it was a hard rock demo it'd probably come out in the top 2. Anyway, I'm sticking with Gtr Rig 6 (which is what I used on the album you mixed for me) and STL for the heavier drop D stuff I'm working on just now 🤘
I really enjoy you and your channel. Have you experimented with using the GT-1 pedal to use as a foot controller for software amp sims? Can it be done? 🤘🤓
Thanks for the kind words Timothy. I've never looked into that tbh. I don't think it's part of this unit's capabilities but I could be wrong. Let me know if you get it to work like that! 👍
@@garyjohnstonemusichello Gary! Nope it won’t work, I actually scored a GT1 with a 2 button switch and power supply for 119$ 😮 it’s as good as new. I will enjoy your tips as well. I use a program called S-Gear for my computer, but really would love to scale back on the computer and focus for the new year on learning songs!!
The Boss GT-1 won this one for me, and I would not hesetate to use it in a mix. Guitarists put WAY to much time and money into the tone, thinking that people actually care...
You know what man, since I posted this video it turns out I agree with you, albeit I'm using the GT100 for recording now simply because the interface is easier for quick editing. Despite daw based sims being great for making changes in post, I find myself being way more productive by just getting that basic sound down in pre and adding only mod FX in post. Let's face it, most of us only use 2 or 3 basic drive sounds anyway. Might as commit to them going in. Saves CPU aswell. Let me know your thoughts.
@@garyjohnstonemusic Yep, listening on a 4-way Dynaudio mastering system, a Bose bluetooth speaker (my consumer grade reference) and a Neumann NDH30 headset, I still come to the same conclution almost a year later. Some of the amp sims sound congested, some of them to mid scooped and some of them to "hard" while the GT-1 sound just about right. The GT-1 was the only one that nailed the mids. Getting it right at the source, before it is recorded is what counts. Both for working faster and also for the quality of the finished product (those things are usually related IMO).
@@EirikHasselberg It's affirming to hear someone else agree. We can be so easily swayed by marketing with these plug ins and the adverts, especially if a successful musician's name is attached but as producers the name of the game is literally being productive. Anything that gets in the way of that is dead weight, or more importantly an unnecessary expense, monthly in the case of some of these products. Keep on man, will check out your stuff 👍
I also master a lot + I play drums and bass so I get more of a birds eye view on songs. That makes it a lot easier to say when enough is enough to the tone chasing guitarist. 😂
great video bro! I would love to see more of these comparisons

@@EirikHasselberg Yeh in the past I've had many a heated debate with your type 😜 Experience has taught me you were right all along
