Curly hair is actually better for this type of style. I have wavy hair and my mum has full on curly hair. Buns stay in place on her far better than they do in mine. We too have a similar hair style with sticks/pins, so yeah.

I'm French with no Asian roots whatsoever, and I did this a lot when I was younger. I'm a man but my mother insisted I keep my hair in the middle of my back, so I did this a lot with wooden chopsticks I used specifically for that (I hated hair bands and scrunchies). I cut my hair behind my mother's back when I was 16, and while I feel a lot better with short hair I do miss this particular hairstyle, it's so nostalgic to me PS: I just want to specify I didn't grow up in a religious sect, and we don't have anything in our culture that prevents boys from cutting their hair short. These were just my mother's preferences, as she wished she had a girl. When I cut my hair off she told me I was crazy and started focusing on my little sister's hair (she was 7 when I cut my hair)

Try practice with a pen , stick or a chopstick first I use to do it with a pen 😅when I was young

That thing is call kanzashi. Not kanzachi. Zashi (or sashi) means to poke. So you’re poking that stick in to your hair to keep it in place.
