  • This video showcases a Millennium Falcon model I built a couple years ago using the Fine Molds 1/72 scale kit. I uploaded it to provide some insight and reference for those of you who might be building a Falcon for the SMA and SSM Falcon group builds (and anyone else who might want to tackle a Fine Molds Millennium Falcon model kit).
    Here I showcase the colors I used and how I did the battle damage. The main hull color is a 50/50 mixture of Testors Model Master FS 36622 Camouflage Gray and Testors Model Master FS 36495 Light Gray. The slight tan panels are a mixture of MM Camo gray and FS 36440 Flat Gull Gray. BTW, before you apply a wash to a basecoat, make sure to gloss coat the paint so that the wash doesn't spiderweb into the basecoat too bad (if all you are going for is simple accenting of recessed areas or edges of raised detail).
    Additional photos of this model can be found at:

    I’ve had my Falcon for about 5 years now. I can’t seem to muster up enough energy to start this project, but I enjoy seeing people such as yourself providing advice and help. I’m glad that you didn’t use the transfers that come with the kit, as they are totally the wrong colour and make the model look like a toy when completed.

    This is nicely done! I'm not far off painting my own FM falcon and yours is great for inspiration. I can't say enough for you giving the paint mixes you have used, most guys doing custom mixes seem unwilling to share that information. Thank you. Truly well done.

    I agree with you 100% mate; I was 9 when Star wars came out, and at 44 am still making Star Wars kits, after a 20 year hiatus from model-making. People forget how absolutely massive Star Wars was when it first came out!

    I saw a review of the MPC/AMT/ERTL Millennium Falcon kit and this is SO MUCH better. Prior to the Bandai releases, this WAS the best mass-market Millennium Falcon and it's really not bad if you want a TESB Falcon kit. Of course, now, you spend at least $240 to get this kit and that's before you even buy glue and paint for the thing!
    I don't know that Bandai would bother to retool to do a more accurate TESB Falcon at this point. The CG Falcon (TFA and later) are based on the body style of the original Star Wars model with the landing gear of the TESB model. I just don't know that enough modellers are that anal, especially when the kits are as expensive as they are now.
    I mean, yeah, getting a Masters Replica OR DeAgostini Falcon gets you a screen-accurate Millennium Falcon but those are investments and less collectibles!

    The paint on the model looks really good

    Many of the modelers I know who have built this seem to be in their late 30s (as I was when I built mine). But, I wouldn't be surprised if other modelers in their 50s were building them also. Main thing is, if Star Wars made an impact on you when it first came out, that is really the only criteria out there for wanting to do one as I see it. :)

    I'm building mine, (again). I'm 56 now, was 21 and working on real aircraft when the movie came out. Models are about as tough to build as fire bombing aircraft. lol

    How many people are building these in their later years. I'm 56 now and having a ball.

    @Jellyform Glad to hear it! And 30 hours sounds about right if you are taking your time to make sure everything is positioned properly. It probably took at least that as I tend to be pretty meticulous with this stuff and dropping a couple parts did NOT help matters. Painting it should be a lot of fun with the proper references. Just be aware you are only HALFWAY done now as the paint and weathering can take almost as long (if you mask and paint the panels). Don't rush it! :)

      +SHADOSTRYKR Thanks! I have been collecting the DeAgostini 32" Millennium Falcon parts, so hopefully I can achieve a similar result when I start work on it this summer (I have a years worth of parts stockpiled already).

    @Jellyform Well, when it arrives I think you will thoroughly enjoy building it. This is one of my most satisfying model builds ever and part of that is due to FineMolds' kit design. It is expensive, but worth every penny (or Yen) IMHO.

    Great job! building mine now. Wondering what base color did you use for the ship?

    @Robkizzy For me, what ultimately helped with the decision was I either had to start building it, or sell it. Well, I didn't want to sell it, so I started work. Once you get over the self inflicted hurtles and start it (and I had the same problem with mustering the energy), it builds up like pretty much any other FineMolds model and is mostly trouble free. There are just a "few" more parts to keep track of. ;)

    Hello after 24 hours of research I have a sort of rock the boat question. The 6 flat black circle on the hull top. All photos have the black radiating out from a central point. Shouldn't any discharge be swept directly aft like an exhaust pipe??? You are the go to you.

    Excellent. What’s the Japanese guy’s video and the Gunze equivalents since Testors MM camouflage gray is out of production?

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tamiya USN Insignia white spray is a very good equivalent. It is essentially camouflage gray with about 30% white added. Camo gray may be gone out of the Model Master enamel line, but it and light gray are still available as acrylics.

    Thank you very much sir. I will do the 1/72 scale as everyone else has, but first I'm going to grab a cheapy 1/144 just for fun. Do a "real world" look and park the two side by side. To spark conversation. Thank millions.

    My mixture is in the description for the video. It is a 50/50 mixture of Testors Model Master FS 36622 Camouflage Gray and Testors Model Master FS 36495 Light Gray (among the other colors I used for detail painting).

  • @JMChladek
    @JMChladek  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not that I've seen. I looked at many photos of the 32" Falcon and its 5' cousin and I saw no evidence of streaks following the flight path. While logically such buildup would make sense, just remember the original builders of the model didn't seem to always follow such wisdom (same goes with the smaller streaks all over the model, which go out radially from the center).

    How does this kit compare to the new Bandai kit?

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The FineMolds kit is based on the 32" Falcon from ESB. The Bandai kit is based on the 5 foot studio model from ANH. There are several shape differences, plus after the FM kit came out, the physical size of the Falcon was recalculated by Lucasfilm. So the Bandai kit is physically larger even though both models are listed as 1/72 scale.

  • @InBedGamer
    @InBedGamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you get so much detail?

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The kit already has a lot of detail built into it. Weathering techniques such as pre-shading (with the black base coat) light washes and drybrushing help to pop out that detail. The smaller a model gets, the more critical these weathering techniques can become since light and shadow don't react with details on the surface of a small model like they do on a big one.

    hey there, 2 years later, i finally got my kit. the reveal version. stupid question, why are people so secretive over the build of this model? i can't find much on the net for add ons or lights, and when i ask in modeling groups, everyone just ignores my question. is there a good source for aftermarket add ons?

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There wasn't much for add on done as I can recall except for a couple photoetch sets (I believe Paragrafix did one). a Voodoo effects light kit could probably work with it (not cheap though). I don't recall people being secretive about the kit so much, except perhaps they didn't want anyone to know if they messed up a $200 plus model. As for model groups with people who have worked on it, Starship Modeler is one and the Replica Prop Forum is another.

    • @allsmurfedup
      @allsmurfedup 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JMChladek thank you for the reply. I have actually found a good source for good add ons from shapeways.com

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only other thing I can add is build-wise, since this kit falls together so well, not much was needed for it aftermarket wise. Most I have seen added was the etch for the gear struts and etch grills for the solar collectors. Adding lights should be relatively easy, but I would practice adding lights to an easier model first before doing this one, because it is so expensive.

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, shape ways has some good stuff, such as the square E7 dish. But for the most part, the box stock kit is already pretty dang good.

    Not an accurate replication of the studio model. Too clean. FichtenFoo does a much better job with his Falcon. You should check him out.

    • @JMChladek
      @JMChladek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Randy Wise with all due respect you are seeing this under lighting that washes out a bit of the weathering. My intentions for this build were to make something that could double as a studio model, but it never will be because this is not a 32" or five foot long model, nor is it filmed under bright studio lights. So the colorings are a bit dialed back compared to those models. But, for normal room lighting, this model duplicates the appearance nicely. And I have had studio scale modelers and industry professionals unsolicited tell me that.
      Ultimately though, modeling is always a personal thing subject to interpretation. So I understand and respect that others may not agree with the approach I took. In the end, I am happy how this looks.
