Angelina wrote and recorded this when she was 12 years old. Her Shield is her family, and most notably her Grandma Mery, Her Mom Sara and her Uncle Mike. Surround her with Angels (her fans). The lyrics are amazing, especially for someone so young. I hope her Shield protects her for many years to come, and she will always be surrounded by Angels.

The only artist I am aware of doesn't sing for fame, money, or personal gain, but rather for the world. She sings to capture your attention and to bring healing to the world.

Written when she was 11 to 12, one line was prophetic -"Surround me with angels". We do surround her with love and support.

Roni, thanks for your reaction and commentary. “Shield” by Angelina Jordan was written by Axxe, Angelina Jordan, Frida Amundsen & Ronny Janssen. Angelina was 12 years old when this song was released. She said, in a interview, the song is about a strong love, that protects you. I believe the lyric, "forgive me for all that I am", demonstrates Angelina understands how much of a burden her career has placed on her family. Angelina is very humble and always places concerns for others over her concerns. Here is the list of her 12 originals to date.
"What is Life" first sung at age 11. We don't know how old she was when she wrote each song. Age presented is her age when she first sang it.
    "Oslo" age 11
    "Shield" age 12
"Million Miles" age 14 we know she wrote this one in the days after her maternal grandfather passed in 2019 when she was 13
    "7th Heaven" age 15
"Love Don't Let Me Go" age 17
"Now I'm the Fool" age 17
    "Fire and Rain" age 17
"It's All My Fault" age 17
    "Good in Goodbyes" age 17
    "Diamond" age 17
    "Our Time" age 17
Should include songs for which she was the first to sing
"I'm Still Holding Out for You" age 10 .... considered one of her best vocal performances by many
    "Song for A" age 12
"Above the Water" a EDM song released near her 14th birthday
"We're the Best" sung with RedOne at the FIFA Awards February 27, 2023
Angelina wrote new lyrics for two famous songs by Amy Winehouse, "Back to Black" and "Rehab" since it was inappropriate for a preteen to sing the original lyrics. For "Back to Black" Angelina wrote the new lyrics in the 24 hours prior to the recording, then needed just two takes.

Fabulous reaction Roni ! I want to thank you for continuing your Angelina Jordan journey. Your channel is so important to all her angels out there and as always, much watch for me on TH-cam. This song "Shield "is a wonderful song. She sang when she was 12 years old and helped write this beautiful song. Angelina being a very humble, sincere, compassionate, loving soul always has had people that have been very protective for her, especially her immediate family and also her recording company. Company Republic Records who are taking their time and introducing Angelina had her own speed into the global music marketplace. This song sounds like it should be on a soundtrack. It's that good and can you imagine she was only 12 years old singing such a deep deep song. I hope you have a fabulous day and a fabulous 2024 and keep posting my friend. You are so so much appreciated by all the angels all over the world. Sending much thanks and love from Canada always 👍🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️

Great reaction. Angelina is very aware of the toll that her career has had on her family. The message of this song is an acknowledgement and appreciation for the protection that her family provides as the "Shield" against the dangers and pitfalls of the music industry that she has chosen to be a part of. She feels deeply the burden she has placed on her family and is asking for their forgiveness even as she thanks them for the support and protection they provide. It is a remarkably mature understanding of her life and how it affects others around her. In one of her other originals "Million Miles" she uses the phrase "I'll never regret what I do" which is a response to her late grandfather who used to tell her that if she is following her heart an doing her best, that she should never regret it. Angelina is a remarkable storyteller who thinks and feels very deeply.

Agree with you 100%, Phil! What's really amazing to me is the depth of Angelina's understanding of her journey in life and professionally, even at such a young age. Also, the love and humility with which she approaches these lyrics, thanking her family for all they've done and sacrificed so she could fulfill her dream and, at the same time, asking them for forgiveness if this path she chose is sometimes a really hard one for all of them.
Thankfully, they all did such a wonderful job keeping her "shielded" from the dangers of falling into the music business grasp too soon and allowing her to live as normal a childhood as possible, putting emphasis in her studies and just having fun while pursuing her career.
All of this is a big part of Angelina's ability to transmit such deep emotions to the listener. Truly outstanding!

12 years!!!!! There are singers who after 40 years of career don't even come close to an original like this, I'm not talking about the voice and tone, which are absolutely unapproachable, but simply about the ability to write a song of this level. Thanks Roni, perfect reaction, have a good life..Massimo

I agree with all the other similar comments:
My interpretation of her saying "Forgive me for all that I am", is that her family made a lot of sacrifices in order for her to realize her dream. After she won Norway's Got Talent and her mother was asked what's next, she said (paraphrasing) "now she has done this show, she'll go back to a normal life". We know that didn't happen, because Angelina was going places and everyone else felt compelled to go along, regardless of what they might otherwise have planned.
Notice she says, "Forgive me for all that I am", not "for what I have done". She can be held responsible for the things that she has done, but not for who she is, if she is being true to herself. And yet, while no one else feels she needs forgiveness, she is keenly aware of the burden on her family because of who she is.

  • @rwlewko

I think the phrase "forgive me for all that I am" is Angelina's way of acknowledging the sacrifices her family has made for her dreams/goals! Part of the sacrifice was her family's move to California.
This piece shows the depth of her talent in writing and musical arrangement.

A paean to her family. Beautiful and humble, she is asking their forgiveness for her talent, the aspirations that go with that talent, because they are always, and I mean always, there for her. Angelina, unlike a lot of kids her age, knows how lucky she is to have the support of this wonderful family. This is her saying thanks.

A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. As usual, a vocal master piece.
Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on TH-cam. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz.
Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.
Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate.
At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website, angelinajordanofficial Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on TH-cam went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14. At age 9, Angelina recorded a music video covering the 1956 Jay Hawkin’s classic, “I Put a Spell On You”. The video begins by showing Angelina writing her “wishes” for how she wants to perform the song. Angelina has always created her own arrangements for her cover songs. At age 10 and just a week before her 11th birthday, Angelina recorded a demo of “I’m Still Holding Out for You”. Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a TH-cam video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. Many angels (fans) believe this is one of Angelina’s best performances. When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident. Also at age 11, Angelina recorded her “It’s Magic” album which has, at times, been in the top 10 best selling jazz albums. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed Frank Sinatra “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on TH-cam. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On TH-cam, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as Rusty Shackleford has put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her. During the pandemic, Angelina was often seen buying meals for the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one. Angelina had previously released, 3 other original songs: “What is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” In April 2021, her original “7th Heaven” was released. A jazzy, danceable, inspiring song. Angelina has posted numerous short performances on Tik Tok and Instagram. Angelina had concerts in Norway in July 2022. In December 2022, Angelina performed at the Asian American Awards in Los Angeles. On 2/27/23, Angelina performed at the FIFA Awards ceremony in Paris, France, with a viewing audience in the millions. On May 5th, 2023, Angelina released her original "Love Don't Let Me Go". On July 23th she released her orginal EP “Old Enough”.
Angelina perform Concert at the Music Hall in Portsmouth New Hampshire on Sept 22nd, 2023. It Was a great concert, who was not and could regret it, a big mistake. On 10/27/23 she released her new orginal singiel “Our Time”. In November 2023, she was presented as a debutante at Le Bal des débutantes in Paris. On 12/08/23 she released new Marry Christmas EP “Driving Home for Christmas”. On 12/10/23 she sing in Oslo at the Nobel Peace Prize Celebration - Unchained Melody tribute to 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi.

I think AJ's comment about "Forgive me for all that I am" is about her drive for music. Even as a child her band members affectionately called her "The Boss".... as she knew what she wanted out of a performance and politely directed them towards what she wanted. She has arranged all of the covers she has made even as a young child. In music she is incredibly advanced and driven for a perfection that she hears in her mind. She seems to have perfect pitch. That kind of drive and unadulterated talent can be exasperating to those around you as it does involve a certain sense of demand. Especially when you have this kind of musical drive at such a young age. It would be hard for your parents to swallow or even keep up with.
I think this song demonstrates that even at 12 AJ knew how much she owed her family for putting up with her drive towards what she wanted to achieve. Some people are born knowing what they want and need to do in life. AJ is one of these.
Another reactor on TH-cam compared her to someone who came out of the womb knowing how to race Formula 1 cars.

I see the look on your face when she sings of forgiveness. It all makes sense when you know that this is a 12 year old Angelina writing about her mother, who has been a real force in her life. And it's also important to remember that Angelina is 12 when she wrote and recorded this. Yeah, the lyrics are a little on the juvenile side. But what a powerful song. In the off-chance commenters missed this important aspect of “…forgive me for all that I am…” -
This was written just before Angelina and her family moved to LA. She is a profoundly empathetic deep thinker, and I think she was very cognizant of the disruption the move would be… at least for a while. Of course, when you realize that this move was In furtherance of her nascent singing career, you can see why she penned thes lyrics. This theme also runs through her song “7th Heaven.” As a matter of fact, Angelina’s original works have many thematic intersections with each other - just the kind of complexity I know you’re fascinated with.

😊 I translate it more as " You forgive me for all that I am ", less of a request, more of a nod to those who are her shield. But I'm not sure, I've also thought of it as a general request, for the future as well as at the time, when she was 12, maybe worried she may not always be what those in her shield are hoping for. More anxious, than reflective of the current moment. But man what a song from a kid, anyone really. Beautiful. The words for me, "Shadows they whisper, stare at my soul".

"Forgive me for all that I am". I feel this is addressed to her family, who have turned their lives inside out to accommodate Angelina's musical ability and gone to great lengths to protect her from the big bad world of the music business. She understands that others have done so much for her, and this song is her appreciation of that. Without them, her family and her 'Angels', she would be vulnerable and uncertain.

I can understand why that line "Forgive me for all that I am" bothers you. On the surface, you're right, you shouldn't have to apologize for who you are. After reading the lyrics, I get a little different interpretation...one of somebody who's grateful for others being there for them, being their rock, and perhaps a little guilt, knowing how much effort and work others do on their behalf. I personally don't accept help well....would prefer to suffer the weight of whatever it is rather than have my problems impose on others. So I can see feeling guilty in a sense for that. Ironically, I enjoy helping others, and don't feel they should feel that way. That doesn't really make sense...holding those differing views depending if you're giving vs receiving help. Maybe it's because so many of us prefer and/or are use to being the helper, the comforter, the protector....and it's just a very uncomfortable, even vulnerable feeling to have that shoe on the other foot.
Still not a huge fan of her, but this one I actually really like. That's for reacting to it and helping me from being stuck in my own musical rut.
PS: The "Street noise" isn't as loud or as distracting as you might think. I'd hardly notice it if you hadn't pointed it out. You're in LA...it's going to be loud. 🙂

Heeey Roni ! 🤗❣✨ Angelina was 11 or 12 when she wrote Shield. I've read she wrote it about her mom's protective relationship with her. I would imagine the "forgive me for all that I am" lyric has specific context about being a young teen while also having immeasurable talent, and the impact of all that on her family. I agree with you that she doesn't need to apologize for who she is, yet maybe being so young she was just starting to realize the impact each of us has on those around us. Dunno for sure. Regardless, yes, this song is powerful and emotional and has a jazzy, james bond-ish style to it that is simply fantastic. One of my favorites from AJ. Thank you for reacting to her again - it was your first reaction to AJ that brought me to your channel. Love your new space, btw! Very comfy! Have a great week, my lovely friend. Hugs!! xo 🥰❤✨☔

    Thank`s Roni. Love your reactions.
👣I`m with you. It is hard to anyone I guess, to find any reason for "our" Angel to be needing to ask for forgiveness for who she is. I guess we all would want to hear a little more about her thoughts around that line. Some has made a few "may-bees" and "perhapses" about it, but I guess it`s not so easy to speculate about. Most of the lyrics though, gives more understanding, as Angelina is tributing her family as her inspiration and her caretakers. So another "perhaps" could possibly be she has gotten aware how her family has been greatly influenced by her talent and her wish and her goal in life !? We don`t know, of cource.
There is no doubt for me that this is a great song though, and it still grows on me, even though I liked it very much from the day it was released. Her third original, and somthing quite different from her first two songs; - "What is Life" and "Oslo" 👣 🤗

  • @anthony7400
    @anthony7400 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

We love your reactions. She wrote and released this when she was 12. I think you misunderstood her intent... Angelina was both thanking her family for being "her shield" and acknowledging the burden she places on her family by her career that started at age 7. By age 12 she basically relocated her family to Los Angeles CA. I believe minus her father who may or may not still be married to her mom. Now her family wanted her career to "go slow" only performing concerts in summer, be in regular school as much as possible, and not doing promotion for her even after she signed with Republic at age 14. Her EP recently released "old enough" is a hint that she is ready now, though even that was not promoted. Long story short while her family had some wealth imagine the pressure of a child feeling that she is both uprooting her family, potentially causing break up or at least placing a strain on her parents marriage, having to try to earn a living that supports her family. All while starting age 8 also raising millions for charities with her performances too.

ThatRoni, I am not sure if you had seen YOURSELF yet, but your Happy Birthday message to Angelina was incorporated into the video I released on Angelina's Birthday JAN 10th.
In this one - SHIELD - You remarked the line 'FORGIVE ME FOR ALL THAT I AM' threw you off. Well, there is sometimes context that brings the opaque into CLEAR Focus . . . SHIELD was written by her in Tribute to her still very-much alive Mother, Sara. Who other than your own Parents might that line apply to more, yeah, and it really makes you think about the line EVEN MORE when you know it was written with her Mother in mind.
ThatRoni, it might seem a bit ridiculous and overkill, but I wouldn't mind offering some context for Angelina's performances before you react. Many of her songs have deeper messages or come with specific contexts.
    Thanks, 😇Jim

Given the understanding we have behind the song where the backstory that Angelina has dedicated this to her fans but from what I understand it was actually written about her mom when she says forgive me for all that I am I'm wondering if it's more about how she might be a handful or a burden or has put a tremendous strain on the family albeit exciting and positive.

Interesting lyrics and I like how she opened up more to harder vocals but I don’t feel that she’s really reached her true potential as yet! I’m staying on the fence about her yet.
