I saw an old man in speedos body surfing at this level at Pipeline last year. He must have been in his mid 60s and there were big ass stormy 20 foot faces coming in. Insane!!!
Wonderful video overall. Good music , paired with really really good bodysurfing. Funny how surfing is fun.... but body surfing is a whole different level.
That was me at the end taking off on the bomb... only two guys out me and this cool guy from Australia we traded off waves for almost 2 hours. Thanks for the video!!
You don't have to lie to kick it Christian. You've never even been to Boomer. You've never even been near La Jolla, CA. You're always photoshopping yourself into videos and what not -- go back to gambling in Vegas (take me with you).
@@vanmelum I've had some excellent meals in La Jolla. Does that count? I struggled to get out to a break on a major bay somewhere on Kauai and got rejected, but it looked so good I charged harder through the shorebreak and current and made it out the second time. When I got out there, 2 body surfers were on it already. One was a tall guy who came down from the north shore and another was his friend who had flown in from La Jolla. His friend used to post on alt.surfing back when usenet was still alive. I think his first name was Tom. Those guys could bodysurf, but they were pretty humble about it. None of this self-promotion BS.
how do they get fast enough to ride such big waves? whenever I try to bodysurf waves more than 2 feet either I'm too early and only go along with the wave for a coupe of meters before it passes on faster than me, or I'm too late and it just breaks on me. do you need to be going really fast with flippers to bodysurf 3 or 4 or 5 foot waves?
It would be amazing to find a group of people that do this in the UK I've always done this when I'm at the beach but never knew this was an actual thing like surfing or body boarding. Makes you feel free. Please let me know if anyone knows of a group of people that do this.
Funny!!! but very dangerous to do that close seabed or sand. I've hit with mi head suffering medular compression also. Just sharing what I've experienced to others
Its the SEA: Only ever wear 1 flipper.....much quicker / safer recovery after being 'dumped'. Also, have a spare 'motor' if you get caught in a rip... FUN, FUN, FUN......Awesome Vid! Only 1 flipper in the SEA fella's. enhance your SAFETY!
I didn't know this was so advanced! May I ask, not to be rude, but what is the point of body surfing? It seems body boarding or surfing or even rafting is much easier and faster? Again, just interested in knowing why you guys do what you love. Thanks.
Cameron David having done all three for over 18 years and competing in surfing/bodyboarding I'd say it's not about what's easier or anything like that. It's more so about just having fun flopping around in the waves. It's just a different sensation and way of harnessing the power of a wave. Also, from a performance perspective, the maneuvers in surfing are harder than bodyboarding and bodyboarding maneuvers are harder than bodysurfing maneuvers which makes each sport a little more difficult to get to a level of enjoyment based on performance. That said bodysurfing is done mainly for fun and less for athletic performance.
Im a die hard surfer but I've had some of my best moments in the ocean bodysurfing. Shorebreak barrels i can't ride a mushy wave forever and do tricks like some of these guys, but the appeal to me is the purity of bodysurfing- just you and the wave, immersed in the ocean, and getting barreled is the best- even you're getting barreled surfing there's so much going on and you're usually trying so hard to come out of the barrel you don't get to just enjoy the view. Bodysurfing for me is 100% just getting barreled and not worrying about anything else. 9th street Laguna is a great spot for that, big South swell, wedging barrels right on shore, beautiful beach, doesn't matter if it's windy it's pretty much onshore every afternoon in California making my local spots a lot worse than glassy or offshore conditions, plus the crowds here in Cali in the summer are ridiculous and that's not really am issue in shorebreak barrels either.
Disagree... performance bodysurfing is very difficult that is why very few people on earth are at the top level, its just too difficult to do. I think i am a solid bodysurfer, but only performing at 20% of what i consider a high level with underwater finswimming techniques.... just super difficult to do and takes great strength to hold form
@camerondavid,,,, its all about what we are experiencing as surfers. I have been riding all sorts of wave craft since i was 5 years old, that is almost 50 years ,,, yikes. I have a quiver of long and short boards and bodyboards... tool for every condition. Over time i have migrated to bodysurfing more as it is more challenging and i am actually getting better at it as a 54 year old ...
No need to assume anything. I love the ocean and bodysurf shore break all the time. I was just wondering about why you would bodysurf an open rolling wave when you could harness the wave's energy much more efficiently with a board?
Stree eetz good question. NO its not. (Some people will say it is because they simply don't know what handboarding is) If they use a pad on their hand it is called handboarding. Body surfers were the ones riding the waves with nothing more than fins. Again good question.
Jocky Rohnson because the fins are just used to aide in the catching the wave part while the handplank is aiding in the riding of the wave. Bodyboarders use fins as well. It's a common tool. Also the two activities are considered to be different. I wouldn't expect some land locked hick to know anything about water sports though. Lmao dumbass
Jocky Rohnson oh, well since handboarding is more popular in hawaii you should know the difference more than anyone but I guess you're just someone who is apparently so painfully stupid that they cant understand the simple difference between handboarding and bodysurfing. Keep focusing on the part of the comment that I claimed where you live though. Lmfao, dumbass. Now you should reply "oh well I clean the dishes so I know what handboarding is." because that would make as much sense as your last two comments.
Jocky Rohnson one day I can dream of being an overweight hick who struggles to understand one simple concept? Sounds great. Hahaa something you do everyday? Coming from someone who has lived at the beach for over 20 years, if you're bodysurfing everyday then you're lame as fuck lmao. Sounds like your life is hella fun "bro". Sweet emojis broh
3:23 that’s the most insane wave I’ve ever seen bodysurfed
Six seconds?

I bodysurf and I don't even need fins to do it.
Heck, you don't need a swimsuit, depending on where/when you're groovin'. But to max fun and safety, fins are essential muchly.
