Nothing new. Anyone knowing 1900s history or detailed Middle Age descriptions knows how grim things get. The real surprise you can get here is on certain nobles being specially cunning and manipulating. Because the limits of cruelty are kind of intuitive for people nowadays; So long as you don 't live in a cave, that is.
As a fellow reader I can add - they have no idea how scary Myne is. And how many Vader references are there, lol. "Blue haired guy" and her are perfect sith master-apprentice pair, in terms of the Old Republic sith traditions...
To explain the respective position of both priests in simple terms, -Evil Santa is the head of the duchy's church. He presides the church duties, ceremonies, and external affairs completely. -blue hair priest is the head of the personnel from that same church. He usually decides most things having to do with management of blue robes and grey robes. That's why deciding if Myne joins the church and the conditions for her joining befall mostly into the scope of his authority and duties rather than Evil Santa's usual duties. Technically, Evil Santa has a higher position than blue hair. However, their duty are different, and as such, blue hair has a firmer grip on authority when it comes to decisions about the personnel itself. It's not like evil santa cannot overturn some of his decision on this matter, but the power balance is not as easy as a "x > y always", as It also comes down to what kind of connections to the rest of the duchy nobles each of them have, which here ends up making each side here being unable to strictly make the other obey on every decisions. There's a bit of power balance at work here. The white robe is the highest priest robe possible and only worn by the head of the church.
17:52 Since I can't find mention of it in the comments, and the anime doesn't explain it, to Crush someone with your mana, you HAVE to be stronger than them. You absolutely need to have enough mana to completely overwhelm your opponent to Crush them like Main did to the High Priest, Evil Santa. The sea will crush a lake will crush a pool will crush a pond will crush a tub will crush a bucket will crush a cup. A Commoner has little to no mana, being in the range of "thimbleful to spoonful," with those who die to the Devouring being between "cup" and "bucket." Most Nobles are around "pond to pool" with Archnobles (Dukes and the like) being more around "lake." No one would ever even think to claim their mana to have the vastness and depth of the sea, which is why I haven't used it. Using that analogy, Main has an _Olympic_ Pool compared to the High Priest's regular Pool. Because even though he's got the highest position in the church, he was still sent there for being weaker than his siblings. The Head Priest (as you found out when he leads the knights against the giant trombe) is technically still a Noble (and thus called "Lord" by the knights) because he _chose_ to join the Church, because he didn't want the power and political responsibility that came with the fact he was vastly more powerful than his own siblings. If Main is an Olympic Pool as a 6 year old, Head Priest Lord Ferdinand is comparable to something within the top 50 or 20 lakes in the world. And if you watch the series through a second time, you'll realize that Main keeps getting stronger and stronger, and Ferdinand has to constantly re-evaluate his plans, or push through with them much earlier than expected, such as introducing Main to Sylvester _before_ she was even adopted by Karstedt. It's why they did something so drastic as a sting operation against the High Priest and why Sylvester gave her that necklace-contract. Her mana grew from an Olympic Pool to the size of a small lake, and it keeps getting _deeper._
For the record the High Priest's first name is Bezanwanst which can be organized to Bösewanz which is German for "Evil Creep." Wanst also is German for belly, so his name basically means "Evil Fat Bastard."
Tuuli crying over the possibility of the nobles killing her parents isn't really her overreacting, especially since her worst fear came this close to coming true. Were it not for Darth Myne Tuuli would have been orphaned and had nowhere to go. Little kid or not she had every reason to be worried. That plus the scene of Tuuli crying makes the following scene of Myne choking out Fat Santa even more satisfying to watch than it already was. The anime staff went on to make some poor decisions about what to include or not include when they made season 2, but they certainly got it right when they included that here.
Just saying Ascendance of a bookworm has a an OVA 2 episode and this was before mine enters the Temple. I recommend that you watch it too. We will have season 3 this coming summer! I waited for a year.
I always thought of Main’s “force choke” working more like auras in Tensura. Like how veldora’s mere presence can kill weaker beings, just directed at one person.

The High Priest, white robe, is as "high" as the ranks go. He is an executive with the authority that goes with such a role. The Head Priest, blue robe, is the leader of the blue robes. He is the guy that actually gets shit done and as such the High Priest can't really control him. Plus Head Priest is a complex character as you will see later.
funny thing is yes he can pop the myne here only because she is holding back if she were using her full power she actually has more mana than he does but he has more skill controlling his at this point but later on in around season 4 when she is in school she becomes about as good as he is at controlling mana so she becomes busted af

Spoilers a head: Ferdinand is the one who marries myne in the end, which means his mana must have been close to her own mana. That's why he could have killed her if he wanted to.
@Sasank Kodi I know and when I said she was holding back I didn't mean intentionally she was holding back because her mana was not flowing out correctly which limited its power so she was technically holding back by accident and later she actually has more mana than him but not enough to make it to where no children can be conceived BTW I love the LN they are so good

The reason why they think that Myne is rich is the way she is dressed and how clean she is for her baptisim. It's the reason why she gets help after falling down laughing. The same tunic style dress that Turi wore was fit her pretty well but on Myne it was too big. The dress was reworked to make it small enough to fit Myne without cutting it so the dress could be reused one day. So there is a lot more fabric on tiny Myne. The hairpin also something only rich people or nobles are buying now as well. When Myne says can give a small gold she over plays her hand. High Priest is a noble. There is no way that a grey robe would become the High Priest. If they are luckly and useful they will always have some where to live in the church. I don't want to say what could happen if they aren't. The grey robe are orphans that not even the commoners can take in. I'm not sure how much the common people know about the churches practises but it seems they don't like church and only attend the baptism and wedding there.
I see the white robe priest as head of the church structure itself. The gray robes are servants who are orphans, not clergy. The blue robes are nobility who act within the church structure to exercise power and perform the mana rituals that support the people. The structure is interesting. I think the head priest and high priest are co equal. Head priest is in charge of the nobility side of the church while the high priest is in charge of the church itself.

You missunderstood something abot the coup. Due to the coup noble died and people who were before send to the temple were recalled into noble socity to fill the loses. That hit the Temple 2 fold: It needs the Mana of the Blue robes to do its dutys and less Blue robes means less mana AND the familys of the Blue robes did donate to temple and when tehy recalled them donations also stop coming. So Myne having both mana and money is extremly valuable for the temple and mr santa was just a BEEEP trying to roll over a unknowing comoner to get what he wants. Myne basically can thank Beno for clueing her in and preparing her.
In the novels: High Bishop is the old fart and High Priest is the stoic blue hair guy. In the anime: High Priest is the old fart and Head Priest is the stoic blue hair guy. They use different terms but the Old Fart out ranks the blue hair guy in the Church.
From how I see until season 2,Main/Myne's knowledge will change the entire country economic,science & technology expertise....The world Myne lived now is kind of low of future knowledge
If you're Catholic, you would've probably picked up that the old guy is the Bishop. The head priest is actually under him. Of course, modern Catholicism works differently (especially in terms of worship, but also in terms of structure) but there's some analogies. The clothes of the Bishop are definitely Catholic-inspired. The hierarchy also isn't that different, the difference is the roles they play. Especially with sacristans. Irl, they definitely don't wear gray, nor are they made to do as much labor, and they definitely aren't _all_ orphans, but I guess it's somewhat closer to their medieval counterparts, but not that much.
The High Priest (i.e. evil Santa who's called High Bishop in the books and manga) is the highest authority in the temple. He has ultimate authority over everything in the temple, but is supposed to do mainly the general strategic goalsetting, as well as the religious leader. In practice though he's so laza and incompetent he does barely any work at all and leaves most to the head priest. And he is still a technically considered a blue priest mind you, regardless of the colour of the robe he wears. The Head Priest (blue-haird guy and called confusingly enough High Priest in the books and manga) is the second highest in authority in the temple. He is supposed to do mainly the day to day administrative work, but in that pair he does basically all the work of both the high and head priest. In part this came to be because the high priest likes to push his work on others where possible and in part because the head preist got so sick of how riddled with errors what little work the high priest bothered to do was in the past, he basically went "fuck it, I'll do it myself" soon after taking his post.
I looked through the comments but didn't see any mention of the correct term. Myne wasn't "force choking" the "High Bishop" (as he's called in the novels. She was directing all of her mana at him, crushing him with the weight of her mana. Like the rest of the blue priests, the High Bishop was rejected from noble society due to his low mana. The weight of Myne's mana was too much for him. The High Priest, though (Ferdinand), he could have prevented the crushing on himself, but took it anyway to stop Myne. Edit: I won't say too much because a 4th season will eventually come, and this will be super vague, too vague to fully comprehend the full meaning. The reason Ferdinand is so taken aback by Myne's willingness to die with her family, he's never gotten to experience the love of family. He's in the Temple because he has no loving family except for his step brother.
Just to keep the name straight, you should use the light novel title for the evil priest. He is the High Bishop, and the blue haired man is the Head Priest. Or you can used the fan name, Evil Santa.

Yeah, I was looking forward to you getting to these episodes in season 1. I knew the high priest was what's the guy in charge of the church, but basically is just an a-hole bureaucrat. And the head priest here's more of a "Boss" as you'll see in season 2.
The old guy is head of the temple so he have big power in the temple meanwhile the high priest is head of all blue robe priest and priestess so he have 2nd one that have power in temple
Myne can read but there are a lot of words she doesn't know. Basically how the commoners, merchant class and nobles speak is going to be different. Myne is really great a writting order forms and handling forms at the gate but she doesn't understand litterature. Before the coup at the capital there were tons of nobles. The stronger nobles will be ones who inherrit and the weaker ones are lucky if they can remain with the families. Many of the weaker nobles join the church and their familes pay for their maintances and the running of the church. Not all the nobles are super weak just the weaker ones in their families. Some nobles are children of mistress and would feel threatened if they remained at home. Because of the coup nobles that were send away, have been asked to come home. So the church less money and nobles to tend to their duties. This crisis for the church can last years, this why Myne's money and mana are so important. It allows her some protection although not much. Turi crying about the nobles killing commoners was not over the top at all. I'm not sure that the head priest is above the high priest. I'm pretty sure the high priest(guy in white) is in control of the church but leaves most of daily duties of the church to Head Priest(blue outfit). Outside of the church though the Head Priest out ranks the high priest. Mana and family connections are everything in their society so the high priest can't just do whatever he wants either.
The anime's job titles are such a mess. What on earth was going on with them when they thought that high priest/ head priest was perfectly fine despite actual cathedrals having a high priest and a bishop (evil father christmas is the top guy and should be called the bishop) There was so much foreshadowing in these episodes (a benefit when the light novel is so far ahead of the anime and the anime studio really cares about their show). BUT I CAN'T MENTION ANY OF IT ARGH ! Part 1 was extremely well adapted. Myne and Ferdinand's (and Benno's) voice actors are now the voices that I hear in my head when i'm reading the books. Such brilliant performances. People really did wear wooden shoes. Often it was just the soles (that were strapped on with leather) but if needed (for protection) they would be enclosed clogs. (Remember that the lower city is currently supposed to be literally awash with animal and human waste)
It's pretty funny. High priest is a noble but he is a one of the weakest ones. If I remember corectly blue robed priests (including high priest) are not even alowed to learn magic.
SPOILERS : Ferdinand, (blue haired guy, head priest or high priest in the LN) is a noble, attended the Royal Accadamy and entered the church for his own reasons.

In the anime: High Priest is the old fart and Head Priest is the stoic blue hair guy.
They use different terms but the Old Fart out ranks the blue hair guy in the Church.
From how I see until season 2,Main/Myne's knowledge will change the entire country economic,science & technology expertise....The world Myne lived now is kind of low of future knowledge

If you're Catholic, you would've probably picked up that the old guy is the Bishop. The head priest is actually under him. Of course, modern Catholicism works differently (especially in terms of worship, but also in terms of structure) but there's some analogies. The clothes of the Bishop are definitely Catholic-inspired. The hierarchy also isn't that different, the difference is the roles they play. Especially with sacristans. Irl, they definitely don't wear gray, nor are they made to do as much labor, and they definitely aren't _all_ orphans, but I guess it's somewhat closer to their medieval counterparts, but not that much.
The High Priest (i.e. evil Santa who's called High Bishop in the books and manga) is the highest authority in the temple. He has ultimate authority over everything in the temple, but is supposed to do mainly the general strategic goalsetting, as well as the religious leader. In practice though he's so laza and incompetent he does barely any work at all and leaves most to the head priest.
And he is still a technically considered a blue priest mind you, regardless of the colour of the robe he wears.
The Head Priest (blue-haird guy and called confusingly enough High Priest in the books and manga) is the second highest in authority in the temple. He is supposed to do mainly the day to day administrative work, but in that pair he does basically all the work of both the high and head priest. In part this came to be because the high priest likes to push his work on others where possible and in part because the head preist got so sick of how riddled with errors what little work the high priest bothered to do was in the past, he basically went "fuck it, I'll do it myself" soon after taking his post.
I looked through the comments but didn't see any mention of the correct term. Myne wasn't "force choking" the "High Bishop" (as he's called in the novels. She was directing all of her mana at him, crushing him with the weight of her mana. Like the rest of the blue priests, the High Bishop was rejected from noble society due to his low mana. The weight of Myne's mana was too much for him. The High Priest, though (Ferdinand), he could have prevented the crushing on himself, but took it anyway to stop Myne.

I won't say too much because a 4th season will eventually come, and this will be super vague, too vague to fully comprehend the full meaning. The reason Ferdinand is so taken aback by Myne's willingness to die with her family, he's never gotten to experience the love of family. He's in the Temple because he has no loving family except for his step brother.

The Bishop runs the church but really the High Priest does all the work.

Just to keep the name straight, you should use the light novel title for the evil priest. He is the High Bishop, and the blue haired man is the Head Priest. Or you can used the fan name, Evil Santa.
the white robe guy is the High Bishop, head of the temple. He's a noble, but not a Noble. To be a capital N Noble they have to attend the royal academy

I knew the high priest was what's the guy in charge of the church, but basically is just an a-hole bureaucrat. And the head priest here's more of a "Boss" as you'll see in season 2.
The old guy is head of the temple so he have big power in the temple meanwhile the high priest is head of all blue robe priest and priestess so he have 2nd one that have power in temple

I get ya, Ascendance of a Bookworm is one of those rare shows that starts off pretty meh and the longer it goes on the better it becomes
Myne can read but there are a lot of words she doesn't know. Basically how the commoners, merchant class and nobles speak is going to be different. Myne is really great a writting order forms and handling forms at the gate but she doesn't understand litterature.
Before the coup at the capital there were tons of nobles. The stronger nobles will be ones who inherrit and the weaker ones are lucky if they can remain with the families. Many of the weaker nobles join the church and their familes pay for their maintances and the running of the church. Not all the nobles are super weak just the weaker ones in their families. Some nobles are children of mistress and would feel threatened if they remained at home. Because of the coup nobles that were send away, have been asked to come home. So the church less money and nobles to tend to their duties. This crisis for the church can last years, this why Myne's money and mana are so important. It allows her some protection although not much.
Turi crying about the nobles killing commoners was not over the top at all.
I'm not sure that the head priest is above the high priest. I'm pretty sure the high priest(guy in white) is in control of the church but leaves most of daily duties of the church to Head Priest(blue outfit). Outside of the church though the Head Priest out ranks the high priest. Mana and family connections are everything in their society so the high priest can't just do whatever he wants either.
The blue haired guy position is under the old guy, so no wonder he is silence when the moment old guy is doing his thing

The anime's job titles are such a mess. What on earth was going on with them when they thought that high priest/ head priest was perfectly fine despite actual cathedrals having a high priest and a bishop (evil father christmas is the top guy and should be called the bishop)
There was so much foreshadowing in these episodes (a benefit when the light novel is so far ahead of the anime and the anime studio really cares about their show). BUT I CAN'T MENTION ANY OF IT ARGH !
Part 1 was extremely well adapted.
Myne and Ferdinand's (and Benno's) voice actors are now the voices that I hear in my head when i'm reading the books. Such brilliant performances.
People really did wear wooden shoes. Often it was just the soles (that were strapped on with leather) but if needed (for protection) they would be enclosed clogs. (Remember that the lower city is currently supposed to be literally awash with animal and human waste)
the terminology confusion seems likely to come down to translation differences rather than anything about the anime vs light novels.
