Thanks for the video Toby and for highlighting the problem to others. I haven’t as yet solved my issue other than removing the Mudsling. I may yet return it to Nippy Normans and buy the cheaper version, or I might wait till I’ve done 500-750 miles on the tyre and it’s worn enough to fit without rubbing; I’ll keep you posted. I also purchased the new Metzelers Tourance Next (great tyres) and had the same problems, tried to make gentle Mudsling cuts but still rubbing, Im now going for the big chop, thanks for the clip, nice to know Im not alone with these problems.
They are great tyres but the muddling has almost no tolerance for larger tyres :( Although the Chinese muddling alternatives on eBay are really cheap and are much better to be honest ;)
Bought the "Aussie" mudsling while running the Anakee's and never had any rubbing issues and as for the road noise, again no such issues although you have now prompted me to keep a watchful eye and ear 👍
Given the panicky 3's didn't touch the mud sling confirmed what I thought as soon as I seen them nice quiet tyres you've put on, the new tyres look like they have at least a couple of mm more tread on them or is that my imagination? What make were they again & it would be great to know how there wearing in a few thousand miles 👍
Hey, I would put a few mm's of silicon on about an inch of the inside of the bit you cut of and stick it back on the original bit giving you a bit more distance from the new tyre and a couple of inches more in length 😉👍
I hate the noise of my Anakees too, but can't bring myself to pay $300+ for some Metzlers at this point with only 1600 miles or so on them. With earplugs I can't hear it, but wonder if bystanders hear the "Wroop, Wroop" sound like you can on a 4x4 with Mud tires. It must be the first time I've ever been willing my tires to wear out so I can justify new ones. I don't understand why they are so noisy, they really have very little tread, certainly nothing like a knobbly, but manage to be almost as obnoxious. Just fitted a "Chinese Mudsling" to mine, it doesn't look like it will rub, but without a way to go through the full suspension travel it's hard to be certain.
Would it have been possible to remove the mudsling and heat the offending area up to a pliable temperature using maybe a hot air gun etc and then using a rounded implement (Glass bottle, ceramic vase etc) re-shape the mudsling to the curvature of the tyre in the vital area? It may have saved you removing a section that is doing the job of preventing crud etc from getting in and around an area you're trying to protect..... Just an idea BTW. May I add that I don't have a GS1200 or indeed a mudsling but do enjoy following your channel all the same.

Here's an idea: Take the part that you cut off and overlapping the mudsling (on the top) by a cm or so and then plastic weld it. That would give you some additional clearance and almost the full length of protection.
RiderCamTV that's exactly what I thought... But instead of sticking with glue and/or epoxy, just make 3-4 little holes along the mudsling and use some plastic ties (flanges in English?) to put both parts together. You could even use some spacers in between to exactly set the amount of space needed behind the wheel. I hope it helps. Great video, thanks.
Is this just a problem with GSA and type of tyre? I wonder because i will be fitting one of these to my New 1250 GS and they come with the Bridgestone tyres.
OMG.....that is brutal. I bought the Chinese version for a fraction of the price. I too run Metzler 01 and I don't get any rubbing. Sometimes cheap and cheerful does win against overpriced branded items.

hey buddy, not with the anakee tyres but when we fitted the Metzelers we had to trim / mould it a little to stop it rubbing the tyre. Then we got cheaper versions from China and they fitted without issue. hope this helps Ride safe

My Chinese knock off Mudsling is definitely much shorter and provides more clearance to the tire at the front, the profile of the end seems to take it away from the tire. I'm more concerned with the end hitting the swing arm as a result, than the tire if the bike is ridden in anger. We'll see it may need a 1/2" or so off the end.
@@stevenharris4432 I've not noticed any sign of contact yet, even riding two up with luggage etc. I do however have the slightly taller and stiffer sport suspension so that might make a difference. What I did notice is how well it keeps all the spray and muck of the bike and passenger, big improvement and you can only wonder why BMW does not have something covering that area on bikes coming from the factory.
Fiveo waf I agree my bike is the 2017 lac model and I ride it on its lowest setting because I’m short so. I took a couple of inch of it and it works for me
Makes you wonder why BMW don't offer something more suitable for the vast majority of riders who don't go off road doesn't it? I bought 1 of the Chinese ones as a punt to see if it would fit my lowered standard GS and it looks like it would foul the swingarm behind the shock so I got the pukka mudsling instead. That seemed to fit much better and doesn't catch the Panaky 3's on the stand but I've not ridden it yet so we'll see! Maybe I should just refit my Wunderlich hugger instead and put up with dirty legs!
And iv always wondered why BMW put panicky 3's on most of there new bikes cos I bet there have been dozens of potential Buyer's that got of after a test ride thinking omg I couldn't cope with that noise all the time ..!!!
You should have got a Chinese copy off eBay, and then cut if needed, that way you could have kept your overpriced mudsling intact. FYI I've been using said Chinese copy, its perfect and a fraction of the cost and I use Metzeler Tourance Next on my GSA LC.
I know one of my friends he had adjusted the curve angle of the mud sling by heat gun, and now he have big gap between the tire and the guard

Only a thought, could you not have super glued the cut off back on existing guard with overlap enduring at least 1” to ensure good fix?

Hi Toby, i just picked up a new (Aug 2017 model) GS Adventure Rallye, and it has a mud slingger as standard. So maybe they are listening to customers.

My road tec01 are the same with touching the mud sling but it seems to happening when the bike is on the stand not when I'm riding

I know this one was a while ago, but did you have to trim out part of the Mudsling to make the tire fit? Considering getting one for my ‘18 GSA. Thx!
