So many people hate on these but I love them. The only thing I would do is lengthen the wheel base, bring the front wheels closer to the nose of the car. Just doing that (yes, not an easy task) completely removes all similarities to the Pinto it was based on. Just 6-10 inches, that's all it needs. A tube or boxed subframe and bodywork on the front quarters will make all the difference.

When he started hitting the gas, that exhaust sound caused my jaw to drop. I'm guessing the video doesn't quite do it justice! I would love a Cobra II.
Hi Roger Ward, Thank you for sharing this one was a "jaw dropper" for you :-) Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy. Hope you receive your Cobra II soon, Lou
Nice. Neighbor's son had a 78 King Cobra II blk with gold, lace wheels, 302, 4 speed, etc. He added a beefier cam, headers, 4bbl, and side exhausts. It was pretty quick! No idea what happened to it. I was just a kid at the time. Haters don't like this generation of Mustangs, but it's nice to see 1 well kept, that someone has had for so long!
I bought a brand new V8 four speed coupe in 1976, when i was a junior in high school. I had more fun and won so many street races in that car. One of my best friends bought a used 1976 Trans Am in 1978 and A whooped him every time we raced. Even with the V8 emblems very few people thought it was a 302 under the hood. A true factory sleeper.
1977 COBRA is just a beauty. The owner really taking great care of his 77 Cobra. Please say hello to the owner. Thanks LOU for sharing this beautiful Cobra .I really enjoyed watching the video. LOU really appreciate your efforts showing all great cars. Please have a great day.
I love the red-headed stepchild of the Mustang universe, the Mustang II/Cobra II. They kept the Mustang (and Ford) alive during the dark era of the mid-70s when OPEC embargoed us and emissions standards were going into effect. Ironically, the '74 Mustang II returned the Pony Car to its roots. The '71-'73 Mustang shared its bloated platform with the Torino and was overweight. When you drop a modern powerplant (like this owner did) into this lightweight package, you can move this car in violation of the laws of physics. Also, the Mustang II was not based on the Pinto platform as urban legend tells it. The Mustang II evolved into having its own platform and brought us the greatest front suspension for hot rodders & classic muscle car restomodders. I hope this Cobra II continues to kick Bowtie arse and take names for many decades to come.
Lol, this guy is so low key. Was waiting for him to say, "Well, she's got a slight steering wheel shake at 150 mph but she smooths right out at 163." We used to call cars like this 'scary fast'. Nice. Nice job:)
One of my nephews is 11. He simply refers to it as "the scary black car". It's very common for people to ask me to get on it when I take them for a ride for the first time. The problem is when I do that they grip the door handle so hard I fear they will pull it off. This is also usually accompanied by excited words like Holy **** or Oh My God. You can't floor it from a stop unless you like a grown up sit'n'spin. If you have the clutch out in 2nd at round 900R's and mash the accelerator she'll go sideways up the street. She gets rubber in 3rd and 4th and all that with a 3.55 gear. I won't say much about how fast I've had it going other than that first number you mentioned is attainable, just not advisable :) Fang
Hi David N, Happy to read "SWEET RIDE!" :-) Speaking of Mustang II's .... stay tuned, there are a few coming up on the Channel I think you'll enjoy, Lou
Cool Mustang, love the black with red stripe! "You just cleaned all the greenery..." I smiled at that one!! The infotainment system is a great addition, love that! Great to have the original pieces. This is definitely one that takes me back!!! Always enjoy hearing the idle!! Really fun video, enjoyed the story! Thank you!
Hi WickedFireFly13, The black with red has a nice look to it :-) Made me smile when he rolled up to the car show too :-) Thank you for sharing a wonderful comment, and you're welcome, Lou

I had my Mustang II for over 14 years. I rebuilt the 2.8 liter V6 with larger pistons, 4 barrel holly carb & offenhouser intake, 1 over comp cam, headers, 4 speed, comp ignition...screeming fast and could chirp the wheels a bit off the ground by slamming the gas peddle to the floor in 1st gear! I had to cut a hole in the hood as the carb stuck out.
I so love that these cars are getting a bit more attention. They were given little attention in the years after they'd been replaced and I had a great fondness for the Cobra package. Thanks for the video!

Absolutely fabulous. My first car was a 74 with a 302 swap. It was dangerously fast. With around 300 hp. I want to be this guy's friend. Only one criticism, and that's just me, I would save the weight from the infotainment system and extra battery because that engine is all the music I need.

Always liked these. They never got the love from Ford that the newer or older ones got. Lots of potential in that small block to fix the originals sins. Nice sleeper.

My dad had a Cobra and all through the 80's he told me it would be mine when I'm 16. Sadly he couldn't maintain it that long and had to sell it. But it had a strong effect on me - with only one exception every car I have ever owned has been a two door hatchback with 3 pedals

Nice car. I actually liked the 'looks' of these better than the previous generation with the really flat rear window. The '69 fastback is my favorite model year. I used to have both of those brochures back in the day. I don't recall being interested in buying one, but I sure do remember looking through them. Nice review!

Gen 2 Mustangs just don't get enough respect, they're a great way to build a muscle car on a budget. I'm thinking of doing a build with a new boss 302, 425hp is pretty tempting, but the new 302 coyote runs up to 505hp, of course a car that light with 505hp you might be pulling a Wile E Coyote.
I bought first one in AZ in Nov 75 cobra 2 I put 351 weezer heads comp ratio stayed same a old 289 hipo intake 600 cfm put 351 ex manifold Mr gasket traction bars shift kit I believe was c3 or fmx lots years ago side exit exhaust was quick for the day
Hi Fabio Quadrana, Those 1964-1970's are sure wonderful, and although this is not the most popular year, it in my opinion gets better looking with age. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
You beat me to it. That's what I always thought of the car - way too much like a Pinto. Well done by the guy to restore it and build it out to be something way more than what it was. That paint job must have cost a fortune.
A few people have told me that over the decades but I'm sure it will surprise you to learn that American does not share your view. The most popular selling Mustang was generation 3, the Fox Bodies. Part of that is because it was longest running generation at 15 years and part of it was it didn't have much competition. The Firebird dropped out during those years and the Camaro was in and out. The second most popular selling Mustang was generation 2, the Mustang II despite the fact that it only ran 5 model years. It's debut year, 1974, Motor Trend named it Car of the Year. The Mustang II had many innovations for the day and made standard equipment out of things like rack-and-pinion steering. In fact the front suspension of a Mustang II is the most commonly used front suspension by hotrodders and car builders today. The first generation Mustang, while having the single greatest year of sales in 1965, is only the 3rd most popular selling Mustang despite the fact that it ran 9.5 model years. Fang
You mean the ii sucks because it handles better, has more engine bay room, and isnt a 4000lb land barge like the 71-73? The first gen mustang was a falcon, and the fox body was a fairmont.
My favorite car...as you know! I'm so glad it had the deluxe Cobra II interior - sometimes they came with the budget interior. I think they should all have come with the deluxe interior only. I had a '78 Cobra and before that, a 1975 Mustang non-fastback. Both of mine had the 302. Not this fantastic over 400 HP as this one had. I've always said, if I had one again, I'd have the graphics painted instead of the plastic graphics that it came with. I know where I'm going next....that's to find the 68 Thunderbird! Thanks, Lou. Thumbs UP as always!
I'm not a fan of the add-ons and decals of the more dressed up models, but that and the bumpers and short wheelbase aside, the Mustang II was much better looking than people admitted. It had nice lines with either the formal roof line or hatchback and had more character than the 1973 blob that preceded it or the 1979 deformed door-stop that succeeded it (though the FOX Mustangs got better in later years). And the interior looked more inviting than that of just about any car in this category. I know the Monza was considered, at least in stock versions, a more capable car, but it was slower as well as ugly inside and out. Seems that people blamed the Mustang II for everything that was wrong with the 1970s.
I had a 78 coupe in high school. It was a v8 4 speed car. When my dad bought it the engine was just a bone stock 2 barrel carb 302. After we got done the car was stupid fast and took a whole lot of money on the weekends. The area I live in now is the area I had the car in I left during high school and just moved back as a adult over 20 years later and when i first came back almost every person I knew as a kid ask what ever happen to that bad ass mustang 2 you had? I still to this day regret saling that car. You hardly ever see them bc no body gave a crap when they were every where. Now a non running total mess of a car is kinda high and the running ones are getting on up there in price. It's by far one of the least thought of Mustangs but according to trend their day is coming look how high the price of the land yacht 70 to 73 cars have gotten and its bc not many people gave a crap when they were all over and now bc of that the few left are stupid high.

Hi Douglas Holloran, Growing up during the time of the car, I understand that Mustang Fans were disappointed from the 1965-1970 Muscle Mustangs back to a 302 as your high horse power option, however I find that this body style looks better with age. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I had a 1976 fastback with a 5.0 liter and a four speed in yellow with a yellow interior as well. I loved the car but my wife hated driving it…especially in the snow!

Many don't like the Mustang twos but they were the right car for the time. The inline 4 and automatic were anemic. With 4 people on board it had trouble getting out of it's own way but the v-6 ans later v-8 were fine.
Not my favourite car, but great to see such enthusiasm from the keeper, interviewer and viewers for this "also-ran" Mustang. Like a road traffic accident, you don't want to look too closely, but you can't help looking either... This Mustang II is as loud as the keeper's shirt. Wonderful stuff !

Had a '76 Hornet X 304 that used to run run with a couple of these and a Road Runner of the Day...they were all smog monsters. My Hornet would eat up the 'Stangs in the handling dept. as they came standard with 13" wheels...can you imagine. Even the small block 8's were rated in and around 120 hp stock. Kinda pathetic ...though its what we had and we had fun anyways.

I had a 77 Cobra 2 it was my friends car and he restored it to almost original it was white with blue stripes the only diff was it had leather interior it had a 351 Windsor instead of the 302 with a toploader 4 spd and it had a ford 9 inch with detroit locker with 3.73 gears other then that is was original and I had it till the mid 2000 when some collector guy offered me a nice chunk of change for it so I sold it off and the guy I sold it to still has the car to this day
I dont no why but It seems like these cobras r really coming into there own, they really seem to be aging gracefully. In my eyes at least, the good looks of these cobras are stronger now then ever before. Also there super light which is a big plus nowadays with modern mucle cars waying as much as an old truck, this things bout the same as frs/brz or a miata mx5, thsys crazy these cobras r awsome

The mustang ii is literally a ford miata. Its only a few inches wider and longer, and only a few hundred pounds heavier. It handles right up there too if you put the parts in.
Believe it or not, the C6 Corvette is the exact same length, 175 inches, and, as one my friends found, no match in a stop light race against my modified Cobra II ;) Fang

@@loucostabile no biggie but they just weren't appealing to me. I guess eventually sales were so low that they were were going to replace it with the Ford probe. Remember that one? Yeah, that IS pretty weird. The only thing I can come up with is Karma, which I don’t believe in anyway. Karma I say? Did I do something wrong in a past or present life, or did I do something wrong that has doomed me to forever to drive red cars my whole life? Don’t get me wrong, red, burgundy, maroon, or spicy red are good looking colors...on the right car. But, for me, red just doesn’t float my “car”, no matter how stylish it is. I’m fortunate that the red cars I do own have been excellent cars, albeit RED, or some shade of such. So, mark my words, when the time comes for another car, unless it’s absolutely gorgeous, it will not be red. Also, I despise red interiors. They fade quickly and have a tendency, in their faded state, to not match the other interior red parts of the car, like the dash or steering wheel or seats for that matter. Now on to white...just the interiors...love them but as they age, they start to yellow out, especially in older white interiors. It’s usually the arm rests or some other interior plastic part that ruins the look of the interior. Ok, enough rambling now. Keep up the good work! I enjoy your channel!
Thank you Edward Eleder for sharing the details on your color preference. Glad to read your enjoying the Channel, and appreciate the encouraging words "to keep up the good work!" :-) Lou
I think the front end and the side design are good but the rear could´ve been better designed, specialy the tail lights, looks like they don´t match the rest of the car. The front look of these Mustang´s reminds me the Maverick.

Lol, this guy is so low key. Was waiting for him to say, "Well, she's got a slight steering wheel shake at 150 mph but she smooths right out at 163." We used to call cars like this 'scary fast'. Nice. Nice job:)
Hi Michael R, "scary fast" Nice! Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Lou
I won't say much about how fast I've had it going other than that first number you mentioned is attainable, just not advisable :)

SWEET RIDE! The Mustang II fastback is my favorite mustang. My first car was a 78, v6, 4 speed. Miss it to this day, 32 years later.
Hi David N, Happy to read "SWEET RIDE!" :-) Speaking of Mustang II's .... stay tuned, there are a few coming up on the Channel I think you'll enjoy, Lou
Lou; That is definitely a WILD STANG! Great job on this car. I remember these when they were brand new.
Hi Paul Kirkland, "WILD STANG!" I like that :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
It looks great and that mean revving engine sound is perfect! Beautiful.
Hi Jeff, High praise :-) Lou
Has to be the nicest Cobra II I have seen. My first car was a 1976 CII and man... this made me miss it.

Thank you for viewing and sharing your story Harry Gaul :-) Lou
I so love that these cars are getting a bit more attention. They were given little attention in the years after they'd been replaced and I had a great fondness for the Cobra package. Thanks for the video!

Cars look better with age
I don’t know why but I love these little cars. Love the laser red trim.
Glad you enjoy this one T. Steinback :-)

Hi Lou! I'm glad to greet you again! Wow! This Cobra II is very cool! Black and red stripes are very beautiful! Thank you!
Hi Bad Russian, The colors look great on this car and the red really pops because of the black. Pretty cool, Lou

Hi Toshiro Hitsugaya, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope your build comes out the way you'd like it :-) Lou
I bought first one in AZ in Nov 75 cobra 2 I put 351 weezer heads comp ratio stayed same a old 289 hipo intake 600 cfm put 351 ex manifold Mr gasket traction bars shift kit I believe was c3 or fmx lots years ago side exit exhaust was quick for the day
Hi Rick Drackert, Fun when you see one you know well. Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story, Lou
Can't believe such regression in style from the beautiful Mustang from the sixties and early seventies to this one...
Hi Fabio Quadrana, Those 1964-1970's are sure wonderful, and although this is not the most popular year, it in my opinion gets better looking with age. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Fabio Quadrana ...Yeah, I mean it looks too close to a Ford Pinto. A fancier version.
Beautiful car. It's exactly what my 12 year old wants. I love the cobra2 mustang. Built Right they can be beautiful.
Hi Steven Baker, Glad you enjoy the looks of this car, and nice your 12 year old wants one too :-) Lou
Hi Brian, Happy to read "My favorite car...as you know!" :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hi No Name, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
ha ha ha... you're right ! 'Pinto dna' certainly not something to be proud of....
Beautiful !!

mustang 2 so much hate that i never understood , always glad to see someone that could see past the pinto side of them .
This pretty sweet

Good times, good times.

:-)
The mustang ii is literally a ford miata. Its only a few inches wider and longer, and only a few hundred pounds heavier. It handles right up there too if you put the parts in.
Believe it or not, the C6 Corvette is the exact same length, 175 inches, and, as one my friends found, no match in a stop light race against my modified Cobra II ;)

I absolutely hate the color red. It’s ironic because both my daily drivers are RED!!! Go figure😑
Hmmm, Yes that is interesting you hate red and that's the color of your daily drivers. I wonder what that means? Lou
