    Dr. Bronner's shampoo is better than an ACV rinse and I prefer the peppermint scent. They also have a conditioner and they are completely natural.

      MrsSixftBBW thanks for the recommendation! I've used Dr Bronners soap but not the shampoo.

      @JamieSemenak 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sorry for the confusion, the soap is the shampoo. It has MANY uses! You will definitely need to do a hot oil treatment after or moisturize with oils since it strips just like and ACV rinse. Give it a try. I like your channel and subscribed. Please subscribe to mine also! I'm going to start interlocking. I've been twisting for a year and need just what you described.

    I’ve been taking swim lessons in a pool for a month now. I first thought if I put two swim caps on that’ll be all. I was terribly mistaken. My hair was drenched!!! Soon after, disgruntled and disappointed, I started doing research and stumbled on this video. I watched this and studied, finding all the products and hair tie/elastics so I can prevent this issue again. After following all the directions to a T, for the past month, I have had success with my greater regions of hair being dry, and all the areas by the nape a little wet, but not too wet. I also DO NOT have to rinse my hair with water before putting on the cap, but I think that advice is very useful if your locs are long (greater than 10 inches). My locs are still very short, so I got away with not rinsing my hair. If you are wondering if this works, it had worked! The most water got into my nape is when floating on my back, otherwise I was good while doing/learning the breaststroke!

    Nice recommendations. When I started my swimming lessons (which I need to continue... poo), I used the Aubrey Organics Swimmers Shampoo and Conditioner. They worked really well for me, even to the point that I continued using them when I stopped swimming.
    Normally I wash my once a month and condition my hair as needed, or when I do a wash n go. For my hair (during swimming lessons), I was able to use the Swimmers Shampoo & Conditioner weekly without my hair drying or feeling heavy. A little goes a long way, it usually lasts 6mo -yr.
    I suggest you try a sample, it costs about the same price you paid for the Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo and conditioner. Aight, I am done w/my sales pitch. lol. Have a good one.

    I met someone who has dreads and I love them. My hair goes to my butt and is naturally curly. Also, I'm on a competitive swim team. Not sure if I should wait until I'm done with swimming, which could be years, or just deal with the awkwardness of dread caps. Any tips??

    • @EricaRasconYoga
      @EricaRasconYoga  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ashly Klemm well, dreads are a very...committed...hairstyle haha. Not easy to undo. And there are a lot of cultural factors to consider out of respect for their origins (from Kushites to Druids to and more modern wearers with religious and socio-political motivations). With that said, they could look awesome on someone else but locs may not be the best choice for you. (That may not be your only motivation but it's the only one you mentioned.) Proceed with research and compassion if you haven't already!💜
      If you decide that locs are a good option for you, I'd recommend waiting until after swim season. Loose curls (compared to coils) will take longer to loc. Swim caps won't help you much since the hair still gets very wet, very often, making it harder to loc. Frequent shampooing within those first few weeks will cause a lot of frizz and potential damage to your newbie strands. Wait it out 😉 swim season will end soon enough and then you'll be able to locs faster, stronger, and safer. Best wishes!

    • @EricaRasconYoga
      @EricaRasconYoga  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh just remembered that you said "years" for swim to end rather than just a season. That will make the wait harder but still worth it!!!

    Hey Erica, I'm a lifeguard at a waterpark and I pretty much get in the water everyday and I have dreads. But how should I wash it ? And do I need to wash it with shampoo everyday ? And if so what products do you recommend ?

    • @EricaRasconYoga
      @EricaRasconYoga  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Jose! Thanks for saving lives :)
      If you're in the pool every weekday, I'd recommend washing your hair with chlorine-specific shampoos at least 2-3x a week. Paul Mitchell makes a good one. On the other days, use a gentle shampoo and ultra rich conditioner. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes to help reverse the drying and damaging effects of the chlorine and the chlorine-specific shampoo (both of which can strip your hair of good, natural oils). I like Design Essentials Almond Butter Express Moisturizer. Following up with a lightweight, natural leave-in conditioner. Maybe something with Rose oil or jojoba oil?
      Chlorine is horrible for our skin and hair so I don't recommend skipping washes or co-washing only. You gotta get that stuff off of your hair and scalp! But in the process, your hair can also get dry so it's essential to moisturize well.
      I don't know of organic or ultra natural product that are good for chlorine so all of my recommendations are conventional products.

      @josefana5094 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +LaMencia Berry I used to swim three times a week when I was learning. Now I swim maybe once every three months lol. I wash after every swim. Between swims, my wash schedule varies depending on my activities. My hair is SUPER dry--zero natural oils it seems--so I try to get away with every 4-5 days.

    Would oiling your hair before getting in a pool help?

    • @EricaRasconYoga
      @EricaRasconYoga  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it depends on the oil and time. Oils might create a very temporary barrier if they sit on top of the hair (instead of penetrating into the shaft). But chlorine removes oils, so oils won't help if you're in the pool for long.

    Been going swimming, at the YMCA, all summer, at least 2 to 4 times a week and boy did it tear my hair up !! 😭 At first I thought it was just the dead ends but I'm losing hair everyday...like 3, 5, 6 to 12 inches !! 😭😭 My hair is to my baxide (so I can't fit caps) and I do wet my hair before getting into the pool, after I get out I rinse my hair, and I wash it as soon as I get home. I absolutely LOVE swimming but idk if I will sacrifice my hair over the pool !! 😢

    • @EricaRasconYoga
      @EricaRasconYoga  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, clean out the chlorine and restore the moisture the best you can. It's also worthwhile to seek out saltwater pools. They're not nearly as harsh on your hair. That way, you can enjoy swimming with less damage.

    • @EricaRasconYoga
      @EricaRasconYoga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, yes. If she's getting her hair wet EVERYday immediately after installing her locs, her hair won't have a chance to loc. You're better off waiting until she gets back. Or using extensions, which may hold better but they're expensive and some say less authentic experience... Good luck!

      Do what works for you. Running water over the hair doesn't remove the chlorine chemical. Additionally, a layer of conditioner on top will trap the chlorine on the hair. For many, this may cause dryness, brittleness, breakage, and other damage.
