It's not actually advised to use the iGPU media engine for stream encoding with OBS in gaming, because you incur bus contention. It's advised to keep everything within the single GPU, capture, compositing and encoding. The encoder is actually dedicated silicon and it doesn't have a performance impact. Capture and compositing do have a performance impact, but trying to capture across different GPUs is even worse, plus it's an absolute torture to get working. iGPU encoding is easy to set up but bad when system bus is already under heavy load.

Not really a good advice. If you are planning to add a dedicated GPU, the iGPU is mostly useless. Intel's QuickSync performs nearly identical to Nvidia's NEVNC when encoding in video editing software.
For streaming, the benefits of offloading the encoding to your iGPU are negated by the latency of copying the frames from the GPU to your iGPU. You actually get more performance encoding directly on your dedicated GPU since NVENC encoding is done directly on the GPU die and it only needs to send back encoded frames.

If you have a GPU, your GPU does everything the Integrated Graphics would do. Therefore, your IGPU sits unused, and adds no performance at all. In that case, the non-F variant is only useful for an emergency backup in case you are ever without a graphics card. Now, is it worth that slight discount to not have an emergency backup? Maybe not. But F models aren't some boogeyman to be afraid of.

If you have a graphics card (which most content creators have), then save some money and go with the "F" version. There is no performance difference between the 2, the only difference is the "F" version does not have a GPU built in. Why would you use encoders on the CPU if you have a dedicated graphics card?? Without the graphics card and relying on the internal CPU graphics engine can be fruital with wait times 10 -15 time longer for specific rendering. Great points regarding the F delimiter. I bought a i9 9900kf based upon reviews that I would not see a benefit of the K chip because of my 2070 Super. I will not make this mistake moving up to the I7 12700k. Thanks

So what you going to do when your 2070 super fails on you? because I can honestly tell you I got a 12600k paired with a gigabyte 2070 super gaming oc and I've currently had to RMA the GPU due to issues so paying a tiny bit extra for the K variant is well worth it and is an absolute life saver, as the IGPU plays alot of AAA games like RDR2, GTA5, aswell as FH4/5, Forza Motorsport 7 , COD, CSGO and tomb raider. As well as it responds extremely well once overclocked offering upto 60% more performance. So upgrading to a k variant 12700k (depending on what resolution you play) is well worth the upgrade. Not only that I came from a 9600k and the performance difference compared to a 12600k is phenomenal.

Also intel iGPU's can't play most demanding 3d games so you're obviously lying again! You should always have one or two backup gpu's just incase your primary one fails, anyone who is serious about computers/gaming knows that... Thanks, this is very informative and interesting. I am looking at upgrading to the i7 12700 and don't know much about what the k version adds to the package, but you helped me to understand that it is worth it to get the k version. I do some gaming, but also do some video editing and such so it can't hurt to get the k version.
These past 6 months I have been upgrading some computer parts and I am just needing the CPU, Motherboard and Ram to complete my upgrade process. I have already upgraded to a new BeQuiet 802 case, WD Black NVME and Samsung SSDs, Geforce 3060, Corsair 850 watt power supply, Noctua cooler and Noctua 140mm fans. I just need to figure the right motherboard and ram combo to go with the 12700k and not break the bank too.

I'd pick a Z690-based motherboard; even the lower-end ones aren't much different from the mid- and top-tier mobos performance-wise. A H670-based mobo would work too but note that it doesn't support CPU overclocking, so don't pick a H670 mobo if you plan to OC. Unless the H670 board is priced significantly cheaper than the Z690 board I'd still go for the latter, even if you don't plan to overclock now since you can actually OC in the future so you can squeeze a little more performance and delay the next CPU upgrade. Also, you'll be faced with the dilemma of investing in DDR5 RAM which is still expensive OR using the older but cheaper DDR4 RAM (especially if you're upgrading as opposed to building an all-new system). At present, DDR5 shows little performance benefit compared to DDR4 for most workloads so if cost is a major factor then DDR4 is definitely more attractive.

@@Wigglythegreat2 My approach is to look at the detailed specs of each motherboard I'm considering (these are available on the manufacturer's website). Then I compare these specs side-by-side and look for the best features for the price and/or which features are important for me. The specs should be mostly similar across Z690 boards of the same price bracket but might differ in things like power phases for the VRM or total current supported (e.g. 70 amps), for both of which more is better. It might also differ in less technical specs like number and kind of USB ports, number of SATA ports, number of M.2 slots, etc.

For gamers that like to overclock the F variants are attractive because they deliver slightly better results. We are speaking about 2 or 3%. While I personally really love the fall back option of an onboard graphics card, I can understand, why some folks want the F version. If you are really after those overclocking records, then go for it. In that case 2% can be huge. But if you only want get some extra percent performance out of your gaming rig, stay away from those F version as they have the plague. That IGPU is worth it's weight in gold when overclocking your graphic card.

Would you ever consider a NON K variant?
The 12900 and the 12700 do include the iGPU but have a much lower TDP.
Does the (considerably) lower TDP also guarantee a considerably lower temperature of operation when on full load?
In theory, one could chose the 12700 over the 12600K or chose the 12900 over the 12700K.
Having seriously high temps is an issue, especially for smaller builds and perhaps for those living in much warmer climates.
