    I grew up in the neighborhood that bordered between Black ghetto area and Chinese ghetto area in New York during early 2000s. As a Korean American, I didnt gain any protection from Chinese gang elements because I wasnt them. The Black gang elements thought I was Chinese, so they let their animosity loose on me. I was jumped at least 3~5 times in the span of a year, and "robbed" countless times although there wasnt any weapon present, but implied threat of violence was always there. So, when I hear these upper middle to upper class film making graduates complain about the racism, its really tiresome to hear. Especially, the "racism" they are complaining about is some side eye glance they got at a grocery store, or perceived to be pass over for a promotion. Unless you got beat up for being Asian, please do not talk about Asian hate, I dont have patience to indulge in your privileged tantrum.

    I was assistant director to a few well established film festivals in the New York City area. The sheer amount of politics that goes into not just what gets selected but also who wins is insane.

    Remember when our heroes on the screen showed us how to pick up our selves and use our "trauma" to strengthen our selves and our understanding of the world.
    Unlike now a days where most movies show us that we should use our disadvantages to victimise our selves and expect the world to change to our standards instead of learning to navigate the world as it actually is so we can adapt and survive.

    This is why I love Film Threat and how you've democratized press for indie filmmakers. I've had two short films (Lonely Hearts & DOORS) favorably reviewed by Alan and yet they got rejected from the major festivals but we got into a lot of smaller ones where we were introduced to so many folks who we work with today. It's crazy because I always thought my films were good and could stand beside some of the other shorts in major fests but they didn't really have an agenda. I just wanted to make good movies that anyone could love. Still do. Anyways, I love you guys and you all have given me some great quotes for press blurbs. The end.

    The funny thing is, if the blame is going to be placed on generic White for whatever type casting or studio shenanigans were going on back in the day, should we turn around and blame "Asians" in the same way for the kind of nationalistic tantrums Mainlanders pull when talking about their country? Or the attitudes folks from K-Town can have when it comes to who they choose to work with? How about the arrogant ignorance some have of the actual historical culture that built and maintained the foundations that they now benefit from. I'm pretty sure it's not customary from any of these countries to tolerate someone sh*tting all over the nation that takes you and your family in.
    It just showcases and excuses the very thing festivals like this cry over when they're the ones indulging in it.

    "And listening to all this, part of me was going... When did we as Asians become so weak?"

    Asians don't appear as frequently in American films but to be fair there are massive Asian exclusive film industries all over the world. Half the shows on Netflix are Korean, almost all animation is Japanese and Hong Kong action films have dominated the global box office for decades. Also Asian Americans don't scream and cry if they are not in 100% of all media at all times like a certain other ethnic demographic.

    Seek a glimpse into the fantastic: truth will sing to you;
    ...or not .
    Seek a glimpse into the mundane: you will wade in the ( tepid if not toxic ) whirlpool of regression where very few can swim:
    Forcibly tell people you ARE the fantastic , then they might notice the sky is blue and changes color not at a whim or a whimper, but at the anvil of reality

    We may look back and find these anti-rascist reactions totally appropriate. Recognizing others suffering should increase our empathy. Chris, slavery shaped our entire society and will always be a major story. If everybody has suffered like you, it might be good to have stories from other cultures showing the human will to live to compare your own relationship to your own will. Isn't seeing into a very different person's life by a good cinematographer more interesting than another stereotypical rom-com where nonwhites are just work friends/love helper?
