Re what you said: "I know it looked like some people were getting killed, but some people looked like they were getting f**ked." Yes. Both. At the same time. In the most horrible ways possible, in that scenario. That scene is called the Blood Orgy for a reason. (And as others have already mentioned, it was cut back significantly. The original was so horrific, so graphic, so horrifically graphic, that the test audience was really horrified by it; there were even claims that some of them fainted.
I read that they hired some adult film performers and amputee actors for the "hell" scene to make it as shocking and realistic as possible, but most of the original footage had to be cut.
Some of the things that were filmed, but its not sure whether they were edited in or it: - A man getting crushed inside one of the doors. - An extended shot of the man shoving his arm down his throat and tearing out his own insides. - A person getting a hammer and spike to the back of the head, knocking their teeth out (there was also a scene cut from the early exploration of the ship where they found a tooth and root floating in zero g.) - A woman sodomizing a man with a lead pipe.(We see them behind the console for a quick flash, the man is bent over the console.) - A female crew member being "eaten out." - A man having his liver eaten (we see a brief flash of this.) - A woman was going to be tied down and things done to her (It's unclear what.) There were other things that were either filmed or they did test runs on, but not all of it was used. They did use amputees and pornstars, because they were the only ones comfortable being nude. One of the actresses in that scene did an interview not that long ago talking about some of it. There was an entire operation built around just that one scene. It's weird, because it almost feels like the occult took over the production for just that one scene. Like they went NUTS. It is overstated how much was cut out. People think there was 15 minutes of torture. There were about 15-20 minutes of TOTAL movie cut down, including a 5 minute briefing scene at the space station (which you can see online) and little bits and pices throughout, for example there were about 20 extra seconds of DJ's strung up body, showing intestines and such. There was a "visions from Hell" where, in that same scene, DJ cocked his head up at Miller and smiled. Most of what they cut was not actually gore. It was little bits and pieces of character, just to get the movies run time down.
@@StevenJShow Yeah, from an interview with the director, he tried really hard to avoid cutting anything from that or the 'Vision of Hell' sequence. Most of the shots weren't cut, they were just compressed - a 2-3 second shot might have been compressed down to just 1 second. Paul W. S. Anderson has commented on how it causes some really interesting subliminal effects - he's reportedly had multiple fans and colleagues tell him about shots in the Blood Orgy sequence that he knows weren't in there. Sadly, the original cut film is gone - it wasn't stored correctly and it disintegrated. Reportedly one of the producers had a VHS tape with some of the cut footage on it, but I don't think anything's come of that, and I'd question if the quality is worth it. While a remake wouldn't hurt - they'd be able to do some amazing stuff with modern practical effects, especially modern FX makeup - I wouldn't want anyone but the original team behind it. And I completely get why the director doesn't want to touch it - you really only get this kind of thing to happen once in a career.
YES!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCI FI HORROR MOVIES EVER MADE! There were talks of an unrated director's cut, but it sadly would never see the light of day as some of the footage was destroyed or damaged after being stored in a Transylvania salt mine. 38:57 Going frame by frame, you are technically correct. It's a man, bent over the console, and a woman is behind him, shoving a metal pipe up his ass. Any "pleasure" you think you see, is actually an inversion of it, into torturous pain. That's what that "other place" does. It inverts and distorts everything into chaos. Oh, you see? Not with your eyes. Oh, you like sex? How about we do it the most painful and damaging way possible? Oh you like to eat? Let's rip out our intestines. Some people say it's a 40k prequel, because the writer mentioned it was something of an inspiration, but what it really is, is "The Haunting" in space. It's a ghost story on a space ship, or a demon story. The creature that Miller is talking to at the end is part Weir, but it's also (according to the shooting script) "older than the darkness behind the stars." It's supposed to be the spirit of the devil. "The Dark" aka "The Lord of Darkness."
That's also why characters like Peters seem to lose control of what they're doing. Why is she running after an apparition of her son? Because for that moment, the intelligent force on the ship has half posessed her. She's aware of what she's doing, but she's not in full control. Seduced by her own pain and guilt. It's subtle, but she absolutely feels like she abandoned her son.
Legend has that there’s an extended clip of the “blood orgy” scene that’s next level and will permanently damage anyone who views it. The footage was lost for years and was eventually found, but was too damaged to view or put back together.

“Dr Grant” was Sam Neil’s character from Jurassic Park. You kept saying throughout the early part of the film, “time to go, time to go”. Yet they couldn’t, their ship, the Lewis and Clark sustained too much damage and they had to repair it first. That’s why they couldn’t just up and leave. Don’t worry, you weren’t crazy, in the torture scenes, they were having sex and or being raped. The torture sequences from hell were a lot of that. Cutting off skin, tearing off fingers, rape, Barbwire being wrapped around their bodies. You are correct, the Director wanted to put in anything that makes the viewing public severely uncomfortable. This movie originally was closer to three hours but they had to cut out about 30 minutes of footage. That footage was all the torture & rape scenes. All the pain & suffering scenarios from when the other crew were in hell. Supposedly, it was so violent that the ratings board was going to give this film an X or an NC 17 rating. Paramount, the production company did not want that. So the Director went and cut all the torture sequences in hell out of the film. He was going to release it on an extended directors cut DVD in the early 2000’s but unfortunately all that film was lost and or accidentally destroyed in storage. I truly love this film. It’s one of my all time favorites. For some odd reason my family & I always wanna watch this film around Christmas time. Even though it has nothing to do with Christmas, lol.
The title Event Horizon is actually a giveway to how the ship’s engines work. An event horizon is a boundary beyond which events can’t affect an observer. It’s the boundary of a black hole beyond this point light (or anything else) can’t escape. The gravity of the black hole at this point is so strong that you would have to exceed the speed of light to escape. According to our current understanding of the universe, nothing can accelerate to beyond the speed of light. Which means you are stuck.

Agree with the other comments. This movie effed me up as a kid big time.
Reminds of the shining. Basically the shining in space.
