Brilliant analysis, Sam! I've never thought of the Female Gothic as something so complex, and yet it is. In my opinion, it's necessary to have a holistic view of the Gothic, rather than trying to dissect it so much that we might end up with nothing. Social class, age, gender, reader, writer... all these are important elements, as you point out, that might be missed when analysing the Female Gothic. Also, what does it mean to each of us nowadays compared to what it meant in the past. We're really in psychological grounds, in my opinion.
