- "Hogan's Heroes" was one of the most beloved and strangest sitcoms. Bob Crane starred in the show for six seasons playing the wise-cracking American P.O.W, Colonel Hogan. #InsideEdition
I'll never forget the day my aunt came home and heard it on the news and mentioned it to us as teens at the time. Broke her heart because she loved Bob Crane as an actor on that show. Broke my heart too to know someone did that to him and his murderer was never brought to justice to pay with their own life, as they should. I love that show and its awfully sad and gut wrenching to know someone took his life.
Well said, totally agree.
I did the photo analysis on the case and was an expert witness. I interviewed Carpenter twice. There were no other solid suspects. It was Carpenter, and everyone knew it. As you know, his life quickly fell apart after the acquittal.
Awesome, dude!
I have to agree. Put yourself in Carpenter's place. He was friends for a while with Crane. He was getting women he wouldn't otherwise get. Then probably on the night or leading up to the night of Crane's murder. He told Carpenter he has to stop being a tag along. Crane wanted to try to get his career back on track. This would make most people mad, if your best friend told you to F-off. Now no more women and fame of being "Hogan's best friend" (Carpenter would feel like he was used for the making of video's and teaching Crane about the video equipment. Now that Hogan knew how to operate the equipment, in Carpenter's mind, Crane didn't need him anymore and felt betrayed). Hence the cord around the neck. In Carpenter's mind it would be "Here take this and cord and connect it!"
Exactly, crazy !
Blood analysis says otherwise. So much for being an expert.
Thanks So Much! I've Always believed it was Carpenter that killed him, & your remarks about the case Convinces me. Thanks!
I just found him (the son) very sincere and honest, also a great character and personality. I highly respect and accept his opinions about his Father. Bob Crane (his Father) is a wonderful man with great sense of humor, but as always the case with every body - everyone has their own dark side.
I do not care if Bob Crane screwed zebras in the town square.
He was a funny guy and brought joy to millions (and still does) .
You might not care but the women he taped (without their knowledge) or the husbands of women he slept with might have.
You mess around with married women you're asking for trouble and you have it coming IMO. Plenty of single women out there.
I watch Hogan's Heroes on a regular basis... Rest in Peace Bob Crane.
@@Vichedges saw a documentary about some guy who looked all the tapes and everything else and said all the women knew that they were been filmed
He wasn't funny he was a pervert
@Lamont Cranston INC. It most likely John Carpenter but we will never ever know
Carp did it.Blood in the car brain tissue in the car.He had no alibi and he had motive and he had the opportunity. The only thing the silly buggar didn't do is clean the car very efficiently!
I tend to think Carpenter did it, but the blood in the car was finally proven by DNA not to be Crane's blood.
@@marcsonnenberg623 The blood tested was contaminated.
John Carpenter murdered Bob Crane without a doubt.
Too much of a coincedence that there was blood in his rental car and that blood matched Bob Crane's rare blood type.
The blood did not come from anyone who had the car prior to John Carpenter according to police.
@@marcsonnenberg623 No, it wasn't. One sample was a stranger's, the other was too degraded to confirm.
To me, there is too much evidence that points to John Carpenter. But, that's just me.
That is just you. You don't have access to the police records, so you have nothing to go on except what you've see on TV and read in books, usually by people in the same situation. That said, he probably did it. :-)
Apartmemt wasn't broke into. Bob was in bed when attacked. Body still in bed.
John (not the "Thing" Horror movie director!) Henry Carpenter's been guilty.
I don't think Carpenter did it but he knew who did or at the very least knew it was going to happen. There is too much circumstantial evidence. For one thing, Carpenter would always schedule his business trips so that he would be in the same city as the one Crane would be performing at and Carpenter would stay with Crane in the latter's apartment. But this time, Carpenter stayed in a hotel. Also, Crane had made arrangements to take Carpenter to the airport on the morning of the murder but Carpenter went to the airport on his own without first going to Crane's apartment. After Carpenter got home, he called the apartment but a detective, Ron Dean, answered the phone; Carpenter never asked Dean why the cops were there. And then he called Bob Jr ostensibly "just to chat" (something Bob Jr. insists Carpenter had never done previously). And since Crane's apartment had been burglarized in another city, he had become very security-conscious and always locked his doors and windows at night but this time the cops discovered that the door was left unlocked. Maybe Carpenter told Crane that the former would stop by before he left town to pick something up in the apartment and convinced Crane not to lock the door, maybe so that Carpenter would not disturb Crane while the latter was sleeping (Carpenter's swimsuit was found in Crane's apartment during the investigation; maybe that's what Carpenter told Crane that the former was going there to retrieve but never did). To be sure, all this would not have proven that Carpenter committed the murder but as I said, it may show that Carpenter knew that Crane would be murdered that night.
@@princeofcupspoc9073 even the detectives said it was John carpenter. Don't need to see the police records, all this is public knowledge now, it's all been out in the open for years. The circumstancial evidence stacks up really high pointing to carpenter... he more than likely did do it.
About 13 years ago, I had a brief email correspondence with Crane's second son Scott (who was the only child he had with Sigrid) and he denied that his parents were contemplating divorce and that his mom knew what sort of man Bob Crane was (since he was having an affair with her while still married to his first wife) and she more or less accepted it. Scott even told me that his mom never remarried after Bob died and wore her wedding band for the rest of her life. I asked him about the Robert Graysmith (the same man who wrote Zodiac) book about the Crane murder and Scott insists that this book was full of inaccuracies. No, Scott did not try to idealize his father or attempt to deny the things he did but from what he said and from what I read independently about Sigrid Valdis, she does not sound like a person who would kill - or order the killing of - another person. Yes, she may have benefited financially but as Bob Jr said in this video, the money she ultimately got, while substantial for the late 70, was not a king's ransom. IMO, Carpenter either did it or knew who did. Dead men reveal no secrets.
If Robert Crane went after that many Women, there had to be many a jealous husband lurking in the shadows, His murderer could have been any number of people. It's a shame for His children to know such terrible things about Their Dad and then have Him murdered as well.
Art Trombley It's academic now because it is extremely unlikely that this case will ever be solved. It's been almost 40 years since the Crane murder. Carpenter was the police's last best hope. Short of someone coming forward and confessing to the murder, we'll never know who did it.
Dennis Nayland Smith Murder has no statute of limitations like most crimes do.
Art Trombley I know that but after a certain period of time passes, the police no longer investigate a murder and file it away in the cold case file. The cops who originally investigated this case have long since retired from the force. I doubt if anyone is still investigating this case.
Actually I read a reporter named Hook from Phoenix had the police re-examine the DNA found in Carpenter's car, but one sample was too degraded and other, they did not know to whom it belonged. He had a book coming out in March. From what I have read through the years, I have very little doubt that it was at least 2nd degree murder by John Carpenter.
MY BROTHER RECENTLEY PASSED AWAY. I WANTED TOO ASK HIM IF HE REMEMBERED US SEEING BOB CRANE IN A WALGREENS DOWNTOWN CINN OHIO WHEN WE WERE TEENAGERS. HE WAS VERY FRIENDLEY AND POLITE. Considering HE was a famous ACTOR. RIP MY BROTHER AND BOB CRANE
John Carpenter did it. the Scottsdale police botched so much at the crime scene that key evidence was lost, compromised, or not even collected. Carpenter's rental car had blood smears in several places, which was the same type as Crane's (they didn't have DNA testing back then). when arrested in 1990, Carpenter called his wife and told her, "they finally got me." Although she denies his guilt, she quotes this exactly. Crane and Carpenter basically ran a small soft porn and kink video and photography, and Crane told several people that he was going to dump Carpenter because Carpenter was an idiot and was living off his association to both Crane and Richard Dawson. Carpenter had a notorious temper. He always stayed in Crane's apartment when they travelled, but this time he sought a separate place, but was definitely at Crane's place and even had a key.. His behavior the morning after the murder was very strange, and his interviews with police were cryptic. Detectives seemed more interested in the celebrity and his dark business than sealing the crime scene and so much evidence was missed and mishandled.
Could be.
I too tend to believe that Carpenter did it, or at least perhaps hired someone to do it, or at least knew who did it.
That having been said, I wouldn't put too much weight behind what he said to his wife, supposedly, "They finally got me", since that could just be a statement of exasperation, since he knew for many years, since 1978, that he was still the prime suspect. It's not necessarily an incriminating statement.
Very sad case and I feel sorry for all his (Crane's) kids.
Scare Crow The kids always suffer the most. My boy didn't know that I was His Father until He was 13. It was extremely sad for Us both.
your source?
Carpenter has beaten The Rap Twice now. He was found Not Guilty at the Murder Trial and the blood found in his Rental Car in Arizona was Proven Not To Be Bob Crane's Via DNA Testing.
Well, he was cheating on his second wife, sure she was not happy about it, does not mean she killed him. I believe Carpenter did it out of jealousy of Crane's fame and Crane dismissing him. From what I read Crane was trying to straighten his life out.
Before she died, Patti Olsen Crane stated that she knew about her husband's "hobby" and was ok with it.
@@jennifer_m.8613 Duh, as if she would say something else.
Sigrid Valdis?!!? Have you lost your mid? No way. She's a gem.

I’ve read the book. It’s pretty good. It also talks about his freelance interviews for Playboy and chronicles his time as John Candy’s personal assistant. Candy comes off as a real mensch.

Funniest show ever. Comedic timing at its best if you know your history then you get it
45 years on never forgotten justice for Bob crane ❤Rest In Peace 🕊️🙏🕯️🤍
I think there's a good chance that Bob used the wrong woman, and her husband or boyfriend found out and took offense. The murder itself was hands on and violent, lends to the argument of it being personal to someone. Choosing to strangle someone to death with a telephone cord shows a lot of emotions, none of them good.
his head was bashed in.
You have to ask the logical question, if the Police had knowledge of the suspect that defended his marriage, how powerful did he need to be for the Police to ignore the investigation
Bod Crane had the "Voice" very deep bright ..his voice did every emotion..
actually, the show was set on the old MGM back 40 lot, home to gomer pyle, andy griffith, rat patrol, 6 star trek outside shots, and even gone with the wind.
the back 40 was bull dozed in 1976.
Yeah this is how the Studios treat their past… once it's old it's getting demolished, torn apart, destroyed, bulldozed, thrown away, burned or tossed to the garbage… VERY seldom actually restored and honored.

John Banner died in 1971.
The theory was that he was bludgeoned with a motion-picture camera stand, and the killer wanted to send a message that the pornos they made together with girls were related to the reason for his murder.
Crane was bludgeoned to death with a camera tripod.
@@titankiller666 Allegedly. They never found the murder weapon.

Hogan's Heroes was just a great show with a great cast. RIP all. Still watch a rerun after a hard day.
That's the amazing thing about Hogan's Heroes it went on longer than the official war did
MASH about quadrupled it.

I pray justice will be served and the truth be found for his family. I also myself have B- negative blood and I think it would be highly unlikely that someone else with the same blood type left blood in the rental car, I believe it belonged to Bob Crane.
You can say it doesn't matter but you're not the husband of one of those women and you're not a woman he might have taped without consent.
He led a very seedy life and if you lie down with dogs you get fleas.

With all of the blood and tissue in Carpenter's rental car, same rare blood type B as Crane's?
Crane's blood type was A+. Carpenter's was B+
DNA analysis finally proved that the blood in the rental car that Carpenter used was not Crane's blood
Just from what I've heard of the investigations, It's hard not to think Carpenter did it. His actions after the murder, his clothes still at Crane's apt where he was suppose to meet Crane so he could give him a ride to the air port but without warning decides to go him self.
MY speculation is they went out to a club, Carpenter had an argument with Crane. Crane went home and Carpenter came over to crash the night since Crane was suppose to give Carpenter a ride to the air port. Some time in the night Carpenter got up clubbed him over the head and tied the cord around his neck as a message.
He left in the early morning to fly out and when he got to where he was going called Crane so there was a phone record of him calling from somewhere else.
Usually, a murderer leaving something tied around their victims neck is a sign of extreme anger. There was also no forced entry. These facts do not lend itself to the idea that the killing was a random one.
As a retired investigator, imo, Carpenter Definitely killed Bob Crane, Investigators in the first & Second cases, found Nobody else who had any motive for killing Crane, other than Carpenter. Becoming friends with that guy who was basically a leach, was Bob Crane's downfall.
Crane loved women and enjoyed having a good time with them. Men did that back in the day. That kind of fun hurt no one.
hurts the spouse and family. He committed adultery many times over, and was ultimately stoned (bludgeoned) to death for his sins
Hurt no one? Bob Crane might argue that....
@@Billygoatsgrruff I seriously doubt Crane sought out married women. But I believe some sought him out, after all he was very famous at the time. Yes adultery hurts a family, if the guilty party confesses to them.

Crane was bedding so many women it's very possible he, sooner or later, came across a boyfriend/husband who found out and took revenge. The murderer

What a great comment! I totally agree.
@@icecreamforcrowhurst Me too.
I remember hearing part of the Police report where it said that there wasn't any sign of a forced-entry. But I wondered about any Forced-exit because someone had to have known about the rear sliding window-doors and how the risk of being seen was lower than going back out the front door.
Either someone was there and Bob went to bed and told the person let them self out when they leave, or he was expecting someone that had a key and was to wake him up once the person came in .
It made no sense with the story that was given to the public , my gut tells me that 2 people may have been in on it just in case things went wrong at first and they had a Plan-B . Bob had to have been in a deep sleep because any person with a key would be taking a big risk coming in quietly because an Emergency Vehicle noise or local car crash could be heard while the door was open and prompt Bob to wake up .
The person coming in would also have to know that nobody else was making a visit such as a another women for a quick fling.

It leads one to believe that Bob Crane knew his killer.
I heard that Bob Crane was a very light sleeper, so how did he not wake up when someone entered the room?
I personally think the reason this crime has gone unsolved for so long was because there was too much focus on the sexual part of Bob Crane's life. It may have played a factor, it may have not. People get murdered all the time for various different reasons, and they all have complex lives with lots of things going on in them. Sex could have been a motivator, but it could have also be financial, or just a robbery that went bad.
It was also believed that neo-Nazies were behind it. Hogan's Heroes was not exactly sympathetic to the 3rd Reich- at the end of each episode the Axis is not only defeated but humiliated and embarrassed as well...!
Well, no, the cord around Bob's neck (which didn't kill him) indicated that this was personal.
I believe it was carpenter
I have said this many times.
If the American authorities had have conducted a proper investigation in the first place we all wouldn't be sitting here making wild accusations. The only thing left I have to say on this is that if the evidence hadn't have been mishandled, or contaminated or whatever you wish to call it, it is very likely the culprit would be rotting in prison or already dead.
Damn Shame what happened to Bob
John Carpenter. Had a rent car completely cleaned out that was later found to have a blood smear but too late for DNA.
Was killed with a camera stand. Wounds match the stand. Great book on it.

I wonder if he's secretly like his dad
Isn't getting laid like his dad was that's for sure.
Does Bobby not have a family of his own to focus on?
Yes, it's terrible what happened to his dad - yes, he and his siblings deserve to get justice for their dad - BUT everyone involved is dead or very old.
Scott Crane deserves to know what happened to his dad, too - but in the meantime, he is working to preserve his dad's memory and not holding a vendetta or crusade.
Let it go, trust that the guilty party/parties will get justice in the afterlife, and do what your father never got the chance to fully do: spend time with and focus on your family.
Didn't the youngest son run a tacky website where one could pay for gruesome photos and p0rn? I for one am interested in what the eldest son has to say. He was an adult when his Dad died and doesn't seem to have an agenda.
John Henry Carpenter did it or had someone do it for him, hands down. There is never a justified reason for murder, especially like this. He's paying dearly in the afterlife for this.
For Bobby Crane to accuse his stepmother Patti of having something to do with it... it's your standard "you broke up my parents' marriage, I don't like you" case; she truly loved him, look at the last 30 years of her life, what she did to make sure she was buried by her husband, etc.
And, yes, her son is his father's child - just look at him! Same eyes and mouth and jawline!
RIP Col. Hogan

I believe carpenter did it but his second wife was clearly a hanger on who throughout her hollywood life was looking for someone she could marry and take them for everything he had
Best comment I've read. I got that impression also.
Bob Crane didnt love women. He LOVED WOMEN!
No, he made LOVE to WOMEN!
Having paid close attention to this since its occurrence, my personal belief, or gut instinct if you will, is that Carpenter either did it himself, or participated in it.
So what if Crane loved to play around with women. He was a man with a large appetite. Big whoop.
It would be a "big whoop" to many of the husbands and boyfriends of the women Crane slept with. I believe Carpenter was the killer, but he sure as hell wouldn't have been the only one with any motive.
i know nothing !
He was supposedly warned, by his agent, to stop video taping himself having sex. Now, the attitude would be if you don't leak a sex video you obviously aren't committed to making a hollywood career.
The cops should have looked at the husbands/bf's of every woman Crane had fornicated with for the past year both in Scottsdale and LA.

Now no more women and fame of being "Hogan's best friend" (Carpenter would feel like he was used for the making of video's and teaching Crane about the video equipment.) Now that Hogan knew how to operate the equipment, in Carpenter's mind, Crane didn't need him anymore and felt betrayed). Hence the cord around the neck.
