a note to take away from this is to become such a good and trusted mechanic that other shops don't only call you to come over they leave you with the hole shop
The Southern Tier of rural Western NY where the only time you lock your car is at church on Sunday morning during Zucchini season so you don't get a seat full. :o)
Thats a common problem on that vintage vehicle. I never thought about using a head light bulb as an additional tool for a short finder. I learn something from each video i watch of yours.
Eric, anything electrical is filled with magic smoke. First rule of electrical and electronic repair is avoid letting the magic smoke out. When you do the system fails and a lot of bad things can start happening in a big hurry. You are on a posting binge. Keep 'em coming.
You definitely make the distinction between your average mechanic and a technician that can diagnose problems like this. I’m currently in tech school to be a diesel mechanic and I want to be as good as you at diagnosing problems (especially electrical). I love your videos! 👍🏻
Outstanding vid Eric! I'm glad they called you instead of shooting the parts cannon at it! You found the short in under 20 minutes..WOW. You are a diagnostic guru. Shorts are a nightmare..but you make it look easy. You are well respected in the community. 🤘
I ordered some stuff off amazon including that Astro 40SL light you use. On the warranty card it asks "how did you hear about us" Obviously, I selected "other" and wrote in South Main Auto on TH-cam....lol
watershed44 Or in the case of this shop, fuse swappers...oh to have been a fly on the wall to see the red faces when Eric showed them the issue..."there's your problem, lady.... the wires are bare and it let the smoke out..replace that part, put in a new fuse and the smoke shall be contained again"
I think you are too modest with your skill. It's not just luck that leads to a quick diagnosis. As with many fields, there are so many intangibles that come along with diagnostic work, like little details in how something sounds, or when the fuse blows. A lot also comes from experience and, with wire shorts, knowing what places are vulnerable or likely to be problems (like spots where the harness turns a tight corner or passes near an edge). Your skill leads to a quick and accurate diagnosis, not luck. Keep up the good work! This industry needs more technicians like you.
The EPIC New-Video-Every-Week-Day Series continues. This is my favorite kind of video, the troubleshooting/diag videos. Although I also like the plain ol' maintenance ones. But this diagnostic ones have more of a story to them. I feel like I'm watching an episode of the old House (M.D.) TV show, except with cars instead of people. Solving puzzles is just fun.
Brilliant troubleshooting in this video! Cars today rely heavily on advanced buses that are not as easy to troubleshoot as generations before. Thanks for this video!
( I hope you read this) I've been a new subscriber now for about 2 weeks, I've responded a few times on a few videos. Last night (1-21-2018) I put my 9 year daughter to bed at 8pm, well I checked on her (like I do ever night at 8:30) I see that she's under the covers watching you and your family on TH-cam. She loves your puppies and likes you working on cars. She is with me on the weekends if I'm not keeping my home town safe (I'm a police officer) working on airplanes as I'm an A&P IA Airframe and PowerPlant mechanic inspection authorization. Keep the videos coming Mr. O I'm learning alot and so is my daughter lol
South Main Auto Repair caught my daughter last night watching those videos when she should have been sleeping and getting ready for school!! AWESOME family video Mr. O!!
Congrats man!!!! 80K Subscribers...should have 1 million. But we have already spoke about the BS involved in that. I always look forward to your video's more than any other mechanic. Keep up the good work!!
Great video Eric! Nice job finding that in short order.(I honestly didn't notice that pun till I re-read it) As you said, an accurate wiring diagram is key as well as the right tools......some experience doesn't hurt lol. keep up the good work - a lot can be learned on your channel! I enjoy electrical - but without the proper info./resources/tools - its like shooting in the dark. That was an extremely quick diagnosis.
I'd like to think if you can do it, I can do it but you're being way too modest! Clearly, you can do it but some other mechanics can't even do it haha you're the best!
Niamh Healy yeah working with having Wiring Diagrams, makes troubleshooting a bit easy. Workshop owner neglected this obvious point to see but it happens sometimes. Thank you Eric O
He's right though. If he can do it, you can do it. You just need to have the data on hand. If you can't find that data for free, then you are stuck at an obstacle. You can get over the obstacle by paying money for the data of course and knowledge is power. Basically, you can both do it but Mr.O Has the power in his "pocket" (laptop) and that's what makes it so quick and easy for him. Technically (for this job) he didn't need any fancy tools. Just a wiring diagram and following the wires. It's not always that obvious but you still CAN find the problem with enough time on your hand. So in the end, you can both do it but Eric can do it faster, at the expense of having to pay a subscription to various vehicle databases.
Great vid. Watched your old vid (2013?) on a MoPar 2.7 water pump while trying to help my son. Big difference in videos from then to now Dr. O. Same quality content. Thank you.
The "road treatments" cause all this mess! Couple that with the engine's heat, its a recipe for disaster! Just a matter of time. Finding the problem is worse part, but Mr. O is GOOD at what he does, even in "the field." Thank you for this one.
Man .....You are absolutely the BEST ....!!! More patience than a saint ....!! They should show your videos in auto tech schools .... Nothing like working the problem from different angles... I would definitely drive my car from Scenic Scranton Pa .... for you to repair it .... !!! Would be a Long ride in Limp Mode ....Lol.... 😁
HAHA nice diagnosis holy crap how did it run. WOW all bare and broken strands so that baby had to smoke check the insulation...guess that was your smoke. Only a CKP sensor that smoke checked they are lucky. When you said you were wiggling the O2 sensor & the fuel pump was kicking on I started laughing thinking this is different. Well I give kudos to that shop owner they realized their limitations and called you instead of throwing parts at it.
love your videos I am a professional mechanic been doing it for 17 years specializing in German cars and I still learn from your videos great information thank you

Thousands of heat cycles from the exhaust manifold broke down that insulation on the crank sensor wiring. Very common problem on the GM 3.1L engine from the early 90's except the crank sensor wiring is on the rear of the engine underneath the exhaust manifold.

Ever find yourself moving your head around trying to see around brackets and what not while you're watching the video? I hate that. Awesome video though!
I find myself seeing a missed problem, and want to comment about it, so they can go back and look at it! But, by the end of the video, it's been fixed, the parts are (somehow) replaced, and the thing I thought I saw was just water (or something) glistening in the over head lighting!
In my area, this kind of problem should take days or the problem would never be solved ( if it was no bare wire ) Eric you would find this problem even if there was no copper exposed. The truth is that these guys are not bad but ordinary mechanics and you Eric is a professional with skills way above an ordinary mechanic. I have noticed that some people that have fewer skills than you have 2 million subscribers but you are on your way there and I hope you get there fast. People help yourself and become a paetron to SMA channel.................
Hey Eric, after watching you use your Astro SL40 light every day and how well it appears to perform for you I sprung for one. I'm sure its the most I've ever spent for a small work light but with its features, your comments and the amount of light it puts out, I figured it would be worth it for my old eyes. Got it today and although I wish it was US made, at least it's Taiwan made and not China. It is every bit the quality piece I was expecting and plenty of light for even the "old classic reacharound."
I’ve used a Telcom tool we call a breakdown. It works perfectly when you have a solid short between two primary wire conductors. If your second conductor is the chassis (short to ground) it doesn’t work. The breakdown tool welds the short and then the tone will only travel from the tool to the short and not beyond the short. This is used in cables with hundreds of conductors and is awesome when your affected circuit is miles long. You must remove the “component” at the far end (the customer house In Telcom) then you GIVE HER THE BEANS!!! Weld that short with high voltage and amperage, estimate the distance in ohms to feet, and follow your pickup coil right to it. This would be risky in an automotive application. But hey follow the smoke 😂 I feel like your power-probe tool may have similar limitations and maybe works well if you can isolate two individual wires that are solidly shorted together (less than 10ohms) and connect the two leads to them. I do not recommend applying the weld it together part on a car though 😂
When one gets a low 'Whoa' and or 'Oh!' from Eric midway through the video, one guesses that he has the problem's rough location. Wow this guy is fast, for some one more thorough than lucky.
Nice quick diagnosis, I hope you charged extra for the blisters! The only time I've had good results with the short finding buzz box is on trailers and buses in long runs where everything is lathered in undercoating, under hood's some luck under dashs useless but a good tool to have at times.
I think Hyundai uses sub par materials, rotting control arms, sub-frame, wiring harness, twisted camshaft. i'v seen this a few times with the crankshaft sensor, but it wasn't blowing the fuse, just stalling. good find, great vid.....
Hi Eric I have the same fuse saver tool I find that the breaker is way more resilient to blow than the fuse it had in the original circuits sometimes it's good but sometimes not what I do sometimes I put a breaker 5 amp less than the original fuse but in your case I bet that if you were diagnosing with the fuse in I bet that you would've had a hard time playing with the wires because the fuse would of blown very quickly it's amazing how many items are supplied power form that one 10 amp fuse.
Nice find On the Completely burnt wires Eric O I been working in a 2000 4runner that keeps blowing the running light 10 amp fuse and I still can't find were the short is been 4 days shorts are not always easy to find the engine bay fuse box on 4runners runs straight into the firewall great video as always Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
I learned the hard way that most vehicles have the o2 sensors tied into the ECU fuse, because I replaced the transmission in my explorer myself, and was lazy about checking for wires touching the exhaust. needless to say the wires were laying on the exhaust and melted through, leaving me dead in the water on the highway haha
