When he was on, his ratings were really up and down. They would go way down in the fall and winter, and up in the summer, Come to find out it, was because of his popularity with college students. When they were at school, they would congregate and watch his show in hubs and communal TVs. During summer, they would disperse, and watch from their own tv. The ratings went up because of more TVs playing his show.
It is so good to see Letterman again. His personality is great and he is still interesting. He is just naturally engaging in telling his stories and talking. He looks good.
The Late Show always had the best up & coming bands/singers; the biggest musicians and absolute legends playing or sitting in with Paul & the band-just like SNL.
I caught a few of them too (snow days or sick days - don't remember). I thought they were mind blowing - definitely better than the game shows he replaced. Would love to see them again.

This is probably a weird comment, but I think the fact that both of these men are seasoned interviewers made this a actual conversation that was easily followed and cohesive. Yes there were hilarious interjections, but each person was allowed to express a full thought and no story was left hanging or unfinished. Such a pleasure!

I have loved Dave since his first late-night show on NBC until the last one on CBS. I used to watch SNL mostly for the news segments with Seth. To have two of my favorite late-night people sharing the same stage makes my heart happy. Their comedic timing and comments are top-notch!!! I'm pretty sure I might have awakened my downstairs neighbor with my laughter as I watched this segment...lol!! Thank you for having Dave on, and for acknowledging the beginning of "Late Night" so many years ago, and for continuing to bring the fun and intelligence every night. Love you both!!! 🧡🧡
I remember as an 11 year-old being in the hospital in 1983. It was the first time I could stay up late and I discovered David Letterman. His wacky humor and gags really made me laugh. Watching him after Carson was something that I looked forward to after that.

David Letterman was brightness for me in an often dark childhood. I knew that each night I could look forward to a visit with my pal Dave. Seth Meyers has been that and so much more these past few years (and since his SNL days for me). It’s so nice to see them both together and the respect they show for each other is wonderful. These two are the best in the business and I am so fortunate to have been able to see them do their shows live!

Letterman's daytime show on NBC was hilarious! They did "The World's Only Daytime Fireworks" on the 4th of July. They showed the NYC skyline - live - and had the sounds of fireworks and asked the audience to oooh and aaah. It was so funny.
Seth is such a great man because he always gives credit to his writers/performers when they come up with brilliant and hilarious ideas. A lesser man would attempt to accept all credit and praise for himself.
SO GOOD to see Dave!! Watched him almost every night until his retirement. Dave was sharp as a razor blade, too, with fantastic timing and split-second responses. He could, if he wanted, start back this evening like nothing ever happened and resume the show. All props to Seth for inviting Dave, for dressing up for the occasion, and for all the compliments and respect he happily gave to Dave. Absolutely wonderful for them both, and for us getting to see this. Thanks to all involved!

People don't remember just how great Dave was when it was just him, without the demands and constraints of a long running show. Watching his earlier standup, or guest spots on all the regular shows of the day, is a huge dive into his natural talent and timing. This is just a refresher course in what we have known for a long time. He's still got it! I think Seth's "Late Night" is the most worthy incarnation of the show since the early days. His intelligence, and ability to change and evolve with the audience in mind, truly is a tribute to the genera. I hope he gets to do it as long as he wants, just like Dave did. Amazing anniversary show!
It was hilarious, my mom & I never missed it. The one that stands out, & I believe it was the nail in the coffin for the show, was an older couple’s anniversary celebration - the confetti, that rained down upon the couple, was catching on fire. I just wish his late night gig would have been live.

A while ago i watched a failed 70s or 80s super low budget live show from i think the UK on TH-cam, i forget the name of the show, annoyingly, i was trying to search for it right now, but maybe it'll come back to me later. But there was one episode that was especially disastrous, it was probably done in the morning, as there was also supposed to be an audience of school children in the studio. The kids didn't show up, because they got stuck in a storm. The lead guy was playing some kind of clown, but he was like the typical middle aged chainsmoking hustler trying to pay off his massive debt. No budget whatsoever, just a dark room with a couple of decor/stage cutouts, and after the first 5 minutes, it already felt like he was winging it. They were aware of the storm, so he was kinda trying to address the show to the other kids at that school, watching it. It wasn't going well, but they kept going because of "the kids at school watching." But then the lead guy got the information that the kids at school were sent home during the storm, so, nobody was watching it. But you could just see how broken he was, i'm not sure if he actually said it, or gestured it, but you knew he was thinking: "what the hell are we doing it for?!", and would give up right there, but they kept going. I can't remember how it ended, but i just loved that moment of complete defeat, poor people haha EDIT: I found it, it was Flippo the Clown, from probably early 90s, Columbus Ohio. And i couldn't find the moment that i thought i remembered where there were no viewers at all. There was defeat though, but i might have misremembered or mixed up shows, but it is worth checking out for some 'schadenfreude'.
Seeing those older shows now, I would have liked to grow up with Jay Leno and Ferguson, they are much funnier, except Ferguson seemed too much a pervert, kind of harassing the women that appeared on his show. I currently Love Seth and Stephen.
love Seth Myers, been long time fan, blended well, kindly jousted with David. Intelligent, crisp, curiously laid out the show for Dave to be “DAVE”. Seth just keeps getting better. Can we please please please get the full uncut interview? I assume there had to be some cuts here and there for time constraints, and Dave definitely deserves the full uncut version :)
My impression of these is there's usually very little cut. Both segments are uploaded or you can listen to the podcast for them together. The edits are usually superfluous stuff like dead air, gaffs, and etc. But there's a timer in-front of them so they know when to wrap.
I still recall the very first Jon Stewart show, and the very last. Dave showed up, and it was everything. I recall “Angst on a Shoestring,” with Bette Midler, 1985. For some reason, I always remember it as Catherine O’Hara. Hahahhahahaa…. I am dim, they are BRILLIANT!
Late Night with Dave was an incredible show!! I loved it because it wasn’t polished like Carson’s. I felt it was produced for the working class. I also thought it was much more funnier than anything else! The NBC show was the very best!!
They were both perverts, but Dave more. Regardless, Carson's yes, was polished, but many people prefer it that way and find it more interesting and, that is why Carson was funnier and this is not an opinion. Polished equals preparation, smart, intellect, wisdom, things you indirectly removed from Dave and that is why Johnny was funnier.
This is the man who paved the way for cutting edge late night television. I was 18 when Dave started the little dog and pony show...it changed the way we looked at life.
Oh Seth. You look so good in a suit (and I understand it's for Mr. Letterman) however it's still a shock to the system. I hope we get our casual Seth back.
I *LOVED* David's early morning show! Unfortunately, I worked the dinner shift in a bar at the time. I'd wake up, turn on the TV, and lie down (big mistake!) to watch. Then I'd be in and out of sleep for the next 90 minutes. I was SO, SO bummed he was canceled! Where else was I going to find such off the wall, wacky, silly, *smart* humor that spoke to me like his? There are family members I still share one of his funniest early morning reoccurring jokes with: "The band's really cooking today!" Pan to Paul Shaffer on the grill. Usually, repeated when someone's grilling. It still brings back that feeling of something new is happening here that was for us "young folks." I will always love Letterman.
Dave looks so relaxed and ready to have fun. No more stress and worries about ratings, bad guests or poor comedy skits. Here's just a man enjoying what he does best: talk in front of people and have a good time.
I remember Dave's daytime show soooo well. My best friend lived right next to the school, and we would skip study hall together to go watch it- this was in 9th grade. The teacher didn't even know we were enrolled until after the show was cancelled and we started showing up! : D
One of my all-time favorite jokes was a promo for Letterman's daytime show: "Tune in tomorrow. We'll be making three-bean salad using white beans and Magic Markers."
I loved that morning show. I talk about it all the time. People give me blank looks. It was everything to me growing up in rural extreme eastern Tennessee a rebel without claws.
I first started watching Dave’s late night in 1983. My infant son was colicky and cry half the night, so, we’d stay up and watch together. Only watch, I couldn’t hear his show for 4 months until my son got over the colic. I remember the guy who tied weather balloons to his lawn chair and was flying around, Dave interviewed him. Couldn’t hear the questions, but it looked like fun
David Letterman's Morning Show was my favorite thing in 1980. Many of the features of the Late Show began on his daytime show. The writers were absolutely incredible. I was 30, and it resonated with me, and I never missed it. I was angry when it was canceled and replaced with the same daytime drivel that it was a refreshing change from. David has consistently delivered excellent entertainment for his entire adult life. His introduction of Willard Scott and the character of Larry "Bud" Melman were brilliant. Now, the best thing on Late Night is Seth (although I still love Stephen Colbert) and his great writers and presenters. He rejoices in his writing staff that features some of the most talented women in comedy. His obvious irrepressible good humor is both charming and endearing, he is an amazing host.
I still remember Dave's Mom at the Olympics❤❤. I'd love to know how he came up with Stupid Pet Tricks. Loved that! And lets not forget his Velcro experiment. And on and on. David gave us hundreds of memorable moments.!

Late Night with David Letterman during its run was nothing short of revolutionary. Nothing on TV was like it. It was sardonic, irreverent and borderline anarchic. I first watched it in 1987, late to the game, when I was 8 years old. Addiction is what occurred. I ended up watching Dave nightly or when I could not I taped it and later DVR’d it, for the next 28 years. On his retirement day I left work on some excuse, took the subway down to the Ed Sullivan Theater, saw the guests coming in and just stood around for the next three hours soaking up that the era of the GOAT was over.
I was watching Letterman's morning show for the first time because I lived in Chicago, I was from Cleveland, and Don King was on. Letterman asked, "So tell me Don, what's the deal with the hair" or something like that and I've been a fan every since.

It's great to see David Letterman again! I used to watch him on real TV in the late 80's and early 90's. Just after Johnny Carson and before the late movie. He had a reputation as a rebel who liked to subvert the idea of what a "show" could be.
I grew up with David Letterman in my life and it made me a better kid and now a better man. When I was very little he was our local weatherman, then I occasionally watched his short lived morning show. I just wish I would have went to a recording of the show. Dave is an American treasure.
That was awesome. Great to see Letterman reflecting, and how often he consider the human aspect of things. Like "they didn't medal", instead of "they lost". They at the Olympic, they all won.
Love David Letterman. I still watch his stupid pet tricks on his old shows. He's great with people, and animals. He's a show biz legend, and naturally funny!
I saw David’s first appearance on Carson and loved him. I watched his every appearance on the show after that, and was certain he would be Johnny’s successor. I was even happier that David got his own show, and watched it every morning after my college classes. I knew it would come back and be the massive, unusual hit it was at night.

The only thing that misfired was that Dave's anecdote about his son seemed to have been cut short for a commercial break. Otherwise, I agree!
Watch Letterman's show on Netflix where he Interviews Howard Stern. They seem to volley between who's interviewing who and it's really good.

The vibe of the show under Letterman overshadowed how funny and quick-witted he is. One of the best at ad lib remarks.

They were aware of the storm, so he was kinda trying to address the show to the other kids at that school, watching it.
It wasn't going well, but they kept going because of "the kids at school watching."
But then the lead guy got the information that the kids at school were sent home during the storm, so, nobody was watching it.
But you could just see how broken he was, i'm not sure if he actually said it, or gestured it, but you knew he was thinking: "what the hell are we doing it for?!", and would give up right there, but they kept going.
I can't remember how it ended, but i just loved that moment of complete defeat, poor people haha
EDIT: I found it, it was Flippo the Clown, from probably early 90s, Columbus Ohio.
And i couldn't find the moment that i thought i remembered where there were no viewers at all.
There was defeat though, but i might have misremembered or mixed up shows, but it is worth checking out for some 'schadenfreude'.
Its perfect that Dave credited Howard with the idea of bringing his own mother on his show! Seth you are so funny!
Blessed to have been a teenager when Conan, Jon Stewart, Dave and Craig Ferguson were all on and absolutely killing it.

Seeing those older shows now, I would have liked to grow up with Jay Leno and Ferguson, they are much funnier, except Ferguson seemed too much a pervert, kind of harassing the women that appeared on his show. I currently Love Seth and Stephen.
Craig Ferguson's show was incredible. Could you imagine what it would have been like if they gave him Corden's budget?

I just love David Letterman with all my heart. He’s helped me thru some tough times. Always looked forward to his show. I wish he’d do some more Netflix.. those were great.
Can we please please please get the full uncut interview? I assume there had to be some cuts here and there for time constraints, and Dave definitely deserves the full uncut version :)
My impression of these is there's usually very little cut. Both segments are uploaded or you can listen to the podcast for them together. The edits are usually superfluous stuff like dead air, gaffs, and etc. But there's a timer in-front of them so they know when to wrap.
I still recall the very first Jon Stewart show, and the very last. Dave showed up, and it was everything.
I recall “Angst on a Shoestring,” with Bette Midler, 1985. For some reason, I always remember it as Catherine O’Hara. Hahahhahahaa…. I am dim, they are BRILLIANT!
Late Night with Dave was an incredible show!! I loved it because it wasn’t polished like Carson’s. I felt it was produced for the working class. I also thought it was much more funnier than anything else! The NBC show was the very best!!
They were both perverts, but Dave more. Regardless, Carson's yes, was polished, but many people prefer it that way and find it more interesting and, that is why Carson was funnier and this is not an opinion. Polished equals preparation, smart, intellect, wisdom, things you indirectly removed from Dave and that is why Johnny was funnier.
Funny because I've heard it said they were targeting college boys and young men generally, feeling like they were being ignored in the market.
I was a kid but I remember loving Dave over the other late night hosts and staying up just to watch him. ❤
This is the man who paved the way for cutting edge late night television. I was 18 when Dave started the little dog and pony show...it changed the way we looked at life.
Oh Seth. You look so good in a suit (and I understand it's for Mr. Letterman) however it's still a shock to the system. I hope we get our casual Seth back.
I literally smiled throughout this entire segment. Television is not the same without this man.
I *LOVED* David's early morning show! Unfortunately, I worked the dinner shift in a bar at the time. I'd wake up, turn on the TV, and lie down (big mistake!) to watch. Then I'd be in and out of sleep for the next 90 minutes. I was SO, SO bummed he was canceled! Where else was I going to find such off the wall, wacky, silly, *smart* humor that spoke to me like his?
There are family members I still share one of his funniest early morning reoccurring jokes with: "The band's really cooking today!" Pan to Paul Shaffer on the grill. Usually, repeated when someone's grilling. It still brings back that feeling of something new is happening here that was for us "young folks."
I will always love Letterman.

My friends and I absolutely loved Letterman's daytime show. It was absolutely hilarious! Many episodes are/were available on TH-cam.
Dave looks so relaxed and ready to have fun. No more stress and worries about ratings, bad guests or poor comedy skits. Here's just a man enjoying what he does best: talk in front of people and have a good time.
I understand the suit now. I remember watching David Letterman for a long time school nights and Saturday nights right before SNL

I remember Dave's daytime show soooo well. My best friend lived right next to the school, and we would skip study hall together to go watch it- this was in 9th grade. The teacher didn't even know we were enrolled until after the show was cancelled and we started showing up! : D
One of my all-time favorite jokes was a promo for Letterman's daytime show: "Tune in tomorrow. We'll be making three-bean salad using white beans and Magic Markers."

I loved that morning show. I talk about it all the time. People give me blank looks. It was everything to me growing up in rural extreme eastern Tennessee a rebel without claws.
I know. I was disappointed that my mother & I were the only two who knew about it.
I first started watching Dave’s late night in 1983. My infant son was colicky and cry half the night, so, we’d stay up and watch together. Only watch, I couldn’t hear his show for 4 months until my son got over the colic. I remember the guy who tied weather balloons to his lawn chair and was flying around, Dave interviewed him. Couldn’t hear the questions, but it looked like fun
David Letterman's Morning Show was my favorite thing in 1980. Many of the features of the Late Show began on his daytime show. The writers were absolutely incredible. I was 30, and it resonated with me, and I never missed it. I was angry when it was canceled and replaced with the same daytime drivel that it was a refreshing change from. David has consistently delivered excellent entertainment for his entire adult life. His introduction of Willard Scott and the character of Larry "Bud" Melman were brilliant.
Now, the best thing on Late Night is Seth (although I still love Stephen Colbert) and his great writers and presenters. He rejoices in his writing staff that features some of the most talented women in comedy. His obvious irrepressible good humor is both charming and endearing, he is an amazing host.

Late Night with David Letterman during its run was nothing short of revolutionary. Nothing on TV was like it. It was sardonic, irreverent and borderline anarchic. I first watched it in 1987, late to the game, when I was 8 years old. Addiction is what occurred. I ended up watching Dave nightly or when I could not I taped it and later DVR’d it, for the next 28 years. On his retirement day I left work on some excuse, took the subway down to the Ed Sullivan Theater, saw the guests coming in and just stood around for the next three hours soaking up that the era of the GOAT was over.
This reminds me that having Dave working to entertain us five nights a week for so many years was such a gift.

I was watching Letterman's morning show for the first time because I lived in Chicago, I was from Cleveland, and Don King was on.
Letterman asked, "So tell me Don, what's the deal with the hair" or something like that and I've been a fan every since.

Friends and I watched the morning Letterman Show and sat on the phone talking about it as it was on. We thought ''this sh** is great!"
Blew off morning classes to watch morning show. It was live and the best TV I had ever seen.
Got my mom to drive me to school so I could watch the first part of Letterman's show. Then she would race home to watch the rest of it.

It's great to see David Letterman again! I used to watch him on real TV in the late 80's and early 90's. Just after Johnny Carson and before the late movie. He had a reputation as a rebel who liked to subvert the idea of what a "show" could be.
I grew up with David Letterman in my life and it made me a better kid and now a better man. When I was very little he was our local weatherman, then I occasionally watched his short lived morning show. I just wish I would have went to a recording of the show. Dave is an American treasure.

That was awesome. Great to see Letterman reflecting, and how often he consider the human aspect of things. Like "they didn't medal", instead of "they lost". They at the Olympic, they all won.

I saw David’s first appearance on Carson and loved him. I watched his every appearance on the show after that, and was certain he would be Johnny’s successor. I was even happier that David got his own show, and watched it every morning after my college classes. I knew it would come back and be the massive, unusual hit it was at night.
