It is definitely not safe to install applications from stores other than Google Playstore, and it is possible that every system application has a backdoor inserted into it.
Dont worry if you do not have one of those supported phones, at core its android you can strip any custom OS to its core by simply editing its .img file and removing those packages, takes a little time but saves money
Depends on your bank. However, to hide the fact that you have a custom ROM you must root your device and set up many things to spoof your device's properties and the fact that you have root. It's not easy and takes quite a bit of effort to both srt up and maintain. However if your banking app works even after installing Calyx, you can consider yourself lucky and just leave it at that
This OS is very convenient. It does everything that stock Android does, minus the constant tracking, ads and spyware. I am using it for two years now on an older Pixel and the support from the developers is very good, you get most updates only a couple weeks after the official Google ones. It is a shame it only runs on so few devices, but the Pixel phones are usually pretty good so its not much of a compromise.
Great video! But the two main problems with modified phone software is that only a few phones are supported, so cheap Chinese phones with fantastic hardware and garbage software are not supported. The other problem is that many applications like banking software, digital drivers license and so on often are blocked from used on "modified" software.
@@TheJensss of course it will not work if you are on rooted devices. But it still will work if you know how to hide root from those apps , nowdays there is 3 method , 2 of them root on kernel side , most of the apps didn't know there is root capabilities unless you told them or granted them the access. I'm on rooted devices , most of my banking apps and other working fines.
Graphene is definitely not a "heavy lift" in any way compared to Calyx. If anything, it's easier because you can use the Play Store which people are already familiar with, and it has better app compatibility overall. The fact that people still compare these two in 2024 is very weird to me.
Uhm... what's the point of a DeGoogled phone if you use the PlayStore? Further setting up all your profiles and every app is very time consuming. Obviously if you're hardcore into privacy then use GrapheneOS. David said that in the video.
@@graog123 haven't tried that so idk for sure. However as long as it doesn't use the play integrity api (which is only used by some banking apps afaik), it should work on Graphene.
Graphene seems to only be available for Pixel phones. Is that correct? If so, CalyxOS is available for other phones besides Google Pixel. Maybe that's where the draw lies?
The Samsung phones are locked down so it's incredibly difficult to change the OS. I think this should be illegal but the US Government likes to kiss the feet of Corporations.
I tried your graphene os but try and get a pixel phone that you can turn the OEM off. Had to send the pixil back. No dealer is really helpful and will state straight out that the pixel you want is a factory set phone. So while you presented a great way to install it did not matter given the difficulty in determining if the phone is or is not a factory set phone.
It's curious that the only choice of android smartphones for privacy-focused DeGoogled roms are smartphones manufactured by Google. Why are we so suspicious of Google's OS, but trust Google's hardware?😅
Exactly, how can they be even sure about this customOS does not have any trackers or other security issues. Linux mobiles seems to be a better option than these
Well, we are always told how secure iPhones are and how much Apple cares about our privacy, security, etc. But we all know Apple collects as much data as Google does. Its too bad we cant do this kind of thing with iPhones.
Yeah...I know. But I was hoping for the wizardry of David Bombal to pull a rabbit out of your hat. 😁 I run an S24 Ultra now (Im a traveler and love the cameras) But I also have a Pixel 8 Pro that Im going to put Calyx on and see how I like it.
This video/OS only works for pixel phones so if you don't have one you are SOL. Quite useless video that is niche. I also have a s24 ultra and there is nothing we can do.
I am heavily into privacy :P Already had a GrapheneOS phone for.. 2 years i think? Great OS! Can even do banking on it which is great! However, my bank app always complains cause "you don't have google playstore so this app won't work". Just press ok and it will still work. It's just a "scare tactic" to try and make you have google playstore.
I'm working on Lineage Os 21 on my Motorola Edge Plus 2023 but Im having issues with certain important apps working with Micro G soI am hunting for alternatives. Currently using Shelter to install all my apps in a Work profile and keep the Lineage apps separate.
I prefer calyx as I like microg. Graphene is more hardened and more secure but does have some glitches. The graphene devs have also been a little sketchy before. Both are good options but I find calyx better as they focus more on open source and their Os works on phones other than pixels
That's the big problem with changing your phone's operating system. In most cases it is available for a limited number of devices. In my case, I have been trying to find a Custom ROM for my LG Velvet 5G for several years, and I have already given up.😢
Agreed. I wish more phones were supported. Unfortunately privacy and cybersecurity come at a cost and often with lots of hassle. You're got to decide for yourself what you are going to do. Pixel phones are the best I've found for this type of thing.
Some people would agree with you. A lot of this stuff depends on your threat model and your privacy and cybersecurity requirements. Getting rid of all the Google tracking in stock Android is a big step forward. If you want hard core privacy, use Graphene with no social media apps or other apps can that affect your privacy. However, not everyone is ready for that level of hassle. So, this is better than a stock Android and a good start on the privacy journey. Horses for courses as they say in the UK. There is no one size fits all option - you need to decide for yourself.
Facebook, Adobe and my banking app launches countless tracking attempts daily. I don't even have Facebook!! But I cannot install any other ROM, so I use DuckDuckGo to try stop trackers. It has to be enabled manually. Adobe is another not on my phone, yet trying to track me down.
14:39 which launcher is that? does it allow making the drawer transparent with dark tint? the animated icon of the clock app is super nice touch - lawnchair launcher introduced that to me
Graphene seems to only be available for Pixel phones. I use a Moto phone because of their battery life so CalyxOS might be better. The main thing I want to do is get rid of the spy and bloatware. Samsung is famous for its bloatware.
Is it secure that when you access the 'Settings', you cannot turn any of the permissions options off including Location?. Literally when you access the settings it has access to everything you have done or are doing. Do 'Settings' communicate and send data online?. Id'e like to find out!
Based on your earlier video, I was about to buy a Pixel 8 Pro and install GrapheneOS. Do you recommend one OS over the other? Most interested in which is more secure.
Hi, As an android user I'll like a change but most of the cheap phones doesn't support the idea of rooting and os change. So we are stuck with what we have .If the community try to expand such project to cheap phones it will be helpful.
Unfortunately that has little to do with the AOSP fork developers who make things like CalyxOS or GrapheneOS. You can pretty much squarely blame Samsung's (and most other Android OEMs) for not providing proper support for alternate operating systems, or for outright crippling the devices if you attempt so.
I flashed pixel experience on my redmi note 7 couple years back and i remember I searched through internet if it is safe for me to flash an OS and use my banking apps and UPI. I saw several videos that says UPI won't work in a custom rom ed phone but i tried and i used that phone for another year UPI and banking apps works fine no issues founded. But it stills a doubt for me if it's safe. The phone still works fine and i love the change from MI UI to pixel experience it was wonderful.
The biggest issue for me taking this step is that I am worried that support will get necked in the future. And having to take into account different setups, such as backups or remote wiping my phone etc. And perhaps even a bigger thing... this is free... right? Isn't the idea that if it is free, you are the product? How reliable will this be for both functionality and security in the future?
It's open source AFAIK. When dealing with proprietary software from corporations that sell your data, you are indeed "the product". However, GrapheneOS, CalyxOS and other projects like this are maintained entirely by a community of volunteers, with all the source code public, free for anyone to look at, copy, modify etc. The only money the devs get comes from open-source software like this comes from donations, and sometimes from sponsors.
name a few other than just parroting what you heard in day care.......what a claim......ive tested a few degoogled roms and run them through PiHole and GrapheneOS and CalyxOS are not sitting with open ports waiting for ingress connection attempts.
8:55 uhh, all these are soo repetitive tasks. aria2 downloader makes things very very simple. aria2c can be downloaded and installed on windows with scoop like: "scoop install main/aria2" create a plain text file with all the links, put in newlines after each url these 2 lines, indented, containing "checksum=sha-256=", and "check-integrity". then run with "aria2c --input-file=". # lines are ignored. example of the file would be: # File number 1 my-url-one-goes-here checksum=sha-256=FILES1-DIGEST-HERE check-integrity # File number 2 my-url-two-goes-here checksum=sha-256=FILES2-DIGEST-HERE check-integrity

Dont worry if you do not have one of those supported phones, at core its android you can strip any custom OS to its core by simply editing its .img file and removing those packages, takes a little time but saves money
If you use this OS does this mean you cant use certain apps like banking apps?
you'll still be able to use your banking apps
@@syntbob thanks

Does all this even matter? Once u sign in apps and sign into social media, cant u be tracked thru them?
yes, super yes :D
yes, this is a lifestyle change to stay private. Facebook is insecure no matter where you use it.
Why for "degoogled" phone i need to buy google phone?
Great video! But the two main problems with modified phone software is that only a few phones are supported, so cheap Chinese phones with fantastic hardware and garbage software are not supported.
The other problem is that many applications like banking software, digital drivers license and so on often are blocked from used on "modified" software.
What ? Most of custom rom can use banking apps and other apps.

Graphene is definitely not a "heavy lift" in any way compared to Calyx. If anything, it's easier because you can use the Play Store which people are already familiar with, and it has better app compatibility overall. The fact that people still compare these two in 2024 is very weird to me.
So true! The GrapheneOS web installer is stupid-proof and Android Auto works on GrapheneOS.
Uhm... what's the point of a DeGoogled phone if you use the PlayStore?
Further setting up all your profiles and every app is very time consuming. Obviously if you're hardcore into privacy then use GrapheneOS. David said that in the video.
Which of the two *won't* support the install of Microsoft Authenticator app?
@@graog123 haven't tried that so idk for sure. However as long as it doesn't use the play integrity api (which is only used by some banking apps afaik), it should work on Graphene.
Graphene seems to only be available for Pixel phones. Is that correct? If so, CalyxOS is available for other phones besides Google Pixel. Maybe that's where the draw lies?

The Samsung phones are locked down so it's incredibly difficult to change the OS.

I love your videos David. I work in Cyber Security. Always good stuff. But I have a question....is there another video coming for iPhones?
Thank you! What specifically about iPhones?
Well, we are always told how secure iPhones are and how much Apple cares about our privacy, security, etc. But we all know Apple collects as much data as Google does. Its too bad we cant do this kind of thing with iPhones.
@@JonsCreditAndTravel Agreed. Your only choice is to move away from MacOS to Linux and iPhone to something like CalyxOS or GrapheneOS.

CalyxOS or GrapheneOS ?

Yes, it's locked down hell. You need basically only pixels and then few other.
@@davidbombalIronic. 🤪
Shouldn't using apps like Facebook, Instagram on a degoogled phone defeat the purpose of privacy?
@@davidbombal I get it but why not just get a brick phone instead?

the animated icon of the clock app is super nice touch - lawnchair launcher introduced that to me
GrapheneOS is fundamentally more secure, but I appreciate all efforts.
CalyxOS being easier than GrapheneOS makes no sense.
Yea, he didn’t bring up any points to why calyx is easier to download then graphene.
I think the easier portion would be the fact that Calyx is available on more than just Pixel phones.
Hi,
As an android user I'll like a change but most of the cheap phones doesn't support the idea of rooting and os change. So we are stuck with what we have .If the community try to expand such project to cheap phones it will be helpful.
These videos should just always start off with, "We only have stuff for Pixel users. We have nothing of interest for Samsung users".
So in other words, it's not likely gonna work on the phone that your average person is currently using...
Be careful of "privacy" products. Some are fed honeypots
name a few other than just parroting what you heard in day care.......what a claim......ive tested a few degoogled roms and run them through PiHole and GrapheneOS and CalyxOS are not sitting with open ports waiting for ingress connection attempts.
8:55 uhh, all these are soo repetitive tasks. aria2 downloader makes things very very simple. aria2c can be downloaded and installed on windows with scoop like: "scoop install main/aria2"
create a plain text file with all the links, put in newlines after each url these 2 lines, indented, containing "checksum=sha-256=", and "check-integrity". then run with "aria2c --input-file=". # lines are ignored.
example of the file would be:
# File number 1
my-url-one-goes-here
checksum=sha-256=FILES1-DIGEST-HERE
check-integrity
# File number 2
my-url-two-goes-here
checksum=sha-256=FILES2-DIGEST-HERE
