Sometimes it's about finding the right person to give a sentimental item to. I had a handmade cookbook that my 96 year old grandmother had given me in the early 1990s when I first got married - it was a collection of recipes from members of her church that had been copied and bound (cheaply, like you'd do yourself at Office Depot) The cookbook reminded me of our humble beginnings in that first apartment, and reminded me of a time when grandma still knew who we were (she's in a home now and does not recognize people anymore.) I couldn't just stick it in a goodwill box not knowing if they would incinerate it. Well, as it happened, my friend's daughter was getting married - right out of college like I did - she was already living with her husband, same as I did... so the apartment already had been established and she didn't need household gifts. She's a church-goer herself and loves cooking. I knew she would appreciate a handmade cookbook from a tiny church in Maine so I gave it to her (with a card and some money) as a wedding gift. I felt better getting rid of this item knowing it had found a good home!
I don’t think being a minimalist is a bad thing. But I have found myself regretting getting rid of certain things. I have purged clothing only to have my husband laid off. We were in a terrible financial situation and I could have used some of those basic items I felt I didn’t need. One shouldn’t live in clutter, but purging unnecessary is stupid.
@@30daysorless8that's what I was thinking. Maybe when he was working she was buying more things to replace those every week and updating or upgrading rather than purging? I agree though. If I have a drawer for pants and there's room in the drawer for more I don't try to get down to a tiny amount because nothing else is going in that drawer anyway and it's not hurting anybody.
"Where would I look for it" ... good question. That's when putting similar items in one spot helps. Those googly eyes would be in my sewing supplies with the lace and buttons.

For 2 yrs I have been moving these items into that closet, listing them by season etc and if I found I had been overzealous & there was something I ACTUALLY needed that accidentally got culled, I rotated it back in. Out of ~3K items so far there have been < half dozen things that got back into the closets = )
I love the last tip. For me, it's about greeting cards. Going through a box of photos the other day, I realized that I had been keeping greeting cards that have sentiments way too long. I realized that I felt like I owe it to the person who gave it to keep it, in case I want to look back on it later in life. And here I am, later in life, and I find that it is behind me and I just want to move on. So from now, I think it just makes sense to throw them out instead of storing them.

Yeah, I have a pair of those. Totally cute shoes. My foot is too wide for them. But I keep trying to wear them instead of Decluttering them. They’re practically new.
@@MinimalistHome well, I wore them tonight. They don’t have the support that I need. They’re so cute, but not what I need. I try to Declutter, one thing a day, and it looks like this will be part of the Declutter
I kept my father's radio station that he built A muzzle loader my great great grandfather used in the Civil War And 2 cook books my mom used Everything else went to good will or the dump It was very hard throwing stuff out till I realized I be dammed if I wanted my kids going through this when I croak
What about when you are in debt/low income and a naturally resourceful person, but life is too busy at the moment to repair or create the things that you really love. For eg there are things that are precious to me, like photos of my kids, and some really nice photo frames that I have kept or found in charity shops which I intend to put together “some time soon I hope” and I live in quite a small house, so space is of a premium. I also have a beautiful spinning wheel that was left to my daughter by much love friend who died. My daughter is very creative/craft type person and really needs that kind of thing for her mental health but doesn’t feel into it so much at this time. Want to pick it up over the winter months. I have loads more examples like this how do you choose, because they are a big yes, but not able to be used right now so anyway they are a big yes for the future… THANKYOU! Xx
I am deeply concerned by the number of people who apparently don't have a place in their home to store googly eyes. Seriously? Every home should have googly eye storage.
Dawn can make that decision easy because she's been doing this for a few years. For us that are new to decluttering, a "time will tell bin" is a great option.
my son just graduated and I still have his toddler costumes...anytime I think about getting rid of them I then talk myself out of it because " what if I have a grandson one day?" my son would love to have them!!but is this realistic?!how do I get past this thinking?
Thats the 'Saylor Rule'... one in, one out. Lol! If we find we have FAR to many of an item type, we can do "1 in, 2 out" in order to free up space and still enjoy a new item (this includes gifted items).
No need to get rid of a pot. plenty of things to struggle with. I think I will have an inventory list. It would be great to have a storage room lol. Kitchen items stay in the kitchen. the rest. is stress
❤❤ LOL at googly eyes👀:would it occur to you that you have this item" And the shoes! Guilty! On a different note, i noticed you have your Ninja Oven by your gas stove. My Ninja Oven is currently cluttering precious countertop real estate because the instructions said expressly to NOT put it next to you stovetop? So, it is not serving me, but it is more of a yes than a no. oh help! Have you ever had issues with having the Ninja oven next to your stove top? The instructions never even hint at what they may be? So why in the world is that even a thing? Also, yours looks very clean. Instructions also say not to line with alum foil (though individuals in reviews say they do if they tuck it on the rack very tightly), so how do you keep it so clean? If i could use the oven safely, not creating something impossible to wash, I would def have more time to declutter. Thanks for your video!
When you buy something you should get rid of something so you never have too many things. If I buy new boots I find a pair to donate or throw out if not in good condition.
I really wish some one understood what it's like to have no money to spend. Oops threw away Google eyes. Well needed them for school and now we don't have them and no can't borrow them or get them somehow easy. But feel like sheet for throwing them awsy.

If you don’t see one recipe you like, call it a loss and move on ☺️
I check out Cookbooks from the library, photocopy the recipes that work for me
Thanks
Great points!😊
Thanks Debbie!
Terrific video!
Thanks! 🌟
Yeah, I have a pair of those. Totally cute shoes. My foot is too wide for them. But I keep trying to wear them instead of Decluttering them. They’re practically new.
Might be time to let them go…
@@MinimalistHome 😢😢😢😢. OK, I’ll try to wear them a while. Maybe put them in quarantine. That will make it easier to let them go.
@@MinimalistHome well, I wore them tonight. They don’t have the support that I need. They’re so cute, but not what I need. I have tendinitis, and now my foot is hurting me
I’ve never worn them outside, so I’ll see if I can sell them for a few bucks. donate them if I can’t.
Thanks for the push. I try to Declutter, one thing a day, and it looks like this will be part of the Declutter
Great Show 💟
Thanks Munira!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.❤️
Thanks Debbie!
I LOVE THIS ONE!
Yay!
Great video
Thank you. 😊👍
Loved it ❤
Excelente!🌻
Thanks Laura!
I kept my father's radio station that he built
A muzzle loader my great great grandfather used in the Civil War
And 2 cook books my mom used
Everything else went to good will or the dump
It was very hard throwing stuff out till I realized I be dammed if I wanted my kids going through this when I croak
Wow!! Neat to have that muzzle loader! I love your strategy though
"would it ever occur to me that I already have this item" when I tell you my brain exploded.
Totally!
Can I have that coffee grinder? It seems like it's a waver on your part. 😊
Actually, I love it. It was my dad’s
Xx
Some of the things you described sound like great things to keep and repair, but I bet you can find some things that you can declutter
I am deeply concerned by the number of people who apparently don't have a place in their home to store googly eyes. Seriously? Every home should have googly eye storage.
Yes, i agree. Mine have their own little cubby 😳😂
I see that Bloody Mary @ 4:54 lol me too gurl
A caesar! (canadian ☺️)
Is that a Vancouver island map?
yep!
@@MinimalistHome cool! Born and raised 😎
Amazing
Thank you!
The very first thing Dawn said, I was like NOPE! That is WAY too simple for most things - obviously, just my opinion.
Thanks for your opinion and no worries. I hope there were some other bits in this one that were helpful to you.
Could you split the difference and just save one?
Why do I have that same grinder thing that you held up in this video?! Yeah... I don't know where to put mine either... lol!
haha!
You are SO gorgeous! You remind me of that amazing beauty, Vera Farmiga. P.S. And I love your couch pillows, too : D
Aww, thank you i! What a nice compliment!
What helps me too is putting same items in one place. Like notebooks not in 3 places in the house.
Great!
Keep a few for the grandkids. My husband has some cool stuff that was kept. My parents kept nothing cool. Lol
haha, good point!
Thats the 'Saylor Rule'... one in, one out. Lol! If we find we have FAR to many of an item type, we can do "1 in, 2 out" in order to free up space and still enjoy a new item (this includes gifted items).
Great idea!
4:53 are you decluttering your garage while drinking a Bloody Mary?! 😆
Haha, it was a caesar!
OMGOSH so funny and true! Thanks girls
No need to get rid of a pot. plenty of things to struggle with. I think I will have an inventory list. It would be great to have a storage room lol. Kitchen items stay in the kitchen. the rest. is stress
🤞🏼💪🏼🌟
That's why I have multiples 🤣 of scissors, tools, glasses, lip balms... Sooner or later I will not put it back "where it goes"....
02:30
That's where your jar of pennies should go
haha, good one!
@@MinimalistHome Where DID the pennies go?
🤣
Are u Todd Friel's daighter?? You sound just like him!
Nope! That’s fun to hear though! 👋🏼
Never get rid of a canner... Unless you don't can.
Thanks girls
I saw someone with a t-shirt that said "It's not hoarding if it's books!"
Oh, I hope that is true.
Depends on each person and how they manage their collection and how much room they have for their books! 👋🏼
We don’t use Pennie’s in Canada so get rid of them 😅
Right!
@@MinimalistHome I’m just kidding with you though I doughy they will have value in the future keep a few hehe
Ours is a breville and I'm not sure if there were instructions to not put by the stove, but it's worked out well so far
When you buy something you should get rid of something so you never have too many things. If I buy new boots I find a pair to donate or throw out if not in good condition.
Absolutely!
We , as in ALL of us need to quit buying sooo much stuff!
❤🤩👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊
I really wish some one understood what it's like to have no money to spend. Oops threw away Google eyes. Well needed them for school and now we don't have them and no can't borrow them or get them somehow easy. But feel like sheet for throwing them awsy.
Dump the jar of pennies under the couch cushions! There! It has a new spot!
@rebeccastephens6087 Ha-ha, I thought the same thing! Great minds... 😂
I can always locate my googly eyes
me too, haha!
Yup, me also 😂
