Floor tiles convert footsteps into electricity

  • There's no denying that we adore renewable energy sources, but some types of renewables are cooler than others. We are talking here about the process of producing electricity from footsteps.
Pavegen tiles are used to generate this sort of kinetic energy, and each step may generate up to 7W of off-grid electricity. In 36 locations throughout the world, this technology has already been implemented 200 times, making roadways more intelligent.
This is because the novel walkway is very efficient, using the energy that is generated through footsteps to power street lighting, displays, speakers, and alarms. It even stores the energy it produces during the day for use at night.
Where are these walkways installed? What data do they collect? How much energy do they produce in total? What is the science, engineering, and technology behind how they work? We answer all these questions and more and bring you footage of the tiles in action.

Almost as crazy as splitting a subatomic particle we can't see and being able to harness it's energy, Oh wait...

They only last 5 years? I'm also curious how they hold up against snow, rain, and human stupidity (someone is going to pee/vomit drop food on those things on a regular basis).

Humans have improved the wheel since the time it has been invented, just give this new technology a few years for R&D improvements. Meta-materials are changing the world, which will improve most everything.

Too much use of ressources for only few watts generated. Always think about the EROEI of those so called energy sources.

You need to tell us how much energy is harvested. You lose a lot of credibility when you only tell us power. 7 Watts from a step is power, i.e. the rate of generating energy. If we assume a step generates 7 W for 1/2 second, then that is 3.5 joules. If they last for 20 million steps, that's 70 million Joules, or about 20 kilowatt-hours, which is worth about $4. Each tile certainly costs more than that to make/install/maintain. I'm very doubtful that even in an off grid location this would be a cost-effective way to generate electric power, when compared to say solar+batteries.

      Hey Thomas,
What do you think this elektromagnetic generator shown in the video costs? And where you could buy something like that?

@@JD-jt5ru Pavegen. £1,250 per square meter according to Ealconsult's website but that seems to be old. TheSwitch website states that it's £80 per square foot and the article is from 2022. I hope this helps! :)
