I suspect that the leather would have afforded a degree of protection to the glass, in much the same way as a leather hat box would have protected a top hat. They both come from the Victorian days (I have shown a leather hat box renovation in one of my videos on TH-cam).
Why did they cover it in leather? Why didn't they just carry the bottle as it is?
