Joseph Dixon (Walsall) established their business in 1843 and closed 2015.
They are famous for their leatherwork tools, particularly for the saddlery trade. This is your last chance to buy NEW tools that they made and now being sold by Abbey England, Email; info@AbbeyEngland.com

As a working saddler for over 50 years I can wholeheartedly recommend these tools and the firm of Abbey England. Many of my tools are shown in this video.
PLEASE NOTE; if any of you viewers are new to working with leather and maybe unsure of what you need then I would suggest that you contact Abbey who will willingly offer you advice. I am not connected to them except that I have traded with them for over 50 years and always found them most helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.
This is part of an ongoing collection of videos depicting a traditional craft that is alive and still in demand. So if you are interested in rural craftmanship please checkout my other videos on TH-cam. A click on the Subscription button & the thumbs up sign would be much appreciated.

Leather Hip Flasks, traditional & modern-day by Robert H Steinke, Master Saddler & Harness Maker
มุมมอง 97หลายเดือนก่อน
A slightly unusual item as I don't think you will find many harness makers workbenches with hip flasks on them! Interesting all the same I think. The glass flask was exhibited in my Museum of the Master Saddler and is a great example of alternative work that a saddler would have done many years ago. This video is filmed in my saddlers & harness makers workshop and is part of an ongoing collecti...
Antique Bag & Timepieces for Road Coach Guard made by Gidden of London Presented by Robert H Steinke
มุมมอง 196หลายเดือนก่อน
In the days when the Royal Mail was transported in a Road Coach puled by a team of 4 horses the Guard would have a leather bag to hold timepieces and a key to unlock the post box on board. This bag was made by the famous Saddlers "Giddens of London". They were also famous for making trade harness with coloured inserts and I have regularly had these old sets in my Harness Makers Workshop for ren...

Others are modern day tools and most are only 50 years old! lol. I've been working at the bench for a long, long time now. Amazing work and skill
I notice your awl blade isn't central in your awl handle Rob 🤔.. Personal preference? Trade trick?
Never occurs to me, I hate new awl handles as the needles tend to slip off. So when a blade breaks, a most annoying thing, I would usually just make another hole in the handle and slip a new blade in, simple.
Working with your hands! Keep it up Rob...
Not certain why TH-cam recommended this but keep up the good work!
Thanks for your comment, it did give me a laugh first thing in the morning as I agree with the YT bit! I'm new to this TH-cam game, the saddlery I've done for over 50 years, and I'm still trying to see what fits in. Am filming another vid on martingales today so keep coming back. Rob
I love them🎉
Well thank you very much Dave, its always good to get positive feedback as this channel not 6 months old yet.
How do I contact you thanks
Hi, just clicked onto Friends on Facebook. My email is Rob-HarnessMaker @Outlook.com
Thank you, Rob for your kind comments! A very interesting and useful video for people to watch. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
And my thanks to all at Team Abbey for all your help over the years, Rob
Why did they cover it in leather? Why didn't they just carry the bottle as it is?
I suspect that the leather would have afforded a degree of protection to the glass, in much the same way as a leather hat box would have protected a top hat. They both come from the Victorian days (I have shown a leather hat box renovation in one of my videos on TH-cam).
Can you provide the link for the seller of that kislux bag? Thanks,I have no qualms about buying kislux .
Not sure what you mean by kislux as that is a Giddens bag in the video. It was bought with a team set harness.
This is really interesting, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your kind words and YES I will be putting more vids up, all shot in my workshop. Regards Rob
This is wonderful! Keep it up bro🙏🏾
Glad you liked it, hopefully many more to come. Take care, Rob
How much are you charging for the same set as them if you were to make me a set and would you make a collar instead of a breast plant if you could would that be a opinion you'd give
Thanks for your interest, the price will be £1400 with rolled leather traces plus other rolled parts. The 2 options are A/ Tilbury tugs and no breeching. B/ Closed tugs with breeching. Both same price. No collar and hames option. Am busy till Christmas then finish this set off early in the new year. Regards Rob
Top quality Craftsmanship. Thank you Robert....
AND thank you for viewing. I'll keep the vids coming, there is so many buzzing around my head trying to get out. Regards, Rob
Very cool! Liked
Well thank you, more vids to come. Rob
Thanks Rob
Thanks robert 👍
Well that was quick, many thanks Johnny. Rob
Definitely one of the family and thought a lot of 🤗 Stay strong 💪
YES Definitely!! so much so he used to wonder into my workshop which adjoined the stables and head straight for the sugar jar and give a winy.
It's always hard to say good-bye to a horse, no matter its size. I have done it many times in the 61 years I have had horses so far and I dread the day when it will happen again. Our equine partners and friends are family members!
Couldn't put it better as he loved being invited into the kitchen to meet our guests and have a sniffy around the table for titbits. Mini ponies have a reputation for being snappy and unruly, but not Rocky. Maybe because he was spoken to and handled nearly every day of his life!
Well put together Rob, makes you think 🤔.. 👍 The war horse would be another study all by itself too. They've played a big part in shaping history.
Absolutely agree with you. So watch this space for for a Military special!
Lovely craft manship
There used to be a saddle Makers in Central London, do you know if they are still in business?
Love craft work ❤
Thanks Shane, I've loved this craft since my first week in the job, that was a whiiiiile agoooo. Rob
Interesting to see how there made .dose be nice to see a harness with a pop of colour .
And, Shane, lots more colour to come! Rob
Thank you. I have all your books! Amazing. Do you have a video of how to make an Atherstone girth? Loving the videos!
Hi Jonny and many thanks for buying my books! I don't have a video on an Atherstone girth as I specialized in making Balding girths. You will find the Balding on page 236 of my Bridlework book. Take care and look after that book as I've seen them for sale second-hand for £1,400, no that's NOT a typo, lol. Regards Rob
@@RobSteinke-s5q thanks! One sold recently for £7400 ... in demand!! I have one copy of the bridle making.... special book! So thank you again!
@@JohnnyMorganatregalstag Thanks Johnny for that update. I'm not complaining just to say that book originally sold for £40 and I got the usual authors royalties of 10% my maths make that £4 BUT I did enjoy the launch of that book and several others at a reception in the grounds of Buckingham Palace!!
0:39 You have a true teachers temprament.. 👍 pleasure to watch! Rob, would you be able to do a tutorial on your technique for making and attaching the pads to a stallion harness? Best regards....
I have just taken an order for a set of Welsh Cob stallion tack, all stitched by hand, which I will be covering in full on another web site www.CarriageCommentator.com I will also be recording a Short video to promote this other site next week and will go up on my TH-cam channel. That's the advantage of clicking the Subscribe box, you get info as it happens. Thank you for your kind words and am sure we will chat again. Regards, Rob
Where can I buy the book😊
Hi there, as mentioned in vid its out of print but available second hand. I've just looked at www.ABEBOOKS.co.uk and they have several on their site ranging from £35 in UK to (wait for it)......£407 in the USA! Great price the UK book. Check them out. If you Subscribe to my channel you will get notice of my other books over the next few weeks. Thanks for viewing, Rob
Good to see old things been given more life.
Thanks, its great when you open a ladies side saddle up and find a signed and dated lable of the saddler who made it. I'll cover that sometime to show you all.
Must be like stepping back in time looking at other people's work.
@@shaneoconnor6079 Certainly does Shane. I have a board with a collection of saddle labels attached plus several items from when I had the museum. Thanks, you've given me an idea to film some of these 100 year old+ items. Keep a watch out. Rob
Lovely video
Thanks Shane & as discussed please feel free to share, Rob
Master Craftsman!
Thank you for your kind words. Your comment could have been "An Old Craftsman, been at it for years & years &..." lol. Regards Rob
Lots of potential here to share your craft. I hope you will walk us through your repair process on each item. Looking forward to your channel growing.
Hi David, many thanks for your interest in my new channel and, yes, I will be taking you through the process of not just the repair side but also some of my new work. As you can see I've only had this channel for 2 days so please do return as I've got several projects in the pipeline. And if you or anyone else would like more videos a click in the "Subscription" box would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Rob
Looking forward to it. Looked at your website as well. Have not read your books yet but will add them to my list.
