I attended college with a guy who was in this battle. He was hit by a round from an AK47. He lived, but he lost about a foot of his intestines, and had a large scar. He graduated and went to law school.
Blackburn spent almost a month in a hospital in Germany before being transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center, where he spent over two years recovering from his injuries. Todd was medically retired, and went on to work in his home towns Police Department, where we worked numerous divisions, including K9, Narcotics, Patrol, and as an SRO. He recently resigned from the Sheriff's Office of Santa Rosa County Florida, to focus on his personal life, and helping other veterans.

The two snipers that requested to be dropped in to guard the crash site basically knew they were asking to be put into a situation where there most likely no chance they would survive. The bravery they showed in almost certainly knowing they were going down there to die is amazing beyond belief. Their names were Randall Shugart and Gary Gordon. After their deaths, they were given the Medal of Honor for their selfless and heroic acts. They requested 3 times to be allowed to go guard the crash but they were refused the first 2 times due to the danger and then allowed to go in on the 3rd request. It's difficult for me to imagine the courage it must take to repeatedly ask to be put in a situation that you're most likely not coming back from.
1 year later in neighboring Rwanda 600,000 Tutsis were rounded up by Hutus and cut to death with machetes. The world asked the USA to intervene and we remembered what happened in Somalia 2 year earlier and politely declined to stop the genocide in Rwanda.
Grisham's books are usually legal dramas/thrillers. They've made movies of some of them. The Firm and The Pelican Brief come to mind. They're worth watching.

So... a few tidbits of the real operation: Todd Blackburn was actually about 23 and a seasoned Ranger who had deployed with Task Force Ranger; Lt. Beals, the officer who has the seizure, actually went home because of a family emergency. There were actually 8 Black Hawk helicopters and 11 Little Birds that flew into the city on the initial raid. The first two, Super 6-1 and 6-2, carried Delta Force snipers as security. Super 6-3 was the Command and Control helicopter, the one that Colonels Harrell and Matthews flew around the city in. Super 6-4 through 6-7 were the Ranger chalks (not Marines) and Super 6-8 was the Combat Search And Rescue helicopter. During the battle, Super 6-6 was so shot up that it limped back to the airfield and the crew jumped into the one remaining, undamaged helicopter and flew resupply missions, dropping water, medical supplies and ammunition to the Rangers all night long. There was a third sniper, Sergeant Major Brad Halling, flying with Gordon and Shugart on Super 6-2. He stayed behind because the crew chief/aerial gunner on the right side of the aircraft was shot and he took over manning the minigun, shooting at the Somalis around the Super 6-4 crash site, until it was hit by a rocket propelled grenade that mangled his leg, messed up the side of the aircraft, and knocked the copilot, Captain Jim Yacone, unconscious. All the crew of Super 6-4 had survived the crash, but only Mike Durant couldn't escape the aircraft due to his broken back and leg. Shugart and Gordon moved the other survivors to the tail of the helicopter and Durant to a tree. That move saved his life when the crash site was overrun. Durant revealed in his autobiography that it wasn't a rifle that hit him in the face - it was the severed arm of one of the dead men that he flew with. Four Air Force Combat Controllers went into the fight in three ways. One went in with Delta Force on the Little Bird helicopters, one was riding with Colonel McKnight in the convoy, and two went on the Black Hawks. One went in with a Ranger team and the last one was onboard the CSAR helicopter. A team of four Navy SEALs from the famed SEAL Team 6 drove in with the convoy in a Humvee with no roof, doors, or armor. All four men on that vehicle were wounded. The way that the pilots of Super 6-1 brought their helicopter down, tail first, then belly and nose, ensured that the four men in the back would survive even though the pilots were killed on impact. The two Delta snipers managed to fend off the enemy fighters until the Little Bird showed up. The pilot who ran to get Sergeant Busch, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Keith Jones, played himself and recreated his rescue in this film. The scene of Grimes and Sanderson talking about coffee and where Grimes was "found" was actually a conversation between Ranger Sergeant Stebbins (the man Grimes is based on) and Air Force Pararescueman Technical Sergeant Wilkinson, from the CSAR helicopter. Wilkinson was originally at the first crash site, but he ran to a position filled with Rangers and Delta Force Operators and he worked throughout the night to treat their injuries, going as far as running across a 45 meter wide street three times (once when he went the first time, and twice to get medical supplies). The hand that Othic found is actually out of place for that scene. The hand belonged to the Ranger who was impaled by the RPG later in the fight. The Ranger who removed the metal armor panel from his vest, Joyce, was actually shot under his body armor, not in the back. McKnight stayed behind at the base when they went back, and when the Rangers went back out at night, Major Nixon replaced him as the Officer in Charge. The exchange between Thomas and Struecker at the base actually did happen, and Thomas really did have asthma. He did get on a vehicle and went back into the city. It took three hours for all the necessary forces to assemble at the shipping port that night, and there were tanks from the Pakistani Army that weren't shown in the film. They couldn't get through the narrow streets and were forced to shoot down alleyways from the main road outside the city. Matt Eversmann wasn't at the crash site as depicted. He was actually on a Humvee when it was assumed that the mission was over. He did go back into the city with many of the men who weren't wounded. Cooks and other Rangers who were left behind at the base filled up the vehicles that went back into the city. The three Somali men portrayed in the film survived the real battle. Mo'Alim wasn't killed by Rangers as portrayed here.
I remember when this all happened, and the loss in that action was unbelievable. When the movie first came out, I realized that the news during the battle couldn't even come close to explaining the horrific conditions those guys went through. I highly recommend reading the book by Mark Bowden about BHD and Operation Gothic Serpent. It was much bigger of an operation than just this one mission and it illustrates how the situation there deteriorated quickly once the US Marines pulled out and the Rangers/Delta came in. One was a peacekeeping operation that the Somalians were grateful for, the other they saw as a declaration of war and were ready to fight against the US for. That conflict between the Somali's demanding their own autonomy and the US desire to "nation build" that was thwarted by Adid and the various warlords. It was a bad situation, all around.
Something important.....I know a lot of these war movies/shows are sad, but its important we watch/educate ourselves about these events consistently... or else they become forgotten and history will repeat itself until the lessons are finally learned.

I never knew Obi Wan loved his coffee so much😂. Seriously though this is an all time great movie, Ridley Scott did an excellent job, especially with so many young actors. For many of those guys this was one of their biggest roles at the time.
I watched an interview recently with Hoot (Norm Hooten) and it was interesting to hear his point of view of the entire operation (leading up to, during, and after). I found it interesting too that the TC3 (TCCC) was something the army (military) felt was needed and added it to the basic training for all soldiers. I had assumed that caring for wounded soldiers during combat was something that had been part of every soldiers' training for a long time (at least since Vietnam) but in the interview, Hoot said it all stemmed from Mogadishu. So the Post 9/11 soldiers were the first to get that type of training added in.
yes we were taught first aid but TC3 is alot more advanced than just basic first aid. sort of a comparison would be between basic first aid/CPR and the medical first responder. originally the thinking was basic first aid because you had medics in your field groups to cover the injured but this showed how quickly the few medics on the scene could not keep up.

I watched a podcast recently with a delta operator from this mission he said something I never knew about. About 3 days after the battle men came to the gate of their base with trash bags in it were the torn apart body parts of the crew of Super 6-4 and snipers Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon.
"I remember watching this movie in theaters when it came out right after having finished reading the original news articles the book, and then the movie, were based on. Full disclaimer, I served in the US Army 4 years but was never deployed to combat. The news articles had a profound effect on me. They are much more graphic than either the book or movie, going into brutal detail about the dire reality of the incident. When I started reading them, I got drawn in and couldn't stop - I binged them all in a couple of days. The second day, after finishing the articles, I was taking a shower and suddenly broke down crying for a minute. It affected me that much. The horror of what transpired and the raw directness with which those events are portrayed in the original reporting are a powerful combination. For a day or two, I felt like I had PTSD just reading a third-hand account of that combat. There are a number of things the film glosses over entirely. For instance, numerous witnesses from the battle reported the robotic efficiency of the Delta and Navy SEAL combatants. At one point, someone described how a Delta or SEAL fired a crew-mounted grenade launcher through a combatant to kill that combatant and hit another target behind him. Another incident that affected me was when an angry crowd, full of women and children in addition to armed combatants, was approaching a BP manned by a sole Ranger. There was so much fire coming his way that the thermal effect of all of the bullets created a wall of haze, like a mirage effect, in front of him. Suddenly an MH-6 Little Bird, a small helicopter armed with miniguns favored by Delta crews swooped in and swept laterally while opening up with the miniguns, and several rows of people at the front of this angry mob were vaporized into a fine pink mist. The Ranger who saw this just froze in horror for a full minute after he saw this. Rangers are professional, elite soldiers, and these people were coming to kill him - but nothing prepares you for the horror of seeing dozens of people, most unarmed, including children, vaporized in front of you in a split second. The movie mostly ignores the perspective of the local Somalis. They were angry because no one had communicated to them what was going on. Due to the way the op was staged, they thought their neighborhood was being invaded and were trying to defend it. This is portrayed in the original reporting, but the movie reduces the narrative down to the American forces only. It also takes dramatic license to amp up the theatrical threat of the Somalis. For example, someone else mentioned the attack from the Somalis in technicals. Not only is this completely fictional, but the actors playing the Somalis were beefy, gym-rat-looking guys. I remember scoffing at this in the theater, as the articles described how the Somali combatants had been nicknamed skinnies by the US forces because they tended to be under-nourished child soldiers. There is a description by one of the skinnies in one of the first articles about the moment the Ranger insertion team rappelled in from helicopters to capture the target of the op. To the skinnies, it was like gods of war were descending from the sky - jacked up US soldiers decked out in the latest military gear and weaponry. They might as well have been Men from Mars to the impoverished Somali residents. But the movie does nothing to show the fear of the Somalis and chooses instead to portray them only as a mindless, angry mob. I also took exception to the way the grittiness of the combat was glossed over with swelling music and the standard BS narrative trope of glory and honor. If you've spoken to anyone who has been in combat, or read accounts of people in combat, you know there is no glory or honor in combat. You are simply trying to survive and help your buddies survive. It seems like the book whitewashed the original reporting a little to reach a wider audience; then the movie added another round of that, plus dramatic fictionalization. If you want a true account, read the original series of news articles. I know that some combat veterans have stated that they thought it was a decent portrayal. With no disrespect to them, I thought the movie didn't even come close and frankly dishonored the memory of everyone who died in the battle, on both sides, combatants and civilians alike, glorified warfare in a disgusting and cynical way, and offered a racist depiction of the Somalis to boot. It is not something you will ever be able to forget once you read it. Rather than thinking how fortunate he was, he was actually disappointed. I remember shaking my head at that. A couple of years later the illegal war in Iraq, started under false pretenses by the Bush administration, began. When I got to SOI at Pendleton, one guy kept having intense headaches. When they finally got around to really checking him out they found out that it was brain and spinal cancer. They did treatments and surgery but it was too far gone. He was still a kid, got his EGA on his 18th birthday.
@jessecortez9449 that is effed up. They guy I'm referencing we were from the same area and became friends, after a 5k run at MCRD SD he whispered that wasn't that hard. Then he gasped 3 or 4 times and collapsed, I caught him and the DI told me to drop him and yell DI x3. They gave him the silver bullet and used him as example if we were faking to the company. Smh turns out he really had a problem.

My sociology teacher in high school was involved in this. Was/is a Green Beret. My mom has read that. She doesn't watch tv and basically just reads. She's a librarian and I pretty much grew up in the library.

Never put something in someone's mouth when they're having an seizure. It's impossible to choke on your own tongue. Instead put a pillow or something soft under their head to prevent them hitting a hard surface. Meanwhile call for professional help.
Great reaction to the movie girls. This is one war movie that's actually 90% true. Every thing you see on screen really did happen. Unlike lone survivor that also says based on true events. But what you see in the movie is only 50% true. While black hawk down is 90% true.
What i find amazing is they toned stuff down to make it more believable - when the real Mace went back afterward to try to find 6-4's crew he went in Chinos and a Polo shirt with no weapons. Super 6-2 and 6-8 were both hit and sort of crash laned in friendly territory near the port etc etc. I always find it funny that most of what Hoot does is Mace and a lot of Eversmann''s stuff is actually DiTommasso and Hoot. Hoot was definitely the Delta guy that said the Safety line though - Eversmann went back with Mace and Blackburn so everything he does after that point in the film was done by others. I get that they want a character to carry through the film and many of the people especially Delta didn't want their names used (Mace for instance) but it feels odd sometimes. The one ommission that is heinous though is not mentioning the Pakistani's and Malaysians who got injured or killed on that rescue convoy - that was the only real glaring omission that really annoys me.
You mentioned the helicopter maybe exploding when it crashed. It is surprising neither did. Not long before this mission a 10th Mountain Blackhawk was shot down and burned. Only the pilots got out and everyone in the back died. The pilots had a miraculous escape and the recovery at the chopped took hours, much longer than expected. The Somalis also attacked that force rather hard. Transportation was a real problem with the convoy. They went in with just enough vehicles to get everyone out, though stretcher cases would have taken up space. Then they were losing vehicles, the one truck at the hotel and the three humvees sent out early. Then they lost more and kmost of those left were barely running, so had they made the crash site they'd have been stuck. Later, only part of the big convoy went to the crash site. Some Rangers did have to run a distance but not a mile. It might have been more than a mile though if someone with the convoy hadn't realized that those men had been left behind. Even then they had to pile all over those vehicles and hang on until they reached the main convoy.
Excellent reaction. However, there were no Marines in this movie. The Marines left after securing the airport that the army used as a Base. The troops you guys see are special force Army Rangers and Delta Force operators.
After this , the British and French operation to free hostages ended up creating real and lasting peace .. it on TH-cam somewhere. Often forgot . It was-a 1000 to 1 shot gamble that paid off. The Somalis were trained to modify their RPGs to airburst as opposed to a hard contact fuse, making them more useful against helicopters. The main advisor to the Aidid militia who taught this technique was the leader of Al-Quaeda at the time, Osama bin Laden.
The general didn’t retire because he felt like it was a job well done when aidid was killed, he knew from the start that he was sending his men into a shit storm and was disenfranchised with the government over what they forced him to do.
Aidid was well studied in the art of war and knew that if they suddenly used a ton of rpg’s to cripple the air component of the US then they would have an ace in the hole.
The main F up was congress being in a rush in wanting to get key figures in custody and it’s possible that aidid baited with his own upper men, for a meeting, during the day.
Delta did do the stuff on their boots though - I am not sure if they wore dog tags in combat due to the whole denying they even exist thing they do. The Delta guys work on a very different set of rules to everyone else.

The exchange between Thomas and Struecker at the base actually did happen, and Thomas really did have asthma. He did get on a vehicle and went back into the city. It took three hours for all the necessary forces to assemble at the shipping port that night, and there were tanks from the Pakistani Army that weren't shown in the film. They couldn't get through the narrow streets and were forced to shoot down alleyways from the main road outside the city. Matt Eversmann wasn't at the crash site as depicted. He was actually on a Humvee when it was assumed that the mission was over. He did go back into the city with many of the men who weren't wounded.
Cooks and other Rangers who were left behind at the base filled up the vehicles that went back into the city.
The three Somali men portrayed in the film survived the real battle. Mo'Alim wasn't killed by Rangers as portrayed here.
I remember when this all happened, and the loss in that action was unbelievable. When the movie first came out, I realized that the news during the battle couldn't even come close to explaining the horrific conditions those guys went through. And there was much more, I'm sure, none of us ever knew about. Just as you talked about. God bless you, and thank you for your wonderful reactions. Great Movie
I highly recommend reading the book by Mark Bowden about BHD and Operation Gothic Serpent. It was much bigger of an operation than just this one mission and it illustrates how the situation there deteriorated quickly once the US Marines pulled out and the Rangers/Delta came in. One was a peacekeeping operation that the Somalians were grateful for, the other they saw as a declaration of war and were ready to fight against the US for. That conflict between the Somali's demanding their own autonomy and the US desire to "nation build" that was thwarted by Adid and the various warlords.

Something important.....I know a lot of these war movies/shows are sad, but its important we watch/educate ourselves about these events consistently... or else they become forgotten and history will repeat itself until the lessons are finally learned.

I watched an interview recently with Hoot (Norm Hooten) and it was interesting to hear his point of view of the entire operation (leading up to, during, and after). I found it interesting too that the TC3 (TCCC) was something the army (military) felt was needed and added it to the basic training for all soldiers. I had assumed that caring for wounded soldiers during combat was something that had been part of every soldiers' training for a long time (at least since Vietnam) but in the interview, Hoot said it all stemmed from Mogadishu. So the Post 9/11 soldiers were the first to get that type of training added in.
yes we were taught first aid but TC3 is alot more advanced than just basic first aid. sort of a comparison would be between basic first aid/CPR and the medical first responder. originally the thinking was basic first aid because you had medics in your field groups to cover the injured but this showed how quickly the few medics on the scene could not keep up.

I watched a podcast recently with a delta operator from this mission he said something I never knew about. About 3 days after the battle men came to the gate of their base with trash bags in it were the torn apart body parts of the crew of Super 6-4 and snipers Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon.

All of Super-^4's crew survived the crash - most were pretty badly hurt and they dont show them getting butchered in the film.

"I remember watching this movie in theaters when it came out right after having finished reading the original news articles the book, and then the movie, were based on. Full disclaimer, I served in the US Army 4 years but was never deployed to combat.
The news articles had a profound effect on me. They are much more graphic than either the book or movie, going into brutal detail about the dire reality of the incident. When I started reading them, I got drawn in and couldn't stop - I binged them all in a couple of days. The second day, after finishing the articles, I was taking a shower and suddenly broke down crying for a minute. It affected me that much. The horror of what transpired and the raw directness with which those events are portrayed in the original reporting are a powerful combination. For a day or two, I felt like I had PTSD just reading a third-hand account of that combat.
There are a number of things the film glosses over entirely. For instance, numerous witnesses from the battle reported the robotic efficiency of the Delta and Navy SEAL combatants. At one point, someone described how a Delta or SEAL fired a crew-mounted grenade launcher through a combatant to kill that combatant and hit another target behind him.
Another incident that affected me was when an angry crowd, full of women and children in addition to armed combatants, was approaching a BP manned by a sole Ranger. There was so much fire coming his way that the thermal effect of all of the bullets created a wall of haze, like a mirage effect, in front of him. Suddenly an MH-6 Little Bird, a small helicopter armed with miniguns favored by Delta crews swooped in and swept laterally while opening up with the miniguns, and several rows of people at the front of this angry mob were vaporized into a fine pink mist. The Ranger who saw this just froze in horror for a full minute after he saw this. Rangers are professional, elite soldiers, and these people were coming to kill him - but nothing prepares you for the horror of seeing dozens of people, most unarmed, including children, vaporized in front of you in a split second.
The movie mostly ignores the perspective of the local Somalis. They were angry because no one had communicated to them what was going on. Due to the way the op was staged, they thought their neighborhood was being invaded and were trying to defend it. This is portrayed in the original reporting, but the movie reduces the narrative down to the American forces only. It also takes dramatic license to amp up the theatrical threat of the Somalis. For example, someone else mentioned the attack from the Somalis in technicals. Not only is this completely fictional, but the actors playing the Somalis were beefy, gym-rat-looking guys. I remember scoffing at this in the theater, as the articles described how the Somali combatants had been nicknamed skinnies by the US forces because they tended to be under-nourished child soldiers. There is a description by one of the skinnies in one of the first articles about the moment the Ranger insertion team rappelled in from helicopters to capture the target of the op. To the skinnies, it was like gods of war were descending from the sky - jacked up US soldiers decked out in the latest military gear and weaponry. They might as well have been Men from Mars to the impoverished Somali residents. But the movie does nothing to show the fear of the Somalis and chooses instead to portray them only as a mindless, angry mob.
I also took exception to the way the grittiness of the combat was glossed over with swelling music and the standard BS narrative trope of glory and honor. If you've spoken to anyone who has been in combat, or read accounts of people in combat, you know there is no glory or honor in combat. You are simply trying to survive and help your buddies survive.
It seems like the book whitewashed the original reporting a little to reach a wider audience; then the movie added another round of that, plus dramatic fictionalization. If you want a true account, read the original series of news articles. I know that some combat veterans have stated that they thought it was a decent portrayal. With no disrespect to them, I thought the movie didn't even come close and frankly dishonored the memory of everyone who died in the battle, on both sides, combatants and civilians alike, glorified warfare in a disgusting and cynical way, and offered a racist depiction of the Somalis to boot.

As a warning, it is very graphic. It is not something you will ever be able to forget once you read it. I remember early in the second Iraq war making the mistake of watching an Al Qaeda beheading on TH-cam - back then it was a novelty, and unthinking, I clicked on it and watched it. That horrifying moving image is now seared into my brain forever. These articles are in the same category - read them at your own risk.
As a post script, at the end of the movie a teenage kid there with his grandparents was inspired and mentioned how previous generations had conflicts like WW II or Viet Nam to define them, but his generation didn't have anything like that. Rather than thinking how fortunate he was, he was actually disappointed. I remember shaking my head at that. A couple of years later the illegal war in Iraq, started under false pretenses by the Bush administration, began. I sometimes wonder about that kid - if he enlisted and was deployed; if he saw combat; if he survived… and whether the reality of combat disabused him of his naive notions of disappointment at not having experienced warfare firsthand."

When I got to SOI at Pendleton, one guy kept having intense headaches. When they finally got around to really checking him out they found out that it was brain and spinal cancer. They did treatments and surgery but it was too far gone. He was still a kid, got his EGA on his 18th birthday.

Great reaction to the movie girls. This is one war movie that's actually 90% true. Every thing you see on screen really did happen.
Unlike lone survivor that also says based on true events. But what you see in the movie is only 50% true. While black hawk down is 90% true.
What i find amazing is they toned stuff down to make it more believable - when the real Mace went back afterward to try to find 6-4's crew he went in Chinos and a Polo shirt with no weapons. Super 6-2 and 6-8 were both hit and sort of crash laned in friendly territory near the port etc etc.
I always find it funny that most of what Hoot does is Mace and a lot of Eversmann''s stuff is actually DiTommasso and Hoot. Hoot was definitely the Delta guy that said the Safety line though - Eversmann went back with Mace and Blackburn so everything he does after that point in the film was done by others. I get that they want a character to carry through the film and many of the people especially Delta didn't want their names used (Mace for instance) but it feels odd sometimes. The one ommission that is heinous though is not mentioning the Pakistani's and Malaysians who got injured or killed on that rescue convoy - that was the only real glaring omission that really annoys me.
You mentioned the helicopter maybe exploding when it crashed. It is surprising neither did. Not long before this mission a 10th Mountain Blackhawk was shot down and burned. Only the pilots got out and everyone in the back died. The pilots had a miraculous escape and the recovery at the chopped took hours, much longer than expected. The Somalis also attacked that force rather hard.
Transportation was a real problem with the convoy. They went in with just enough vehicles to get everyone out, though stretcher cases would have taken up space. Then they were losing vehicles, the one truck at the hotel and the three humvees sent out early. Then they lost more and kmost of those left were barely running, so had they made the crash site they'd have been stuck.
Later, only part of the big convoy went to the crash site. Some Rangers did have to run a distance but not a mile. It might have been more than a mile though if someone with the convoy hadn't realized that those men had been left behind. Even then they had to pile all over those vehicles and hang on until they reached the main convoy.
Excellent reaction. However, there were no Marines in this movie. The Marines left after securing the airport that the army used as a Base. The troops you guys see are special force Army Rangers and Delta Force operators.

Aidid was well studied in the art of war and knew that if they suddenly used a ton of rpg’s to cripple the air component of the US then they would have an ace in the hole.
The main F up was congress being in a rush in wanting to get key figures in custody and it’s possible that aidid baited with his own upper men, for a meeting, during the day.

Delta did do the stuff on their boots though - I am not sure if they wore dog tags in combat due to the whole denying they even exist thing they do. The Delta guys work on a very different set of rules to everyone else.
