The first and second train captures of the morning!
Here, Norfolk Southern 4279, a Juniata-built AC44C6M, leads extra NS intermodal stack train I62. Seconds later, a CSX local train with the Tropicana Juice cars shows up.
Both trains are northbound on the CSX Cincinnati Terminal Sub at Cincinnati, Ohio.

Wow, you got ANOTHER race.......how cool! You're making that look pretty common, lol 😆 Pretty decent sized train for that lone C6M. Oh, so i wanted to ask as I'm not familiar......NS and CSX both run trains on this line, but it's CSX's line 🤔 That's interesting 🤔 maybe it's just a train or two that has trackage rights 🤔 Is the train volume pretty good 🤔 I need some new places to go, so perhaps I'll make the trip south this summer 😁 Though that would be a long drive 😬 Anyways, great catch Hakeem! Thanks for sharing 👍
I think the dispatcher was having some fun this day 😁😆🤣 Yeah, NS Horsehead flexing big muscle! It was so cool to catch the CSX local since you never know where they are on the line, so I was at the right place at the right time.
Great question! So it works like this: CSX has a directional running program agreement with NS. Northbound trains for both railroads use the CSX Cincinnati Terminal Sub, and southbound trains use the NS New Castle District. Like you said, trackage rights. Some of this info is credited to Angela Cotey.
Train traffic is reasonable. Before PSR took over in late 2019, these rails seemed to be a lot more active. We lost a lotta specialty trains in the process, like there's no more CSX steel trains through here. We also lost the NS coal trains that used to come up here.
I will say that you definitely won't be disappointed! Cincinnati is a pretty great spot, but Hamilton is by far the best spot in all of Greater Cincinnati, in my opinion.
Oh yeah you got it, and thanks for watching!
@hakeemsd70m That's interesting, thanks for taking the time to explain. How many CSX trains vs NS trains would you say there are 🤔 I'm sure far more CSX since it's their line but you never know 🤔 Is the NS new castle district near you 🤔 Do you ever shoot footage from there and get the CSX run through's 🤔 My last question is this.......i know that you mentioned that you see NS 189 near you, which in return means that you probably see 172. I'm curious if you see any other of the NS trains that run up this way. The NS trains that is see (near me on the detroit district) are 120, 121, 172, 181, 189, 358, & 359. 358 and 359 go to Elkhart i believe, so you wouldn't see those nor the CPKC trackage rights trains that go to Chicago.
No problem, anytime. Good question. It really depends on the day, but I would say a majority of the traffic on the line is actually NS. CSX seems to run longer trains on average, and fewer of them. I once counted about 17 trains in 12 hours, and I would say at least 10 of them were NS. Yeah the New Castle is local and I got a couple CSX runs on there on my channel. Interesting...however, 172 doesn't come down this way. Out of all the NS trains you mentioned, 189 is the only one that comes through my area. It's counterpart 188 used to come through here, but now it terminates at Danville, KY. Yeah you're right, unfortunately no CPKC trackage here. Someday I'd like to venture up to Michigan to check out some of those CN lines.
