Epica are the other Symphonic metal monster on par with Nightwishbut slightly heavier. Simone Simons is one of the few in the same league as Floor Jansen and they are longtime friends. Also the main composer of Epica and the guy growling is Mark Jansen (no relation) was in After Forever with Floor Jansen. Unleashed live from Retrospect is a good place to conyinue digging.
Love Epica, another great song from there new album Omega is Epica - Abyss of time.
You should check Kingdom of heaven part I, II, and III. You will be blown away!!!

Epica are a Symphonic Metal band from the Netherlands (Dutch), they formed in 2002, The Skeleton Key is from their eighth album 'Omega' which came out a couple of weeks ago,

There's a Swedish band called Eleine (named for their lead singer, Madeleine) who like Epica tread the line between symphonic metal and melodic death metal: that blend of symphonic complexity and the mdm light and shade. "Enemies" or "Ava of Death" are excellent intros.
Or taking a sideways step, there is another Dutch band called Blackbriar who perform symphonic metal-y dark fairy tales. Zora has a different singing style, but an amazing voice also. Try "Arms of the Ocean" "Until Eternity" or "Fairy of the Bog" for evil lullabies

Like Nightwish, Epica also falls under the Metal Subgenre Symphonic Metal.
Also just recently discovered this song. My interpretation of the video is that the girl is trying to escape her world of nightmares by climbing the ladder but she fails. Does she make it in the end? I couldn't tell. And how is the skeleton key playing into this?
You need to check band called Therion. Generally they are creators of symphonic metal. There you have song to start:
