    As for Sony TCs: they physically mount, but there is no autofocus and aperture doesn't report correctly. You can manual focus only. A firmware update might change this, but it might not, too. I suspect we'll have to wait for Sigma TCs to arrive, and I don't know for sure if Sony will allow that.

    Dustin as always thanks for your great work and I am now more than comfortable in purchasing this lens. I am a dedicated landscape shooter and have been finding that the 70-200F4 is just too short for some of my needs. Landscapes and use of a tripod really seem to be the ideal use of this lens.

Also with the Sigma USB Dock UD-11. Says my camera shop in the NL anyway. If you use this lens with the Sony A7iii or A7R you can use the crop modus in camera to achieve 600 mill; no converter needed.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure - it helps you to get refined focus results with few misses when used correctly. If you are shooting only close up work, you can set the limited to exclude the further portion of the focus range. This makes sure the lens doesn't look for focus in that zone. Or, if you are working only at a distance, you can exclude any close focus points.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your question is a little too ambiguous for an accurate answer. The challenge with either lens on the a6100 is that it does have an older focus system. Neither lens will perform at its best on the a6100. The APS-C lens will be a better fit in terms of size.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not personally a big fan of 2x converter on many lenses. It introduces more optical compromises. I think the Sigma 100-400 will give sharper results.

  • @daryl9550
    @daryl9550 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for yet another great in depth review. I'm researching a 400+ mm lens and you are making it really hard with this review. In most other reviews the 400GM is sharper by a fair amount, but your copies prove otherwise. First world problems choosing between this, the tamron 150-500, sigma 150-600 and sony g 200-600. The 100-400 GM seems fantastic but can't really justify that price... Or can I...

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can handle the size, my favorite is the Sony 200-600

    • @daryl9550

      @@DustinAbbottTWI yes I absolutely agree, but I tend to go fot the 150-500 since I do a lot of landscape lately (got the 70-400G already) and I think I'd leave the 200-600 at home a lot because of it's size. Your reviews are fantastic so big thumbs up!

  • @pulper11
    @pulper11 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Dustin. This review was a bit ago but I’m watching it again. I just realized that the max aperture of this lens is the same as Sony 200-600 lens. You obviously lose 100 mm on the short end with the Sony but gain a whopping 200 on the long end. The 200-600 is also at least $500 less than the Sony 100-400 which is the typical comparison for obvious reasons to the sigma. You liked the 200-600 in a previous review. I’m curious which one you’d go for if shooting wildlife or even the running dogs that you get to shoot - the sigma 100-400 or the Sony 200-600? I’m thinking this decision may be actually more difficult for me to make. Btw I purchased the 70-180 and really love it (based on your review).

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two big reasons to consider the Sigma - price and size. If you aren't put off by those things, the Sony is the superior lens. Internally zooming, amazing AF, and great image quality.

    I have a A7Riii and mbiv for my Canon 70-300L, have been toying with the cost of upgrade to the Canon 100-400L ii to get reach but stay with average AF or move to the Sony 100-400GM but far far too expensive. Now this Sigma comes along at a price point where I could justify keeping my current 70-300L for MF usage and use the Sigma for fast AF, extra reach (which is what I was after) and not much of an IQ loss compared to either the equivalent Canon or Sony. Now am thinking that this is a purchase that I can justify. Great work Sigma, smart product design for people like me that have a limited budget for photography (hobby after all), but still love getting good results.

    Hoping this comes for the X mount too. I sold off my Canon mount DSLR version as I'm just not happy with adapted lenses and it was too finicky even on the XH2S. Not sure what Sigma is planning for the X mount among zoom lenses. If they bring back the hallowed 50-150 2.8 OS from 2011 that was killed off too soon, I'll certainly consider buying that and the 18-50. I have this sharp and beautiful 50-150 lens in Canon mount but being so rare, the team at Fringer frankly didn't have the resources to design an algorithm for the AF on that lens and it's basically a MF lens for me now on X mount while the AF had worked brilliantly on the 80D and 7Dii. Of course ideal would be a re-designed 18-35/50-100 1.8 set. Still haven't found anything as amazing as those for APSC.

    I wonder what this lens would be like with Astrophotography? I know 6.3 is kind of slow but with a star tracker that is not really a problem. What I would be interested in is the star quality, especially near the edges. If any of you have tried this I would love to know the performance. The Sony lens is a 5 year old design that was built before the modern mirrorless Sony camera's and I wonder if that makes a difference in quality of the optics (the Sony 100-400 exhibits star distortion near the edges).

      I didn't test that aspect of lens design.

    Can Sony 1.4 and 2.0 times tele-converter be used with this len?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They physically mount, but no autofocus and aperture doesn't report correctly. A firmware update *might* change this, but it might not, too. I suspect we'll have to wait for Sigma TCs to arrive, and I don't know for sure if Sony will allow that.

    • @Kaneda0015
      @Kaneda0015 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another TH-camr said that Sigma was not allow to make TCs for E mount because of Sony agreements with Sigma, that is why they have TCs for L Mount only. So you can use Sony TCs for this lense but manual mode only?

      Completely agree. I wouldn't be surprised for 2021 to be the year of third party RF support...particularly if the R5 and R6 are successes.

    Sigma has nailed cost effective designs favoring performance for just a little higher price than Tamron. I hope Sigma moves on a solid 24-200/F4-ish. THAT would rock!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true. Their offerings on Sony thus far have all been good value for money.

    • @jeroenvdw

      Sony GM focus distance is much shorter, so the Sony would be better for macro. 112cm for the Sigma and 98cm for the Sony.

  • @lawrencelam1820

    This is a new design of 100-400 for Sony-mount which is considered superior to the older version for Canon as far as optical performance is concerned.

    I start to save money to complete my relatively cheap holy trinity:
    Tamron 1728 2.8
    Sony 24105 G
    Sigma 100-400

    • @ZyaLuke
      @ZyaLuke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a bit of a gap lol. I have the Sigma 14-24 and the Sony 70-200G and I just got the 200-600G but I'm thinking about sending the 200-600 back because it's just so big and heavy and I might get the 100-400GM or the Sigma. I'll probably end up selling my 70-200 also. I hate these decisions! lol

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Yet. I do think we will see FE TCs from them, and the lens is clearly designed around being used with TCs (they introduced Leica TCs with the Leica version).

      There are some other options now at better price points (Tamron 50-400mm or 150-500mm, for example).
