    As for Sony TCs: they physically mount, but there is no autofocus and aperture doesn't report correctly. You can manual focus only. A firmware update might change this, but it might not, too. I suspect we'll have to wait for Sigma TCs to arrive, and I don't know for sure if Sony will allow that.

    • @stjepantomislav363
      @stjepantomislav363 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that feedback regarding Sony TCs. Since I'm mainly interested in stopped down landscapes with this lens, manual focus isn't a problem (a preference, actually). Did you by any chance check for the image quality across the frame with TC attached?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I didn't - I had a friend at Sony test the combination for me to see if it would work.

    There is another advantage for the Sigma which I don't think anyone else has mentioned so far: it is black, so it looks like all my other lenses and my wife would not notice. She would notice the white Sony and she knows how much it costs!

    This is also a fantastic landscape lens and for that price it's a must-by unless you want the GM for vanity and slightly faster AF and/or you're shooting fulltime in rough conditions. In the UK the GM retails for almost three times as much as the Sigma without discount. Mads also recommended the Sigma over the GM and he would know.

    Thank you for a great review! Your reviews are, IMHO, simply the best on TH-cam.
    They are much appreciated, and cover all the points one would want. I own the Sigma 100-400 contemporary in Canon mount, and use it adapted (MC11) to my Sony bodies, with really good results.
    The addition of a "native" tripod collar is a plus, specifically to allow for lens and camera rotation when using a gimbal. Well Done!

    Hi Dustin,
    Happy New Year 2024!
    I was just going through your reviews. In the review of the DSLR version of Sigma 100-400, you compared it with Canon EF 100-400 II and had a conclusion that Sigma had a better image quality overall.
    And now for the mirrorless version of Sigma 100-400, the comparison shows between Sigma 100-400 DGDN and Canon EF 100-400 II that Canon is the better one.
    So my question is, in terms of image quality, it looks like Old Sigma >Canon > New Sigma, is that right?
    Looking forward to your reply, thank you very much!

    With Sigma/Tamrons' increasing support of the Sony camera system it has to be tough for anyone but pro's to look at Canon/Nikon. Tamron is clearly the low price driver but Sigma has done an outstanding job targeting the infamous "90/50" goal of 90% the performance for 50% the price. The consumer is winning big now but it also pressures Sony to advance the A7iv to round out an unbeatable system.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's an interesting contradiction. Third party lenses put pressure on first party lens sales, but also drive system sales.

    What reviewers miss about the GMaster lens is that you can stop down to f22 with no noticeable diffraction. As a landscape shooter, that added sharp depth-of-field is the single most important feature to me.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob - what camera body are you using? You certainly can't stop down to F22 on the higher rez a7R bodies without any penalty from diffraction.

    • @bobpeticolas121
      @bobpeticolas121 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dustin. I'm still shooting the a7rii so 42 MP. When I was shopping for the lens, I first noticed the difference in comparing the Canon 100-400 with the GM in the DXOMark measurements. And what I found in use after purchasing the GM was that there was no NOTICEABLE diffraction at f22. I'm sure there is measurable diffraction with fine instruments, but my images still look ultra-sharp at f22 across the zoom range. It really makes focus stacking a long lens manageable. At f8 and a long focal length, you sometimes need far over 100 images to really focus stack a long shot.

    • @bobpeticolas121
      @bobpeticolas121 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But, yes, Dustin, physics dictates that there must be some diffraction at f22.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely true that DOF at long focal lengths is surprisingly shallow for landscape applications even at F8

    Nice review and lens. I noticed you said you never got 20fps with tracking on the A9 but 17-18, with 20fps capable lenses. If you want to reach 20fps, you need to use a fast shutter speed (try 1/2000 or faster) and priority in af should be set to "release", if it's set to "balanced" then you get around 18fps and if it's set to "focus" then it can drop to 0 even.

    Another wonderful review. Tamron seems to have diverged from Sigma in the way they are complementing Sony's range of lenses (i.e., 28-75 v 24-70) so I don't know if Tamron will compete directly with a 100-400 of their own. With your recommendation, I got the Tamron f mount version of this lens and love it. Right now, the lack of support of third party lenses for the Z system is a point against and will keep me from moving there for the foreseeable future. Sony really has taken their early start with mirrorless full frame and run with it. On a side point, I don't think you've ever looked better in one of your videos!

    Dustin, thanks for the informative review which has caused me to reassess my situation. I use an A6500 and my longest lens had been a Tamron 70-300 A-mount. When my interest in birding increased I found a gently used Tamron 150-600mm A-mount which also mated well with my LA-EA3. I can no longer complain that my lens is too short! The AF is not everything I had hoped for and the optics are not perfect, but the weight is the real downside. Good review Dustin, as always, thank you! Nice that you already got the lens weeks in advance! Wanted to buy one immediately.. but then i thougth, since you got the lens way before others do, how will that impact the review? If you are too critical companies will not give you stuff to review anymore (before announcement). So how objective is the review? Another question that came to mind in cases like these were a lens copy is selected and given to a reviewer, which copy do you think they gave you? A bad copy, a random copy or a very good copy? I think i know the answer. Do not want to give you critique, since your reviews are very thorough, but it came to mind and i think i need to take these factors into account.

      Fair questions, though I guess, as always, you need to trust in my integrity. If you don't trust my integrity as a reviewer, you probably shouldn't watch my reviews. I've always been very open with both my criticism and praise, and I've never yet had a company try to get me to change my remarks. As for "cherry-picking" a lens, my experience is actually that a very early lens or prototype is actually more likely to have issues than when production is stabilized later on. I've often reviewed multiple copies of a lens at different points or bought a different copy for myself later, and I've yet to find the performance of the second copy radically different.

      Hi Rob, so you do get a 150-600mm equivalent angle of view, but your 55-210 is multiplied by the same crop factor (all lenses focal length have to be magnified by the crop factor they are attached to). Here's what you'll find on Sony's website: 35mm equivalent focal length: 82.5-315mm. My subject is a statue. When I shoot continuous with OS on and all shutter speed below reciprocal rule. Only the first shot is in focus. I've tried several different shutter speeds. Happens with mechanical shutter and e-front curtain shutter. It does not happen with electronic shutter. Single shot photos are perfect. I believe there is an issue with shutter slap and the Optical stabilization in the lens. I called Sigma and was told it was my settings, but they couldn't tell me which ones. I have a Fuji XT2 and 55-200mm lens and it shoots mechanical shutter and continuous hi with OS and every picture is in focus. This is a little frustrating for me, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ted.

      Hi Sig, that's odd, but I think you're the second person to contact me about this issue. Unfortunately I can't diagnose the problem, as I don't recall seeing that issue myself on my cameras, and no longer have the lens.

    Hope to hear the news soon regarding the Sony TC compatibility with the sigma 100-400 FE

      At the moment, it's not great. The TC will physically fit, but autofocus doesn't happen and even aperture doesn't correctly report. It is possible that firmware update will improve things.

    I have a question for you since you're one of my favorite reviewers and you're very knowledgeable, and I'm having a hard time deciding on my next len(s) purchase...
    I'm a landscape photographer that's trying to produce the best quality work I can for prints. I love the idea of an all in one lens 28-200, but I also think the no IS might be an issue, but I'm normally on a tripod.
    Would you recommend getting the 28-200, or a 24-105 and 100-400 sigma to complement my 17-28 (love the sharpness of this lens)
    I hike a lot of miles.. So weight is somewhat of a concern..
    Also, is the 28-200 sharp enough to crop in to a 400 equivalent?
    Looking forward to hearing your input!

      I wouldn't recommend typically cropping that deep if sharpness is a major concern. If your application is smaller, however, that might work. I don't think the lack of OS is a major problem, however. You still get some assistance from the IBIS in your camera.

    Thank you Dustin for great review, I would like to buy a lens for kid sport which one is better for auto focus between sigma 135mm f1.8 art and sigma 100-400 on A9, I consider to buy 85mmf1.8 and 135mm (if auto focus can keep up for sport) or 85mm f1.8+100-400mm sigma.

      I would say the 100-400 DN because it is actually designed for Sony autofocus.

    Just sold my 100-400 for Canon. Used it with Sigma MC-11 on my Sony. It wasn't very good, but acceptable. Definitely going to look at this lens.

      This is definitely going to work a LOT better for you on Sony.

    Hi Dustin, I don't own a Sony but love reading about the Sigma 100 400 doing well and base on this video, I would definitely pocket the difference in $$$ and buy the Sigma. BTW i'm a casual birder/photographer and crop almost all photos anyway so edge sharpness not important. Thanks for sharing!

      Lenses like this are so valuable for giving options to those on a tighter budget.

    Hey Dustin,
    Any news on whether the Sony TCs work with this lens?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. They physically mount, but no autofocus and aperture doesn't report correctly. A firmware update *might* change this, but it might not, too. I suspect we'll have to wait for Sigma TCs to arrive, and I don't know for sure if Sony will allow that.
