    Watch the replay at 2:52 and you can clearly see it didn't hit his head. The announcers aren't wrong, sad to say that being a Yankee fan.

    • @seamus1956
      @seamus1956 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      2:52 is not a complete replay. Watch the full pitch slo-mo at 1:11 and you can see the ball graze the helmet, slightly change direction then hit the bat. That was the definitive look. Not sure when this was, but if video replay was available I'm surprised they didn't use it.

  • @gedalyahreback2133

    If that counts as a foul ball then the rule needs to be changed. A pitcher shouldn't be given credit for a strike and thus a batter penalized for a ball thrown behind the hitter - especially if deliberate.

    • @ryanaltfillisch7155
      @ryanaltfillisch7155 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I disagree that it needs to be changed. This kind of play happens maybe 5 times a year and is way too obscure of a play to be even looked at by the MLB. Plus, everyone is taught that when you duck or get out of the way of the ball, you bring the bat with you and he didn't do that quick enough.

    • @817hosko
      @817hosko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      for fucks sake. nobody is taught what to do when the ball is thrown BEHIND you.

    • @ryanaltfillisch7155
      @ryanaltfillisch7155 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +817hosko - most people are taught that actually. One of the first things I was taught when I first started playing little league is to always bring your bat with you (or even drop it) when getting out of the way of a pitch as it happens pretty often with kids that young pitching. I'm sure Machado was taught that as well. Suck it up, move on and don't let it happen again.

    • @817hosko
      @817hosko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      dude...I played baseball into my 30's. when a ball is coming behind you at 90+ mph you have no time what so ever. It's happened to me more than once.
      Edit: high and tight is one thing, behind you is completely different.

    • @ryanaltfillisch7155
      @ryanaltfillisch7155 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Please, I've never had an issue getting the bat out of the way on a pitch behind me. It's happened plenty of times to me as well. It sounds to me like you are just making excuses.

  • @Nick__E2
    @Nick__E2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That very clearly hit the helmet before the bat. You can see the change of trajectory after the helmet in the earlier replay after 1 minute. And then when they replay it in real time you can hear the ball make contact with two things, pop pop, the the second pop being a deader sound like wood

    Boston fan here (this does not make me an authority on the situation). If the ball hits the bat and ends up in foul territory, it's a foul ball. End of story. My response would be the same if it happened to a Boston player. At first glance, I thought it nicked Machado's helmet. Subsequent replays clearly showed it did not. The replay at 2:46 does not show any kind of contact to Machado's helmet. This was a very dangerous pitch, and I feel Barnes deserved to be thrown out. But just because a player gets thrown out does not mean the player who was almost hit get a free base. This also does not make the announcers (Jerry Remy and Dave O'Brien) asshats for stating what we all knew was true; retaliation was coming. In fact, he *never* advocated for a head shot. He said he explicitly had a problem with the location of the pitch, stating "knee for a knee". You can read into it all you want. If retribution is coming, and you're an announcer, can you not take issue with pitch location?

    they need to change that if the bat is not in motion it's shouldn't be a foul ball that makes no sense to give someone a strike on foul ball without an attempt to hit plus if your gonna throw at someone it shouldn't be a foul ball either

    Red Sox typically overreact to everything. Machado's slide does not look bad, but because Pedroia has a glass ankle, they have to throw a hundred pitches at Machado.

    Bad call, the ball hit him in the head first, then hit the bat. Regardless if the ball hit him or not the picture should be ejected. No reason to throw at the head. If your going to throw at a batter, throw at the legs. Not the head.

    I don’t condone this at all even as a Sox fan, but seriously guys. At 2:48 you can clearly see it does NOT hit the helmet. Straight foul ball, although I agree if you intentionally throw at someone and in this situation that it hits the bat, it should count at a HBP. But in today’s rules, that is a foul ball, no doubt about it.
